Backstory

It’s August 2005, and the summer is well under way. World Wrestling Entertainment has been riding high now for the past few years, and is THE promotion in North America. Granted TNA have grown rapidly over the past year also, but they are still nowhere near to the level that the WWE has established. My name is Steve White, I’ve been in the business for around 5 years now, and this is my story.

I’ve been watching wrestling since the 1980’s, who could forgot Andre The Giant being body slammed by Hulk Hogan, or the feuds between Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat. As a teen I lived, slept and breathed wrestling. I simply couldn’t find any other way to gain the adrenaline rush that I found whilst sitting in the front row at what was then known as ‘Prime Time Saturday Night’ I loved the entertainment we were offered as well as the actual wrestling itself.

It wasn’t until 5 years ago; I looked for more in wrestling. Yes that’s right, until five years ago I was merely like each and every one of you, a fan. I was the one who couldn’t miss an edition of WWF RAW, WCW Nitro. I was the one who couldn’t get enough of ECW and the product they offered. But 5 years ago I made a decision. I wanted to make a career out of wrestling. Now, I wasn’t stupid I knew I could not wrestle to save my life. But I knew that wasn’t going to stop me, I was going to work in wrestling even if I was just Eric Bischoff’s cleaner. I set about contacting the major wrestling promotions back in late ’99 and not surprisingly, they told me politely as possible to “fuck off.” I knew I had to prove that I was different to all the other candidates they saw come and go each day, each week, each month, and each year.

I decided the best way to go was to look at the internet. It was around this time that the internet becoming a big player in wrestling, and there was a definite market out there for the wrestling product, and so wrestling websites were popping up left, right and centre. I quickly bought together a small team of ex-co workers, friends, brothers of friends, friends of brothers of friends, the list is endless. The website was open on the first on January 2000, and was simply known as Grapple Fanatics. We were the site of the millennium, and before we knew it were attracting thousands of visitors a day. I ran with the website for the best part of three years, before I decided I wanted more. I was struggling at the time, I needed money and couldn’t afford to spend time and much needed cash on the website. Whilst in essence the website paid for itself, in that we earned some money from a membership section etc, I just didn’t have the will to continue.

So now it was January 2003. I was about to close Grapple Fanatics, and had become a well known face in the internet wrestling community. I knew I wanted to go further in the wrestling world but I just didn’t know how to get there. You can imagine my shock a few days after I had closed the website when I got a letter through from World Wrestling Entertainment offering me a job with the company. The company had recently got through the transition from being known as the World Wrestling Federation, to World Wrestling Entertainment, and had a whole new attitude. I was invited to come to titan towers and have a meeting with the big man himself Vince McMahon. So that day I grabbed everything I had shoved it in a suitcase and informed my Landlord I would be leaving. I grabbed the little cash I had left and got on the next plane to Stamford.

To cut a long story short, the meeting with Vince McMahon went extremely well, and before I knew it I was working with the WWE booking team on the shows such as Raw and SmackDown. Everything ran smoothly for the next few months, and I was happier than I’d ever been. I had a decent job, a decent salary, a roof over my head, what more could I possibly want or need. I thought nothing could go wrong, and it didn’t for another two years.

So January of 2005 came around, and it was my two year anniversary of working with World Wrestling Entertainment. I felt accepted for once in my life, into a family, a wrestling family, a family I could relate too. However, I was starting to have negative thoughts about the way the company was run. There were far too many people backstage with too much power, and it got the point that at No Way Out, the angles I scripted were completely scrapped. I had no problem with this, but I would have at least like to be informed before this happened. I bit my lip and tried to continue, but I knew that I was going to ultimately resign.

So here I am now, August 2005, and it’s been two months since I officially stopped being an employee of World Wrestling Entertainment. I had decided back in June that I was done with the wrestling world for good, but living in Stamford that was difficult to avoid. I moved to California, and tried to move on there, and I did. Well, I did for a month. Wrestling was too much of a drug for me, and I once again was being drawn to it. I knew I had left the WWE on Bad Terms, and that I had no chance of getting another job there. But what could I do? I made the decision there and then. I was going to set up my own wrestling promotion and make it grow.

I had $50,000 left from my days with the WWE, so I immediately invested that into the promotion. I owned an apartment in California, and had paid off the rent, so luckily for me that was not much of a problem. I put my apartment in Stamford for sale and sold it for $150,000, hence making a total of $200,000. This was my start up capital, $200,000. It isn’t much when you consider what I wanted to do with it, but it was all I had and would have to do for now. All that I knew was that it was a start and damnit; it was the first rung on the ladder. I also realised that on this kind of budget, I would have to do a lot of work myself, with little help. I knew I could do it, and World Wrestling Anarchy was born.

