WWE : “Top 50 Villains In Wrestling History"

This list is a disappointment. I would say there are atleast 10-15 people that don’t even belong on the list. I don’t think we should count managers and what not. Only because heels should be from how they talk, what they say and the style of wrestling meaning if they fight dirty or not like JBL, Eddy, Edge. Don’t get me wrong Bobby Henan one of the top color commentators and managers. But his job was to get heat on him and the other person. And most of the time it was for laughs comedy. Same thing with Vicki just because people don’t want to hear you talk doesn’t mean you have heat or you’re a great heel just that your gimmick is annoying also like the Miz. There’s a difference between people that make you say "can’t wait to see or hear what you say or do"(ie Bobby Henan) and people that make you say "I can’t believe he just said that or did that"(ie JBL/Pipper) There is also a difference where people just don’t like it when you talk, no matter what your saying you they just want you to stop talking(ie Vicki and Miz) you don’t want them to talk but you have hear it cause you know it’s going to be an uproar(ie Piper, JBL)Also just because you make an epic heel turn doesn’t make you a great heel.

1.)Piper-no script no storyline, he didn’t even know what he was going to do
2.)JBL-People want to really kill him, would be #1 but it was part of the story
3.)Sgt Slaughter-same reason as JBL but I think JBL put a little more into it
4.)HHH-he might of not had people hate him by that countries or other nations as a whole (like the above 2)but those he did he would brutally beat their fav. wrestler to a pulp
5.)Vince-not only did he take heat but he was man enough to take the beating as well. From HHH to Austin he would could just get thrown around he also has the Kiss My Ass Club.

Piper is a great choice as No. 1. Fact is, Piper was huge in getting Hulk Hogan over during the onset of HulkaMania. Without a strong villain Hogan initially would have struggled, yes later on he could draw against weak competition like Bundy or Kamala, but his initial title win was a huge surprise. He needed a great opponent, someone believable in beating him and detested enough to make everyone cheer for him. Piper was phenomenal in this aspect. No one meant more to Hogan initially than Piper, just like Brett Hart to HBK, Dusty Rhodes to Ric Flair, Flair to both Sting & Luger, John Cena to Edge, etc. The fact that Piper was so huge in ushering in the greatest era prosperity wise that ever existed in pro wrestling makes him a great choice.

Ric Flair should definately be ahead of HHH, McMahon, HBK, etc. He was the quintessential cool heel, before such a thing existed. His interviews were hatrf and arrogance personified, though like Piper he could be funny (The "Manerquin Skit" in 1987 was priceless, his "She Was Mine before she was yours, she's damaged goods" promos were also great before WrestleMania VIII, honorable mention to the "Training Bra" promo in 86 and his catered ringside buffets "Its On Randy" skits on Nitro in 96). In the ring as a performer he had no equal for most of the 80s, a combination of charisma, performance ability, and cunning rulebreaking. Its what made his matches must see TV, he was so hard to beat and such a skillfull cheater it was hard to believe he could lose but he was so good at looking vulnerable at just the right moment you not only watched to see him lose because he was such an arrogant SOB you believed he just might because he made every look so good. Fact is both HBK & HHH have admitted they patterned their characters and in ring style on Flair's 80s personna. As HBK said he spent his time copying Flair and pretending it was original. Since his DX days ended HHH basically has been a carbon copy of Flair.

Both Piper & Flair were great at drawing heat. Flair needed extra security to escort him to the locker room after breaking Dusty's leg in 85 (Arn Anderson needed stitches after being pelted with bottles & trash during the incident), fans tried to rush the cage when he faced Jimmy Garvin in 87, he and Piper nearly got killed by angry fans in South America in 82, etc. Few villains inspired that kind of vitrol from live crowds as Flair (and Piper).

As for McMahon, he never was a wrestler so he lags behind. He would clinb in the ring and take a beating but since he wasnt a full time wrestler he isnt as good a foil for top heroes. I also wouldnt rank him far ahead of Bischoff since he was the one who created the "evil boss" persona and was great at it. Next to Hogan no one was more responsible for the popularity of the NWO angle than their power hungry, anti corporate, dictatorial leader who routinely used his authority as head of WCW to strip wrestlers of titles (Steiners), fire refs who wouldnt cheat for them (Randy Anderson, the promo where they fire him in front of his kids was great) as well as beat up children & wives (Flair's family, after "poisoning" him). McMahon was good but Im not sure he was much better than EZ E.

I don't think this list is too bad, definitely one of the best WWE.COM have ever come up with. I don't agree with some of it, but most are pretty accurate.

I have a few points though.

a.) Triple H definitely deserves such a high spot

b.) Mr McMahon's heel character is the best of all time- I think he should have been number 1.

c.) Eric Bischoff should be FAR higher- the man is so slimy, so dislikeable. A definite top 10 in my eyes, maybe even top 5.

d.) Mark Henry should be nowhere near the list.

e.) I am surprised JBL is so high up, but he is a fantastic heel, so I am ok with it.

f.) I would drop Chris Jericho down the list, I always preferred him a a face.

g.) Great to see Raven on there. He was brilliant as a heel against Dreamer in ECW. What a feud that was! Also, the stealing of Sandman's family and his mic work deserve recognition.

h.) I think I would have put Bret Hart on the list- simply for his anti-America run in the WWF. Noone had ever played the Heel in the US/ Face everywhere else role before.

i.) Batista at 50? Hmmm...maybe just. I'm sure there were better options though.

Maybe the top Villian of all time should be someone who was known as a Villian throughout his whole carrear. Just my Opinion.

This rules out HHH as we now see him as the smiley faced yet edgy COO who asked the Crowd at Raw 1000 "if they were having a good time" A great Villian wouldn't say this on the Mic.

Vince McMahon is the same. he has been hated and portrayed the Villian for years. However in the early years he was a Happy smiley faced Commentator. More recent he was the face Owner firing the Villian John Lauranitis.

Roddy Piper who they put at number 1... He is a face this day when he does his Pipers Pit segments. He was also a face around the 90s when he won The Intercontinental Championship from The Mountie (The Villian)

The only 2 Wrestlers i can think of who have played a Villian thier whole Carrear would be Jake The Snake Roberts or Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase. They may of had face periods but i for one can't remember them ever as faces. I will put Jake slightly over Dibiase, he was just more sick in my mind, i mean the guy carried a Sack to the ring with him with a ruddy SNAKE inside.

Again just my own Opinion on a Wrestling Villain, i see a Villain who has ALWAYS been known as a Heel/Villain. Understand others will see a Villian in a different way to me.

FYI Jake Roberts was a good guy, a dedicated family man defending his wife's honor, in his fued vs Rick Rude circa 1990 range.
