Your Favorite Fight

Ferbian

Has Returned.
Well as the majority of the readers in this section probably already knows - I'm trying to get into watching MMA. I've gotten a lot of great responses to which fights to watch. Where to watch it etc.

So it gave me an idea. Seeing as I have so many different options of what to watch. And I'm sure half of the recommended matches aren't even your own favorites. So why not list our own favorites?

Now I know I haven't watched a lot quite yet. But I have watched Rich Franklin vs Chuck Liddell. And I thought it was pretty good. Chuck going down with a heavy knockout blow.

But I'm certain there's more fights out there that are much better in terms of a all-out war. And some that you cherish more than this fight.

So let's hear them.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Tim Syvlia 1. Not many people gave Arlovski any sort of shot at winning this fight and it seemed right. Syvlia was a huge man and was just at the peak of his rise in the UFC. He had already been the Heavyweight champion but was coming off losing the belt to Mir and a broken arm. AA was written off because of the size difference and that no one thought Arlovski could break through the reach of Sylvia. Luckily, AA did get through Sylvia's reach and connected with a harm shot to Sylvia, thus taking him down. How, AA finished the fight was very unpredictable. AA is actually very good on the ground, he just doesn't show it often and when he got Sylvia's leg and torqued it it was only a matter of time.

I love this fight for many reasons. Probably the most important is that it was one of the first fights I ever watched and it instantly made me a die hard fan of Arlovski. It also kind of showed that Sylvia wasn't as dominant as everyone had thought, in fact he was clumsy. Being submitted by Mir is one thing, seeing as he is one of the best submission Heavies in the game, but to be submitted by Arlovski, while not unheard of, was definitely a shocker. And it showed that height and weight could be countered by one hard punch to the head.

Now, Tim Sylvia did go on to beat AA twice in the future, but up to that point and even still today, their first fight was easily my favorite fight to watch. Honorable mention would go to either of the Hughes/Trigg fights and the Yves Edwards/Josh Thompson fight.

My favorite fight has to be the finals of the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonner. I mean that fight was a three round war between to guys who wanted nothing more then to win a contract with the UFC. I believe it was the fight that made the UFC relevant to the main stream.

PRIDE 33: Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi

At the time Takanori Gomi was the Pride Lightweight Champion and the #1 ranked Lightweight in the World. Nick Diaz was coming off highs and lows in the UFC, and was recently released due to refusing to take part of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4: The Comeback, where they wanted Diaz to be one of the fighters in the house.

Anyways, Gomi was the huge favorite in this one, but things didn't turn out the way people thought it would.

The fight started off with Gomi going for the takedown. He got it, and they worked on the ground a little before Gomi decided to let the fight back up to its feet. They go to boxing and them boom... Gomi nailed Diaz with what Diaz would later call a "Hadouken Punch" (Street Fighter fans will get that, lol) and dropped him. However, when Gomi went to pounce, Diaz pulled guard and stalled until he was fully recovered.

Once it was apparent Diaz was okay, Gomi wanted the fight back to its feet, however, at this point, Gomi had already gassed, and man... did Diaz take control. From this point on, Diaz just kicked Gomi's ass with nothing but pitter-patter punches. Gomi every now and then would swing for the fences, but nothing would hit (what Gomi was doing though you could call "Drunk Boxing" because that's exactly what it looked like, lol), and Diaz would just counter with those pitter-patter combos that don't look like they hurt, but best believe if you take enough of them, they will fuck you up.

By the end of the round, we literally saw everything. Diaz even had a really bad cut on his eye at this point, so bad he was basically lucky the doctor didn't stop it.

In Round 2, Diaz comes out and it's more of the same thing... Diaz controlling Gomi with pitter-patter punches. Gomi finally had enough and went for the takedown, but Diaz was able to lock in a Gogoplata on the way down to the mat, and Gomi had no other choice but to tap.

