Giving an artist due credit doesn't need to involve putting that artist over a superior artist. I was willing to indulge you on the Nirvana vs Jimmy Eat World front, Ricky, but there is no way Ben Folds is better that Sublime.
Ben Folds has talent, but Sublime melded Rock, Alternative, Ska, Punk, Rap, and many other styles into not just their entire body of work, but into albums and sometimes into just one song. They were mainstream without watering down their music or compromising their sound. When it was 4o degrees (F) out, putting a Sublime album in made it 80 degrees and set you up on your front porch with a dog, a guitar, a burrito, a joint, and a beer.
Here's another one for you. Bradley Nowell was the most tragic musical death in the 90's. More than Cobain, more than Staley. There was absolutely no limit to what Bradley Nowell could have continued to do with that voice and style. He wasted it, but in a short time he produced more fantastic work than Ben Folds will end his career with.
