Kurt Angle: Injury In Waiting?

Kurt Angle had his first televised match at the 1999 Survivor Series. He wrestled Shawn Stasiak. The crowd chanted "boring", but little did they know what type of an athlete the WWE had given us. He went on to win every major singles title that WWE had to offer, including the WWE Heavyweight title 4 times. Since Jumping to TNA he has been only the second, Triple Crown Winner in that company and currently holds all the titles in that company.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let's rewind to the 1996 Olympics. During the Olympic trials, Angle suffered a severe neck injury, fracturing two of his cervical vertebrae, herniating 2 discs, and pulling 4 muscles. Fast forward to 2003. In 2002 Kurt had start to feel numbness and the onset of what everyone believed to be nerve or spinal damage. When the tests came back positive, they pulled him from all wrestling shows, and only had him do limited things in the ring. After dropping the WWE Title to Brock Lesnar, Angle underwent neck surgery. He took the very controversial alternative surgery. The surgery would reduce Angle's shelf time from over a year, to a little over 3 months. Angle went close to a year with no problems. However once Wrestlemania XX came around, so did the neck problems. Kurt went back on the shelf and did very limited things in the ring. That was the last time Kurt Angle would limit his body.

Since then we have seen a decaying Kurt Angle. Once a fresh Olympic amateur wrestler turned pro-wrestler, Kurt Angle is now a shell of his former self. It may not be evident to some, but If you watch Kurt Angle he has signs of serious problems. Some have said that he slurs his words backstage and even mumbles. If you see Kurt in the ring, you will notice that his left arm is slightly smaller that the other. A sign of atrophy. Atrophy is defined as the partial or complete wasting away of a part of the body. Causes of atrophy include poor nourishment, poor circulation, or loss of nerve supply. If Kurt Angle still has unresolved neck problems, then atrophy is a bad sign that Kurt may still have serious neck and spine problems.

I guess the big question is; who should do something about it? Kurt Angle or TNA? Or more specifically, those with power in TNA? When Kurt Angle showed health issues in WWE he was taken off the road and was given time to heal. When Kurt showed abuse of prescription drugs he was warned, and then fired for consistent abuse. TNA, to the best of our knowledge, has not done anything to Kurt Angle. If they had, we wouldn't be hearing about the Kurt Angle that mumbles and the Kurt Angle that "could possibly die, and then this company will really feel bad that they didn't do anything" - Anonymous TNA Wrestler.

All businesses judge themselves by profit. By the amount of money they generate. Pro-wrestling is exactly the same. Except, they use one more judgement. Buy-rates and ratings. Let's be honest though. Is one man's livelihood worth a + 0.3 higher rating? Is Kurt Angle wrestling three matches on one pay-per-view really worth another 1500 buys? When did morality and ethics take a backseat in business? When will someone step up and say, "This man isn't doing something to ensure his health, and as a business we should care about our staff? I think it's our job to make sure that he is healthy and cared for? I think as a responsible business, we need to step up and make sure that he doesn't leave behind a widow and two children. Let's fix this!"

Within the last 5 years, many of my favorite wrestlers that I have grown up watching have died. Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Owen Hart, Curt Henning. Kurt Angle is one wrestler out there that still makes me enjoy wrestling. If Angle was to suddenly pass away, I don't know of anyone that would be able to take his place. With all of the travesty that has taken wrestling by storm, I don't know If wrestling could survive another big loss.

I agree that Kurt May be putting his body at risk...but in all honesty whatever has happened is Kurts fault. TNA/WWE have not been responsible for his decline in health, WWE took the move to give Kurt time off and let him rest. And as much as there is publicized reports of Kurt been a little off backstage at TNA and alot of people looking down on TNA for signing someone with a problem, BUT there has been many a report of TNA helping kurt and giving him care and a rested schedule for him to work with.

Now no offence to Kurt, because i can imagine the pressure wrestlers must be under, but these things were his choice's and any injury/problem that arises from them he has to deal with, and Wrestling organisation's should only be responsible when it becomes a real problem....Remember....Wrestlers dont have to wrestle matches if they dont want to....its a choice.

And in no way do i blame TNA for this because, i dont believe the reports of how bad Kurt has become since joining TNA are completely true, i have a sneaking suspicion that alot of it is just rumours started by camp wwe to make the opposition look bad....

Any sane wrestling company (if there is any), would have known not to contract Kurt Angle after WWE let him go. Kurt is a great wrestler and all; maybe the greatest of all time.....but I don't think he has been in the right state of mind in quite sometime. Kurt should have never been hired. He should have been left alone to heal and gets his state of mind back in place. TNA contracting him was just a desperation move and proved that they have no idea whats going on in the business. The hiring of Pacman Jones proved and confirmed that.

If Kurt wasn't hired by TNA he would have gone straight into MMA, which would be far worse for him. It would be good for TNA to give him a month or two off in which he can heal up a bit, This is for the good of Kurt Angle, sending him to a specialist to look at his neck as it would be the best thing for TNA as a healthy Kurt would be a better asset than an injured Kurt. I remember back to the time Kurt Angle left the WWE and went to TNA there were people on this forum saying that they feared for his life, and that he could be the next Eddie Guerrero, this is still the case for me.

Kurt Angle is a shell of his former self.

I used to watch him wrestle and be intrigued by this guy. Now when i watch him I fear for his well being. Now after his DUI arrest I fear even more and the fact that he is probably taking a deadly cocktail of pain medication. I even fear for his family. I know i will probably catch flack for this but if he keeps going down this road we might hear of a Kurt Angle Murder/Suicide because i am sure he is in worse shape than Benoit was in. I'm sorry but thats the way i feel. I pray that he seeks help and takes time off to heal.

I would say the same with Kurt as i would with Chris Benoit, no matter how entertaining and how much of a wrestling god Kurt is, the dude is respoinsible for his own health, TNA have pulled all the strings to make sure that he is taken care of, but the problem is that they took the risk on him and if Kurt does pass its the fault of TNA and Kurt angle, after his DUI they should have taken the belt off of him instead they let him hold on to the title and stay in his top spot and truthfully its not a good thing they need to discipline Kurt and show him that no matter who you are you cannot let the company down with this type of behaviour...

If Kurt gets injured TNA thinks there screwed and end up giving the title to some no-talent git.Kurt has to have a break. The man will kill himself if he keeps wrestling. His mental healt ain,t great either.
