I don't care about the "meaning" behind why it's happening or how it progresses the story... it doesn't mean anything to me unless A) the chick is attractive and B) they go all out for the scene. And Kelly Preston in Mischief is my favorite example of this.
I was going to ask you the criteria you use for defining a great sex scene, but I think you laid it out pretty well here. An you'll get no argument from me, with my limited memory of it, that it wasn't a raw, visceral and hot scene. I guess I just see things from a different perspective. What differentiates the sex scene in
Mischief, outside of being a little funny, from pornography? From a memory of a movie I saw maybe 3 years ago, that's the way I remember it.
I don't get this "meaningful" argument that's being made for The Terminator.
The difference for me, and its a general one, not necessarily specific to Terminator, is this: There are several movies with sex scenes that won't win any points in terms of being the hottest sex scene Ive ever seen, far from it. Mischief and Monster's Ball, amongst others on the list, have far hotter sex scenes then thay in Terminator or Boogie Nights, but does that truly make them better ones? And that to me is where meaning comes in. The 10 or so sex scenes in
Boogie Nights aren't as memorable to me as the one you DIDN'T see. But it served to be more meaningful to the movie then any other, which is why it sticks out in my mind. Same logic for Terminator. While by no means was it near the hottest sex scene in a movie, it may have been the most important scene, not only for that movie, but for the entire franchise. And that's where I look at meaning, and differentiate a "great" sex scene from a "hot" one.
Listen, The Terminator is an absolute classic film with or without that sex scene. They didn't have to show anything from it (just give the notion that the two made love) and the film would have remained just as good.
Fair enough. They could have made the insinuation and the basic plot of the movie wouldn't have changed. But I disagree that the film would have remained as good. Here you have an action movie, about world destruction, and you have a tender moment in a hotel, one that proves to be a catalyst for future events that had incredible repurcussions. And the sex scene showed the connection between Kyle and Sara and that was shown in the way they make love. If I want to see a hot sex scene, I can watch porn, anytime. But it's much more rare that you get a scene thats not only enjoyable, but even moreso, important.
Now, you look at a movie like Mischief... the sex scene nominated absolutely makes the movie what it is. Mischief is a decent little movie, don't get me wrong, but that sex scene alone is THE reason to ever sit through it.
Absolutely. I don't remember anything else from the movie other then that scene. I say this with all due respect, but I fail to see the logic that just because a sex scene is the reason for sitting through a poor movie, that automatically makes it better then a meaningful one that only is a piece of a great movie. Again, different perspectives I guess.
Those are the kind of sex scenes that should be voted for... not this "meaningful" crap. American Pie, for example, is not American Pie without the Shannon Elizabeth/Jason Biggs sex scene. That entire movie was built around that one scene alone, and it drew just because of that.
And the scene with Shannon Elizabeth/Jason Biggs to me harldy classifies as a what the movie was built around. He gets her half-nude.....and prematurely ejaculates? Id say American Pie isnt American pie without the Biggs/Hanigan sex scene, not the Elizabeth/Biggs one.
Monster's Ball is the other movie on the list I would put in this category. Without that sex scene with Halle Berry... the movie is complete crap and it doesn't win any awards or gets anywhere near the recognition it got. Period.
But even in the sex scene with Halle Berry, Im going to bring up that word meaning again. The sex scene is a result of two emotionally damaged people looking for solace in some way, shape, or form. And the sex they have in that scene proves to be the catalyst for them forming an emotional bond as well. I won't argue that the movie was good, because I found it to be quite mediocre. But even in the sex scene, there is meaning, even if it turns out said scene is one of the only things that made the movie redeemable.
Now, out of those three, I still implore people to go with Mischief, just based off the fact that Kelly Preston was ten times hotter than Shannon Elizabeth and Halle Berry, which ultimately makes her sex scene the best, lol.
I won't argue this point whatsoever. Kelly Preston is unquestionably the hottest of the three when she was young, and the scene of her standing there naked is incredible. Going on limited memory again, its a scene where if the pair aren't having sex, then they're acting PHENOMENALLY. But I can see the same thing in pornography and leave seeing close to an equally bad movie, with a close to as bad plot. And when Im looking at criteria, I look for more then what made a movie tolerable. It's in that I look for the difference between a hot sex scene, and what a great sex scene is. Much of that is the meaning attached to it, and the idea that a scene doesn't have to be gratuitous to be good. I guess I use different criteria then you, is all, which is why I picked Terminator.
But in fairness, I will go back and watch the scene again, just to be sure Im making the correct decision, and all.
