Next year's Fastlane ppv is a SmackDown branded show and is the final ppv before WrestleMania. The event is set to take place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio and there are reports that the arena's website lists the main event as AJ Styles defending the WWE Championship against Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.
If this is legit and changes aren't made, then this all but guarantees AJ Styles heads into WrestleMania WWE Champion. Now we all know that the plan for Roman Reigns has been to face Lesnar at WrestleMania, that's basically been the plan since just after this year's WrestleMania, but this announcement, again, if it's true, doesn't mean automatically mean he'll win the Royal Rumble, but I think the odds of it do go up. When you think about it, it wouldn't be all that surprising if Vince had Reigns win the Royal Rumble AND go into WrestleMania as Intercontinental Champion because...well that's just something that's very easy to imagine Vince doing for one of his pet projects; he's going to want Roman Reigns looking ridiculously strong, more so than usual, so I can see this happening. Of course, the leaves the question as to what Raw will do for the Elimination Chamber ppv; If Reigns wins the RR, then a #1 contenders EC match wont' be happening so could Lesnar defend the Universal Championship in an EC match?
There were and have been reports of a SmackDown star winning the Royal Rumble and face the WWE Champion, which led to the various reports of Reigns winning a #1 contenders EC match at the ppv so he can face Lesnar. If a SmackDown star wins the Rumble, you'd think that the odds on favorites would be the four he's allegedly slated to defend against at Fastlane, with the exception of John Cena. This raises some potentially intriguing and potentially groan inducing possibilities for the directions the WWE and Universal Championship matches for WrestleMania, if the report is correct and plans don't change over the next 3 months.