To Be Continued…

You cannot run a wrestling federation without superstars, and so I knew that I needed to focus on assembling a roster of sorts. Now, WWA at this stage is a small company, so I don’t need to recruit that many wrestlers, or even splash out that much. I quickly called some people from back in my World Wrestling Entertainment days, and I managed to assemble what some may call a roster, but most would call a group of misfits…but hey, I had a strict budget to keep to, and they came cheap! Who’s complaining!

I surveyed the list of the guys we had bought in for our first show, and thought back over what I could remember about them.

Aykut, Age 25: A good all round wrestler with brawling skills and some speed. He also is known to be pretty good with the technical side of things. Perfect to bring into WWA, I know I can do something with this guy! He’s got a nice amount of Charisma, and likes to play off the heel ‘Arabian’ gimmick. That was sure to create some controversy, and for WWA, controversy equals publicity!

HATE, Age 26: Giving this guy a face gimmick was definitely a risky move, but I decided to go with it. I think given the chance he will easily be able to pull off a “Stone Cold Steve Austin” style character, hence putting him over as a face. Another good brawler, with a decent amount of speed, although his technical wrestling needs a little work.

Anthony Barlett Jr, Age 19: One of the youngest performers signed to a deal, this guy is a great technical wrestler, also a lightweight. I am confident he will be able to add some excitement to matches with some real high flying moves, however at the same time he can offer some technical skill. This guy has some great microphone skills too, which is always a bonus!

Barish, Age 25: OK I’ll be honest I didn’t want to sign this guy; I was more or less pressured into it by Aykut. Need to keep Aykut happy though, as he is one of my main event stars, and hence the signing of Barish. He is not bad with his brawling and technical wrestling, but could still learn a few things.

Mr Boombastic, Age 24: Another lightweight wrestler, Mr Boombastic plays an absolutely fantastic face character. He is another all round good wrestler and is excellent with his technical skills. The type of guy I could match up with pretty much anyone and the match would be decent.

Yukon Eric, Age 34: Probably the speediest wrestler signed to a deal, coupled with his decent mic skills. Slightly older than the majority of the other guys, I see him as being a bit of a locker room leader. Always a good thing to have someone the guys can look up too and relate too.

Shawn Stylez, Age 18: A strong up and coming talent, and he said he would work for nothing and just wanted the opportunity, so I have nothing to loose! He is a good solid opening wrestler, with a nice gimmick and some excellent charismatic skills. I’m sure I can find a use for him somewhere!

Kevin Steen, Age 23: The most expensive guy on the roster, he better have been worth signing! Some amazing technical skills here and another very speedy star. He can also brawl when he wants to, and is decent on the mic. No doubt good value for money, hopefully he will bring some good technical wrestling combined with speed to WWA.

I also signed a couple of members of staff to lend me a hand with the day to day running of the promotion. I hired a referee called Stick Keller. Nothing special, but he’d do. I also bought in a writer to lend me a hand with promos and gimmicks etc. I got an announcer called Mike Paterson who was OK but nothing special. I could not afford to hire a color commentator yet! Finally a road agent by the name of Ainsley Bowie. He would be able to help me liase with my audience, the wrestlers themselves and help with promotion. A huge asset.

So I had a roster, and some staff. I knew we were almost ready to put on our very first live show in front of an actual audience. Every show needs promotion, so I decided to pump $100,000 cash into that. We had some extra cash from some sponsorship deals we had managed to sign with some unknown companies, so that was a bit of a boost. Our main sponsor was the Wrestling Observer so that was excellent news as it immediately allowed us to reach out to our target market.

Hell yes it’s a lot of money and a huge risk, but without an audience, we have nothing.

First Show Coming Soon!!

hey would u know of any independent organizations in Arkansas where a guy might find work. I'm 18 I weigh 178lbs. and am 5ft.9
I have had 3 matches in my so called career.
All I've really done is jobbed.
And I will just do that just so I can wrestle.

WWA: Blaze of Glory

OK so August 20th had finally arrived and it was finally time for our first ever event, to be known as Blaze of Glory. I had literally covered the local area with advertisements for the show, all the way from putting up posters to getting in contact with local radio stations. I just hoped it would pay off.

