MLB Trade Deadline Thread

So today is the deadline and the Yankees are yet to do anything. Every other playoff contender in the AL has made a move with the exception of the Yankees. I still havent decided if they should or shouldnt though.

They could definitely use another SP for if and when Garcia and Colon hit a wall. I'm happy they didnt really go after Jimenez because the Rockies were asking for too much. However, there really isnt much out there. The Red Sox/Athletics deal for Rich Harden has reportedly fell through, so he is still there, but what else.

The big names still out there are Heath Bell and BJ Upton. Upton is out of the question as there is no way the Rays will trade him in the division. As for Bell, I think its highly unlikely he winds up in pinstripes. Rafael Soriano is a closer turned set up man and he hasnt panned out too good so far. I dont think they give up a prospect or two to get another closer and turn him into another set up man.

With that said, Soriano, Chavez, and Hughes just came off of the DL and A-Rod should be back in a week or two. Perhaps those inside moves will be our deadline acquisitions and it will be enough. We'll see what happens...

I can't believe the tribe just got fleeced by the rockies. We gave up waaaay too much. Both A. white and drew p. are going to be top of the line pictures. Alex is already mlb ready and drew will be up soon. If your going to give up untouchables, might as well shore a weakness instead of a strengh. Our weakness is HITTING, not pitching. We needed a rh bat not another starter. At least we got jiminez locked up long term.

The Yankees didn't make any moves this year, and there really wasn't anything major for them to get. The Yankees only had only 2 real "needs," that being a second ace/#2 starting pitching and left handed specialist for the bullpen. The idea that the Yankees needed starting pitching depth is ludicrous. They have 6 guys all of which are capable of starting playoff games currently on the 25 man roster (CC, AJ, Hughes, Colon, Garcia, Nova). And to be fair, it's not that far fetched to think Colon, Garcia, or both can be good throughout the Postseason, since they've been excellent all year long, and it's August already.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, there was no ace starting pitcher available (no, don't tell me Ubaldo is an ace, he's not, he had one great half year). Ubaldo might have been OK for the Yankees, but not for the asking price (Banuelos, Betances, Nova, and Montero). The only pitcher worth that haul would have been King Felix, being that he's a legit ace and still very young. The rest of the starting pitchers were more depth guys, and not the caliber the Yankees could use.

Left Handed Reliever is the other "need." Boone Logan is the current Lefty, and he hasn't been terrible, so they would need a good lefty to make the trade an upgrade. While there may have been one of those guys out there, is a left handed specialist worth one of the top prospects for the Yankees (the likely price for a good Lefty)? Not really, especially considering that Damaso Marte could be back in September. Damaso was a hero in the 2009 World Series owning the Left Handed hitters (and right handed hitters too) of the Phillies. The 2 of them together would be more then enough.

With that said, Soriano, Chavez, and Hughes just came off of the DL and A-Rod should be back in a week or two. Perhaps those inside moves will be our deadline acquisitions and it will be enough. We'll see what happens...
This. The Yankees got a second setup man, a great backup corner infielder, and an All Star Starting Pitcher, and will get one of the games best power hitters ever in a few weeks, and all for the price of nothing, which is better then trading for a SP who hasn't been very good in the past 12 months, or a lefty.

At the end of the day, by not trading them, the Yankees "acquired" Delin Betances, Manny Banuelos (both of which are very highly regarded, and likely could end up being key starters for the big club in 2013), Jesus Montero (who will be traded at a later date most likely for another need), and Ivan Nova (already a solid contributor on the Major League level). AND, thanks to health, they acquired A-Rod, Rafael Soriano, Eric Chavez, and Phil Hughes.

I'd say, by not doing anything, the Yankees had a great trade deadline.

Red Sox just got Eric Bedard which is a pretty head scratcher to me. He pitched awful in his last start against Tampa Bay who he'll face plenty of times in the A.L East. I just hope Clay Buchholtz can come back strong for us in September and come playoff time. Are offense has carried us so far and we've owned the yankees this season.

I cannot lie, I am happy the Tigers were mildly active during the deadline and didn't give up any of our big pieces (Turner, Castellanos, Crosby) for a 2 month rental guy. We gave up 2 lower tier prospects for Betemit, who'll shore up our 3B position (if Leyland would play him more often) and while we did give up arguably our 2nd best hitting prospect (Martinez) along with Furbush (who was doing well in the pen this year) and Wells (who I'd prefer over Maggs and was our 2nd best defensive OF after Jackson), we got another reliever (Pauley) that's been having a strong season and a pitcher that's entering his prime years (Fister) who'll not only close up our #4 hole this year, but all the way til 2014 (which he is signed through). Fisters numbers are much, MUCH better then his record shows, he was just the recepient of the worst run support in the league. He should slide in nicely behind Porcello, which gives us a very strong 1-4 of Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, and Fister. We should be able to win 3 out of 4 versus any team whenever those guys pitch.

We didn't make the big splash, but I don't think we needed to. We filled a hole at 3rd, and if Guillen stays healthy that hole will be filled at 2B. Fister gives us that 4th reliable arm, and this looks like a team that CAN compete in October and should take advantage of their easy schedule (after this 3 game series against the Rangers, we have 1 >.500 team on our schedule that isn't in the division all year - the Rays). If we continue to be as good against the division as we have been I don't see a collapse in sight and we should be celebrating our first division championship since 1987. It's been a long fucking time. 2 months left, with 2 1/2 game cushion on Cleveland. Let's go boys. Leyland (and Dombrowski for that matter) - your job is on the line. Get us a division championship, and you'll be spared at least a year. Don't? Your ass is canned.

This should be a fun last two months. And if the stars align right, we'll be having playoff baseball in the D in October (although signs right now would point to us playing the Red Sox *sighs*).
