We’re breaking news here. We have been told by several sources that El Generico has been signed to the WWE.

PWPonderings is like the Wrestling Observer for indy wrestling. I know you'll probably go, "Aw, I never heard of it it has no validation, God tell me when blah blah blah," but the only reason I'm posting this is because I also know they are connected to El Generico. And for them to directly report it too is out of the ordinary as they rarely post news, never mind breaking news, so take it or leave.

Just on the topic, I'm slightly like... wow, Generico before Steen. I like El Generico, hes done really well for himself as a "minor league" wrestler, hes one-half of the one feud Ring of Honor definitely drew on (Final Battle 2010 had over 20,000 buys, more than the average TNA PPV is an impressive feat for an indy), hes known for getting the fans really pumped for matches - but he doesn't have "it" to me. Hes also going to be the smallest wrestler they have in-terms of muscle, although he has put some on

I can see them using him as a comedy character, possibly the biggest comedy character they'll have. He'll get fans going and everything. But whereas with Punk and Bryan I said, "Yeah, they'll succeed," I'm not saying that with Generico right off the bat.

Also just to add, he recently canceled several dates for what people assumed was an injury, but it was never confirmed why. People thought he'd appear on the TNA X-Div show on Sunday but there was a recent report that he and Mike Bennett had met with WWE officials.

But it's pretty cool.

Masks are marketable... (that being if this is indeed true and they give him a gimmick where he keeps said merchandise seller)

I'm gonna ask a question, and probably look like an idiot in doing so.

I know who he is, I understand the gimmick, but I don't follow ROH very closely because I'm not in one of their TV markets and I'm lazy. I've watched some of his matches on Youtube and he looked sloppy. I've seen some good matches, like his fight with Steen at Final Battle 2010, his tag ladder match with Steen vs the Briscoes, his ladder match against Steen in PWG, but most of what I watched was sloppy. Is it part of the gimmick, did I just happen to watch a bad string of matches, have I watched too many MLP videos before watching wrestling and it corrupted my mind, is he a guy who gets over on a gimmick alone?

I wonder how soon WWE changes the name, reinforcing the fact that they aren't in on the joke

This wasn't said without purpose, don't ya know?

No such thing, Yazzie. And, if you want a real grasp on El Generico, you should look toward Chikara. Everyone else is on his dick because of ROH. I find his work in Chikara much better.

I Completely understand why you would react that way Dragon Saga.

But, considering Steen's weight and knee issues, I just find it hard to think that the WWE will ever give him a serious look no matter how deserving he clearly is.

Then again, I never thought until the rumors came out a few weeks back that the WWE would ever consider Generico either, so...

If you don't mind me asking Yaz, who was he facing in the matches that you caught?? I have never found Generico's work to be "sloppy", It could have been a by product of his opponent- which may be an issue at first when he's facing WWE developmental talent as well.

I hope to god we get an NXT program between him and Kassius Ohno.

I've said before in threads questioning whether WWE should sign Steen that I wouldn't like it out of total bias, as hes my favorite wrestler right now and has been for quite some time. But as so many people point out, hes basically this generations Mick Foley. His size isn't stereotypical of what WWE wants, but then again, nor is El Generico's. Only guy I know with less muscle mass than Generico is Brian Kendrick.

No he isn't.

The more apt comparison, frankly, is that he's this generation's Shane Douglas. That in itself isn't a bad thing, but Foley had so much more natural talent than Kevin Steen, could sell so much better than him, and could cut an awesome promo. Kevin Steen could never cut a promo in WWE nearly as half as good as the one's in ROH. Foley just had it, while Steen doesn't have as much of "it"

Just because they're fat
Doesn't make them the same, man.
Mick has more talent.

Disagree, wholeheartedly.

Before the "Wrestling's Worst Nightmare" stuff which has been watered down now to the point its only a moniker, he was in places like PWG and CZW cutting promos that were getting him noticed the same way a guy like Foley got noticed back when he was trying to sell Cactus Jack. Steen's are usually much more comedic, but the promo level was there.

Then when you take Steen's size into account, he can do several variations of a moonsault despite his size. He does a perfect Frog Splash, he can barely fit through the ropes yet still hits a Suicide Dive. Listen to his Art of Wrestling podcast with Cabana and he doesn't like the whole indy trait of "hit as many moves in the space of twenty minutes," instead he likes to tell a story, which is what he does and why his reign as ROH World Champ has been so entertaining from a match perspective - albeit Jim Cornette booking him constantly in no DQ matches was horrible but Cornette's done so that issue is gone.

I'm not saying he is to the standard of Mick Foley, I'm saying he is the closest resemblance to Foley this generation has. Few have the talent in this generation that those of the last one do. He represents what Foley did in the 90's - the guy who by all accounts probably has no right to be a wrestler, but is simply too good to deny.

If we're being honest, using that standard, CM Punk is probably a closer comparison to Mick Foley.

People seem to forget that Mick Foley, before he went to WWE, was a pretty big star in the #2 promotion in the world. It isn't like Mick was this great big fish in a small pond; we all may think Mick didn't belong, but he had so much natural charisma.

If you're looking for a guy who made it in wresting, in spite of himself, CM Punk is a more apt comparison to Foley. If we're talking about big fat guys who have potential, then sure, they're the same

I actually never looked at Punk and compared him to Foley... yeah, I'll give you that one.