I assembled my team of misfits for a pre-show motivational speech, and told them to go out there and show that crowd what we have. My staff members and I then went and sat right near to the curtains so that we could watch the show. We decided to put all our thoughts on each segment together and then give some overall ratings, and I used that as a basis for what I felt worked and what did not work.

Introduction

The first ever WWA show, Blaze of Glory, opened with our colour commentator, AJ Sparxx in the ring with a microphone. The microphone boomed around the arena, as the few people in the crowd listened on.

AJ Sparxx: Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to World Wrestling Anarchy’s first ever wrestling show, Blaze of Glory! I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for purchasing tickets for this event! I promise that you will not be disappointed with what you see here tonight, the quality of the talent we have backstage is extremely high and of course in our main event here tonight we will be crowning our first ever WWA World Champion!! We at World Wrestling Anarchy would also like to thank our sponsors for their support, The Wrestling Observer, EGM, Pizza Pizza and of course IGN.com. Without them, the majority of what you see here tonight would not have been possible. Anyway, enough of me, so in true wrestling event fashion….Lets get ready to ruuuuummmmble!!

Great opening to the show by AJ, it definitely helped to motivate the talent backstage who were standing by me. The crowd seemed pretty into the show so far as well, even though we had just begun. A strong start non-the-less.

Anthony Barlett Jr. vs Shawn Stylez vs Yukon Eric

All three men square up in the middle of the ring, and try and get into a good position, before running at each other and breaking out in a brawl in the middle of the ring. Barlett takes control by taking both mean down, and starts to taunt the crowd. All three men hit some nice moves back and forth, although all also botch a few moves. I guess that’s what you come to expect from wrestlers that rarely get to wrestle. Barlett eventually picks up the victory by drop kicking Stylez to the outside, hitting the Superkick on Yukon Eric and then making the pin attempt.

A decent opening bout, it was not anything special, but it got the crowd in the mood for some action and that was most important.

Aykut Promo

Aykut: For years now, I have been disrespected by the country that you all like to call home, America. For years, I have been discriminated against by people like you. By each and every one of you! I will no longer be made fun of; I will no longer allow you to disrespect me. I deserve to be treated with the same respect of every American, if not even more than a normal American! I will show you tonight what I will do to get this respect. Tonight I face a dirty American, who likes to call himself HATE. What kind of name is HATE? Only a stupid American would have that kind of name! HATE, I don’t care what you think of me. I don’t even care what these fans think of me. What I do care about is kicking your ass all over this arena, getting the 1…2…3 and walking out here the WWA World Champion!

OK so basically he ripped the hell out of everyone in attendance. I guess that works, he does have an Arabian gimmick and I’m pushing him as a major heel against HATE as a face. Nice promo, I and the other staff members were pleased with it. He got the crowd pretty fired up too, which will no doubt help out the main event match later on.

Rising Son vs Chris Cage

Both men are extremely over with the crowd, Chris Cage playing an excellent face role with a Hulk Hogan style “All American” gimmick. He throws his American flag into the crowd where some of the fans in attendance scrabble to get hold of it. Rising Son certainly looked evil when he made his way down to the ring, his mask making him look all the more menacing. He has an excellent heel presence. Both men use their speed to an advantage in this match, and use a lot of high flying moves. Spots include Cage hitting a moonsault from the inside of the ring to the outside, and Rising Son bouncing off the top rope and then hitting a hurricarana. The match finished as Rising Son had Cage on a table on the outside of the ring. Rising Son being the evil son of a bitch that he is then sets the table on fire. He takes Cage to the top turnbuckle, inside the ring, and then hits the Springboard DDT, from the top rope, through the flaming table on the outside!! He then follows up with a Frog Splash into the wreckage and makes the pin for the victory!

What a display by both men, and the crowd loved it! Some nice fast paced action, well smoothed together with a massive finish, which got the crowd even more on their feet! Most could not believe what they were seeing when Rising Son put Cage through the flaming table. An excellent performance from both men, both playing off their gimmicks extremely well, no doubt their efforts will be noted!

Aaron Stevens vs. Chad Toland

Stevens made his way to the ring grinning and playing up a “comedy” gimmick, which the fans seemed to enjoy. Many were cheering for him. Chad Toland made his way down to the ring to boos from the fans in attendance, with some yelling “queer” at him, remembering his brief stint in World Wrestling Entertainment. He just sneered at the crowd and made his way into the ring completely focused on Stevens. Aaron Stevens mainly dominated the match with some excellent amateur wrestling style manoeuvres coupled with some brawling. He looked set to win the match after he hit his patented finishing move – the downer. Suddenly, as the referee started to count, Tank Toland came running through the crowd and into the ring, absolutely destroying Stevens with a chair. The referee disqualified Chad immediately, but this did not stop the Toland brothers completely destroying Stevens after the match. Much to the crowd’s dismay both of the Tolands stood tall over Stevens’ prone body even though Chad had indeed lost the match.