Now, the obvious reasons why I love this fight are obvious: Awesome, fun stand-up, with a Gogoplata finish, which you don't see very often in MMA (I think it's only happened 2 other times). But also the fact that these two are two of my all time favorite fighters plays into it as well. Had this fight been between two no-names, while I would have undoubtedly been entertained by it, I still wouldn't dig it as much as I do today.

But yeah... tremendous fight. Check it out for yourself, if you'd like. I promise you won't regret it.

Sam Stout vs. Spencer Fisher was fucking amazing. Edgar vs. Penn 1 was also incredible. Jabouin vs. Hominick was a great fight.

If I get a mods permission I'll post a link for a website that carries a massive library of MMA fights. Full videos for all the fights. If a mod isn't cool with that you can send me a PM and I'll email you back a link.

I already posted my favorite fight in the stickyed thread so i'll go with what has become my second favorite fight.

Jose Aldo vs Urijah Faber WEC 48

Now this may not have been a very competitive fight, but holy hell was it entertaining. Jose Aldo is quickly becoming one of my favorite fighters in MMA, and his destruction on former featherweight king in Faber. Aldo completely dominated Faber for the five round fight, and it was a testament to how good Aldo is, and how much heart Faber has for continuing to fight.

Round one started, and Faber seemed to be throwing a lot of fakes, looking for the takedown, but could not get one. Aldo dominated on the feet this round, and easily shrugged off Faber's takedown attempts. In the second round is where I think Aldo decided to turn it up. He stuffed takedowns, and landed vicious kicks to Faber that caused Faber to go to a southpaw stance because his lead leg was just being abused. Aldo also landed some beautiful body kicks, which really seemed to hurt Faber.

The third round Faber was shot. His leg was just being abused, and Aldo kept on kicking it even making Faber's leg give out at one point. Aldo also landed some more vicious body kicks that really hurt Faber, and a head kick that also stunned Faber. Faber hit Aldo with a nice right hand in this round, and got a takedown even though Aldo got right up out of it. Round four was just a massacre. Every leg kick Aldo landed made Faber fall to the ground. At one point Aldo had the mount, and at another he had Faber in a crucifix, and was just beating him senseless. I think the fight should have been stopped here. Faber was obviously just being destroyed, and he received a lot of unnecessary damage at this point in the fight.

Round five Faber just wanted a takedown, but could not get it. More domination from Aldo. He ended the fight on top. Now this may not have been an amazing competitive fight, but it showed just how good Aldo was, and how much heart Faber had to continue coming at Aldo even when he had to be carried to his corner at one point. Just a great fight that I love to watch.

PRIDE 33: Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi

I just watched it. And I definitely agree that was a good fight. What I especially liked about it was nearing the final 1½ minute of the first round the back and forth boxing. It truly resembled more of a boxing match than an MMA fight.

And you already know by now that I'm a boxing fan. And the fact that it went to that element. Only for Nick to come out the winner. The majority of the match to me looked like Takanori had the upper hand. But I guess that's how it can end up turning out.

I have to update my own list a little bit. Seeing as I've watched a little bit more. I have to go in another direction away from Chuck and Rich.

As some of you might already have read or heard. I looked around a bit on some video's and such and stumbled across a promo where Mikro Cro Cop was involved. He interested me and I looked further into it.

And I found Mikro in a fight vs Fedor Emelianenko - The match ended with Fedor winning by decision. I found it to be pretty damn good and it really looked like Fedor dominated the match even though Mikro got some great shots in at Fedor. Definitely my favorite thus far.

If you liked Cro Cop and Fedor you should definitely watch Arona vs. Fedor. Many people are of the opinion that Arona actually won that fight. It's a great match-up featuring two top notch grapplers. Fedor being based in Sambo and Arona being a BJJ expert.

EDIT: I know you're into boxing but this particular fight is an absolute showcase of ground game at its finest. If you're trying to get into MMA, this fight will put you over the edge. If you want a link, PM me and I'll give you a library with this and other fights. No downloading necessary.

