You Know What's Sad (re: Cena vs. Bryan)?

The assertation that John Cena can't 'wrestle' or isn't a 'wrestler' is just as tired now as his very own rebuttal that wrestling is his life, he's the quintessential professional, he's has a strong fan base even if lots of people hate him, he's not going anywhere - as if that isn't the exact same position that all of his opponents are in. Stalemate.

I don't think WWE needed to work the smarks, and many of those realise that there's nothing wrong with Cena in the ring which makes me question why they used that material. If it was just to try and gain him sympathy with those very few straddlers, I think they were fighting a losing battle. If it was to make Bryan get some heat and seem like an idiot, once again, I don't think they're fully aware of their audience. I thought it was an interesting promo that was equally well performed by both guys, I thought Bryan really rose to the occasion and stood with Cena, and I think above all this match is not about wrestler vs. sports entertainer, it's about the WWE way of being made a star vs. the international way. Internal vs. external.

You know what would be awesome... if Brock Lesnar and John Cena feuded again and Lesnar went the whole "you can't wrestle" route.

Imagine the smark head explosion.

I thought both guys were perfectly solid in their interaction on RAW. Obviously Cena was better on the mic, but he's better than most in that regard anyway. I really enjoyed Bryan in the encounter as well. The fact that was he was saying was asinine and pandering to the masses didn't bother me at all. Both guys' intensity was terrific in my opinion.

I agree.

The content of the segment, while I understand everyone's point, is almost secondary to me; I don't care so much that Bryan's promo perpetuated the "you can't wrestle" argument because the intensity and palpable emotion of the segment made it entertaining and sold the feud.

It is hard to take the complaints of those that can't remember 5 years ago seriously. I'd talk about my opinion on what Bryan said if I was interested and I may be at a later date, however, let's talk about how much bullshit it is that Cena claims he is being loyal to his fans. Cena pretending he has always been a PG god is just as cheap seats as whatever you are claiming Bryan did. Sometimes it surprises me how seemingly ignorant Cena fanboys are of his career pre-Marine. It was the two sides of a "debate" you see here. The materially was equally of that quality. The only true difference was delivery. The only part Coco and Sam are picking up on is which side they usually find themselves on when it is discussed on here. They wanted a reason to root for DBD and they got a reason to root for Cena. Maybe it is time for them to grow up and realize there is nothing wrong with enjoying disliking Cena.

Is it too late for me to be a complete troll and try and hijack this thread in a totally different direction by answering Sting?

Matt Hardy is a bigger star than Sting. Half the people that I talk to that used to watch Sting back in the 90's when they were kids think he died years ago. Then they watch him on TNA and they themselves die a little inside. Matt Hardy fans clearly aren't to that point just yet.

Bryan prolly did his best promo delivery on Raw. The material while often heard, along with the "We're tired of having you likeness" and the 'pandering to kids' chestnut is fine.

Till H ran smugly down and tried to cool things down. Fuck why not just have only Randy come out and hold the case up like he did later. That would've made them stop bitch slappin' each other.

Yes, because having a 6'5 280 pound behemoth defeating someone using a tedious leg hold is much more believable than him beating someone half to death with his bare hands.

I buy Bryan as a submission specialist because he looks the part, just like I'd buy Cena as being strong enough to slam someone through the ring if he wanted to.

Uh... That was kind of the point I was making?

Hogan/Cena could easily do a hundred different moves if they wanted (maybe not hogan today, mind you), but why the fuck would they. Like you said, it wouldnt suit their size and style. My complaint was at the idiots who chant "you can't wrestle" or say that Cena is not a real wrestler. Any of these guys could easily broaden their moveset, theres no point in it though!

Matt Hardy has fans?

When Cena is delivering promos of that quality, with that much conviction, I don't see how disliking him is the mature option.

Punk is an example of somebody whose side I was strongly on when facing Cena, because he was making legitimate points and not regurgitating a catchphrase from the internet which, in reality, doesn't mean a thing. I'll never do a 180 on Cena for the same reason I'll never do a 180 on Punk, Mysterio, Christian or, indeed, Daniel Bryan.

Also, presuming that Cena was claiming he's always been a 'PG god' - which I think is quite the leap - then I hardly think that's material on par with "You're not a wrestler."

He's no god of mine.

Then again I'm agnostic.

One could appreciate the quality of the promo without liking the individual delivering it. The mature option on entire topic is that it's a work. It doesn't matter what degrees of truth or fiction Cena and Bryan incorporated into their promos. Their ultimate goal was to get people interested enough to shell out for the pay-per-view. If there are people who were duped into thinking that stuff like John Cena's Make-A-Wish wish grant record or Daniel Bryan's pre-WWE globetrotting have anything to do with what happens on Sunday, then point for WWE. Whether one is hating on John Cena for their perceptions of what he is or isn't or hating on Daniel Bryan for what he said that Cena is or isn't, it's equally immature.

I really didn't like the Make-A-Wish thing being brought up man. It just makes me cringe. It breaks whatever kayfabe I'm engrossed in and I end up hating WWE for inter-twining the kids' ailments/wishes and angles. Hope they never ever do that again.

And I don't see any problems with that segment. I saw the segment again today and while I get why people are rolling their eyes at Bryan spouting "You no wrestler" at Cena, he is also by and large poking a stick at WWE's way of wrestling programming. The Miz (somehow) put it best in the backstage fallout segment in that one titled 'Snake Eyes for WWE Title'. How Bryan isn't the WWE prototype and this will probably be Bryan's only chance.

If only Bryan had discussed the differences between a Sports Entertainer and a Wrestler with brightly coloured flowcharts.

At the same time though, If you're that sick kid that loves WWE and John Cena, getting mentioned on WWE RAW was most likely totally awesome for him.

If I was the kid I'd throw my John Cena 'double ok' hand symbols up and mark the fuck out!!

Edit: This kid ain't sick. He's an actor. And a dwarf. He's 36 years old.
