The BAFTA nominations were released the other day and I'm shocked a thread hasn't been made already. Often the BAFTA's are a good comparison with the Oscar's so I thought it'd be good to discuss them.

No shock that Gravity received the most nominations with 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle being slightly behind. Gravity being nominated for Best British films basically signifies that it's winning whilst 12 Years will win best film.

As with most years I'm both delighted and disappointed with some of the nominations. The Best Actor category is loaded with any of the 5 men having a chance to win, I'm hoping for DiCaprio to win though I severely doubt that. Cate Blanchett should be a lock to win Best Actress since her turn as Jasmine in Blue Jasmine was simply phenomenal and one of the performances I've ever seen. Speaking of Blue Jasmine, I'm thrilled with Sally Hawkins' nom for Best Supporting Actress as she managed to hold her own even against Blanchett.

I'm glad Matt Damon got some recognition for his performance in Behind The Candelabra though it's a shame Michael Douglas didn't. I'm stunned that Matthew McConnaughey and Jared Leto didn't receive any love since I thought both were locks for acting nominations. I'm equally stunned that Filth got nothing especially since I thought it was great and James McCavoy was superb.

American Hustle definitely didn't deserve as much as it has got since it's simply not that good. Bale is the only one I agree with, though I don't mind Adams' nod. Cooper wasn't really that good, I even thought Jeremy Renner was better with how little he got. Lawrence, while good, only got nominated due to it being a reasonably poor year for supporting actress performances.

In the end though, Gravity and 12 Years A Slave are going to dominate which is exactly how I see the Oscars going.

There is going to be significant difference between BAFTA nominations and Oscar nominations. It might be the case that Her wasn't considered for this year in the UK, but it's going to dominate most of the major Oscar categories. Although I loved it, The Wolf of Wall Street has only a snowball's chance in hell of getting Best Director and Best Actor Oscar nods (same thing goes for Christian Bale in American Hustle). Spike Jonze will definitely replace Scorsese when Oscar noms are announced, and it wouldn't surprise me if Russell is replaced by either Alexander Payne for Nebraska or Woody Allen for Blue Jasmine. As far as who will replace Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, that's a four-way race between Matthew McConaughey, Robert Redford, Joaquin Phoenix, and Forrest Whitaker, although Whitaker has less of a shot because they already have one African actor for sure being nominated.
