YEP YEP YEP WHAT IT DO
I think it's safe to say that John Cena and AJ Styles are the most over people in wrestling right now. AJ gets more pops than guys like Angle and Joe, and Cena manages to just barely scrape out more cheers than that wrestling savior, Hornswoggle. And Cena and Styles are the "leaders" of their respective armies in WWE and TNA. Now we have all seen the annoying endless threads about a John Cena heel turn in the WWE Sections, and we have all mocked those who say stupid shit like, "He's so shit now, make him heel or fire him!", right? Of course we have. But, have we ever thought to see if this is true?
Same with AJ Styles. Right now he's very over by TNA standards, and probably the most over in his company. With Ric Flair coming in, AJ will get more fan support, and probably rival Cena in cheer volume by the end of 2010. But, is there now a race to see who can turn heel first?
When Hogan turned, it was big. When Austin turned, it was big. So when AJ or Cena turns, it will definitely be big. But what company will do it first? Let's look at what will happen if WWE does it first.
WWE has most likely held back on a Cena heel turn because they're afraid of merchandise sells. They axed the idea of John Cena vs. Undertaker for WM26 because they were afraid of turning Cena heel. They don't want to end the relationship they have with Cena and the fans. But, have they ever thought about how great that would make the company? When Hogan turned with the nWo, there was always a sea of black nWo shirts in the crowd. Orton, Edge, and Jericho often get cheered because of their fan support, despite being heels. And we certainly can't forget The Rock, who constantly berated the fans as a heel, but still was considered a face all around. So if they turn Cena heel, give him freedom on the mic to say what he wants, and maybe a more expanded moveset, we could see the days similar to the Attitude Era where the crowd had a mind of its own and wasn't told who to cheer for. A Cena heel turn could give Raw and WWE a ratings boost, give the fans new feuds and storylines, end all doubt of Cena's ability in the ring and on the mic, and most importantly make Raw interesting again. Sounds good right? Let's look at what an AJ heel turn could do for TNA.
AJ Styles is one of the most over people in wrestling right now. You may not be able to hear it due to TNA's shitty production values and the fact that 30 % of their audience are fat soccer moms trying to get their kids to shut the fuck up - but he's over. The fact that TNA has to force people to wear wrestling shirts is a testament to how amazing it is that AJ manages to get cheers every week. With Ric Flair coming in as AJ's manager/mentor, AJ will continue to gain fan support, and by the end of the year become just as over as Cena. But, just as all Mentor/Mentee relationships end up, AJ must turn on Flair. What would be the ramifications for TNA? I see AJ getting better mic skills as a result because Styles wouldn't have to act like a bitch when he has to talk shit to an opponent. I could see Styles becoming a more interesting character because of it. And lastly, I could see TNA iMPACT getting a ratings boost because Styles doesn't have the personality of a douchey cunt, and a heel turn would shock the fans. TNA also has less to lose because they don't have very high merchandise sells anyway.
So obviously, a Styles or Cena heel turn could have great effects on both companies, but which would benefit more? And also, do you feel that there's a race of some sorts to turn Cena or Styles heel?
