Wrestling Music

Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
Upon listening to some 80/90s wrestling themes, I realized how completely different the two eras are in this area. You have the earlier days in which most of what you had mainly original themes that were instrumental only. Now, you have a lot of songs that are by professional bands and have full sets of lyrics etc. My question is which do you like better?

I'd have to go with the earlier formula. Instead of a song that's just similar to a character (Voices), you'd have something custom made for the wrestler, like DiBiase's music. It offers a look inside the character instead of just at them. It can also set the tone for the wrestler, instead of just being a rock song. Any thoughts on this?

Well entrance music can some times play a huge role in character developing and what not. Take Shawn Michaels for example, although I loved the Rockers theme music, Shawn's whole sexy boy music was the added touch in the HBK character, and Shawn has never changed it, personally I don't think he will. As far as what I think is better I'm going with todays entrance music. Because it really defys some ones character.

Overall, I would say today's theme music is better. But the all-time greats will last forever. Everyone pops when they hear Hogan, Flair, Dibiase, Savage, LOD, Hart, etc. Those particular ones will always stand out.

Great Thread

The rock songs for characters are nothing special. They are just a generic style rock song thats catchy. But Kane, Batista, and Jeff's original Jim Johnston themes are WAY better than their rock remixes. Cena is the only major song vs. theme music exception. That song defines his character. Even The Game's original solo music had a big Johnston thumbprint.

The guy knows what he is doing and should be doing these themes while he is still able to.

It really depends on the character you're talking about. Let's take into account the early days.

Ted DiBiase had an original song made up for him, that was unqiue in his own way. It fit him, because it was his song. It had lyrics, if you want to call them that in which it repeated "money" over and over and over.. but it fit him a lot better than that of any actual bands song likely ever would.

Yet on the flip side, you have a Hulk Hogan. Hogan had Real American which was also an original song, but yet at the same time it had full lyrics and it sounded like it could've easily been a #1 top hit by any known band back in the day. You couldn't of went out and gave Hulk Hogan some custom made instrumental music, it just wouldn't have fit the same way "Real American" did.

So, you jump to today's Wrestling where guys like Cena come out to theme songs that they've actually done themselves. It fits them, because its custom to them. Yet guys like Edge and Batista use theme songs that are actual real life songs, from actual bands. Those songs could fit anyone else in the same manner they fit Edge or Batista.

So, when it comes right down to it. There is no right or wrong answer to which is better. Some custom music fits specific groups of Wrestlers more so than it'd fit others. And vise versa with real life songs. Its all in regard to what the character is.