Yeah, this is how most Nick Diaz fights end up going these days. You should watch more of his stuff; I think you'll really dig his style (though his attitude may turn you off like it does a lot of people; I personally love it, however).

Diaz actually trains with Andre Ward on his boxing by the way, who as you know is currently the point leader in the Super Six Middleweight Tournament. So yeah... Diaz is definitely the real deal when it comes to his boxing, and plus... he has a style like no one else in the sport. That style, plus his incredible chin, make him one of the most entertaining fighters in the entire sport.

I'm never one to be turned away by someones attitude as long as the attitude isn't thrown against me. So I will most definitely try to check out more of his fights. Especially if he is overall like that style. As I already commented I really like boxing and the implementation of it in MMA is really what attracts me a lot. Also of course you cannot forget the wrestling fan in me.

Diaz has trained Andre damn well it seems. And I really think I would have to check out more from him to comment on his style properly as well as his entertainment in the ring. The most of that match was a brawl but it was mostly on the ground. I don't know exactly but I would assume the majority of chins come to advantage standing up.

Damn. I have so many favorite fights thats its insane. If I have to choose one to call my absolute favorite. It has to be Nog vs Couture. Man those are 2 out of my 5 favorites off all time. With Nog being #1 and and Couture #3 or 4 respectivly. That fight was awesome. Watching Nog Sweep, knock down, and control Randy was awesome. Randy put up a hell of a fight, and their single tie collar clinch brawl was epic. My favorite fight all time.

I have many more favorite fights. So I really fell the need to mention them here.

My second favorite fight off all time is Sam Stout vs Jeremy Stephens. That fight was a full blown war. Stephens dropping the iron chin Stout in under two minutes. To Sam Stout picking apart Jeremy with some beautiful kickboxing. To brutalizing his legs with some great leg kicks, and then back to Jeremy boxing Stouts head in with some of the most deadly power I have seen ever in the 155 class. Great, Great fight. Plus I watched it live and am a big Stephens fan, so It was awesome to see him have a fantastic war and get the split decision.

Those are my two favorites of all time. There are tons of others though that I enjoyed as much as these but can not put them into any sort of order like these are my #1 and #2.

My other favorites are:

Griffin/Rampage-Big Forrest fan and it was great to see him pick Rampage apart like that, especially since he was coming off a win of another PRIDE great in Shogun. Forrest even mounted and virtually crippled Jackson in that fight. Great performance from Griffin, and the bout had some GREAT exchanges whenever Jackson could get in the inside without his legs being kicked to hell in the process.

Newton/Sakuraba- Best performance of grappling in a MMA fight ever. Nothing more then I can say except if you haven't seen this go watch it now. Please.

Herman/Maia- Love, Love this fight. It was the first Maia fight I ever seen, and My jaw literally dropped from how good his BJJ was. In the first round he slammed Herman down and almost locked in one of the smoothest Omoplatas I have ever seen. Then transitioned from the Omoplata to a knee bar, until he positioned himself back in guard. That its self was amazing. Then in the second he pulls a standing Herman to the ground with a heel hold and transitions from the heel hold to where he is on top in guard. Then to top it off, he locks in a triangle the next time Herman was in his Guard. After he locks the triangle he uses Hermans own momentum to flip him over into a mounted triangle. Then continues the choke at full force, and GNPs him, till he taps. Awesome fight.

I don't want to babble on too much more with this. But my other favorites are, Ken Shamrock/Don Frye, Kawajiri/Gomi, Franklin/ Wanderlei Silva, Frank Shamrock/Ortiz, Minowa/Hong Man Choi,Sokoudjo/Arona, Nog/Herring 1, Nog/Sylvia, Sergei/Ninja Rua, Nog/Sapp, Mizagaki/Torres, Horn/Liddell II and Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler.
Those are my favorites besides the top two.