Shawn Stylez Issues a Challenge

Shawn Stylez: I don’t know how many of you all noticed, but I was not actually pinned here tonight, and I did not actually submit here tonight in my match against Anthony Barlett Jr. and Yukon Eric! In fact, I didn’t deserve to loose! Anthony proved that he doesn’t care about you fans earlier when he spat at you as he left. Well, I don’t think that was right and I want to get some justice! That is why, I am issuing a challenge. I am issuing a challenge for WWAs next show, on September 17 2005, Hell or High Water! I want you Anthony! I want you, one on one in the middle of this ring! No Holds Barred! I’m going show you exactly what justice is…and you will never forget the name of Shawn Stylez!

Good solid promo to set up the match for next month’s event. I think that Shawn carried this out perfectly. Cool stuff and this will hopefully attract some of the people in attendance back next month.

Mr Boombastic vs Kevin Steen vs Havoc – Winner Gets World Championship Shot at Hell or High Water

The crowd laughed as Mr Boombastic made his way down to the ring with a boom box, and he then got into the ring and started working out, doing fitness moves. He even got some of the crowd dancing with him, what a character! Kevin Steen made his way down second, with an arrogant look on his face, mouthing that he was he was the best and that this match was going to be easy. Finally, Havoc made his way down to ringside and tried to get the upper hand by attacking Mr Boombastic before the bell had even rang. Kevin Steen uses his technical, speed and brawling skills to dominate here. It looks like he is going to win, where Mr Boombastic hits the Boombastic Smasher out of nowhere on Havoc and makes the cover for the quick victory!

WOW! What a performance by Steen especially! He was everything I had hoped for and a fairly balanced wrestler over all. He could go far in the wrestling business; I just hope he stays with WWA! Mr Boombastic was great too, I am sure the main event next month will be good.

HATE vs Aykut – WWA World Championship – No Holds Barred Match

The crowd were on their feet and the main event had finally arrived! HATE made his way to ringside to applause from the fans, and a USA chant started up. The chant continued as Aykut made his way to the ring with an Arabic flag draped around his shoulders. The crowd also started to hurl abuse and throw paper cups at Aykut. Both men immediately take full advantage of the fact that this match is no holds barred and beat the hell out of each other with all kinds of items – Trash cans, chairs, kendo sticks, tables, Singapore Canes. You name it they probably used it. They also fought in and out of the crowd, which helped to ensure they felt even more a part of the show, and also allowed them to throw beer in the face of Aykut!! Both men bladed pretty deep as well as the blood started flowing everywhere. The match finished with Aykut picking up the pin fall after hitting his finishing move – the Arabian bottom on a steel chair, completely breaking the back of HATE in half!! Aykut is your World Champion as the show ends and AJ Sparxx gets back into the ring to remind people to attend next months event.

Best Match of the Night: Mr Boombastic vs Kevin Steen vs Havoc
Worst Match of the Night: Anthony Barlett Jr. vs Shawn Stylez vs Yukon Eric

Well, I left the arena that night a very happy man. I ensured that I thanked each and every talent and member of staff for making the show a huge success. It was everything I had hoped for and more!! I made sure each talent that had wrestled had their cheques, and I then went over to my computer to check on the numbers for the show and see if we had managed to make a profit or not!

OK, so about 28 people had attended the event. At least it was a start and we made $560. The main thing was that we had a huge payout from our sponsors, who were paying us $100,000 per show. So that’s $400,000 in just from that. Then there was $99,000 out in worker costs, I had to pay each talent for appearing on the show, and $1000 in production costs (The lighting and the ring etc)

What is more, our public image went up from 20% to 24% meaning that more of the public knew about our product. Hopefully this will help improve the attendance at the next show!

In other news, I got an e-mail saying that WWE had signed Jerry Lynn…another career ruined no doubt!!

Breaking News...

Dave Meltzer is reporting that independant wrestler, Rising Son has recently checked himself into a rehab facility to help deal with a cocaine habit. Rising Son most recently appeared at new wrestling promotion, World Wrestling Anarchys first ever show - Blaze of Glory, where he beat former WWE development talent Chris Cage.

It is thought that WWA owner Steve White was looking to push Rising Son a long way over the next few months. It is apparent that these plans have now been shelved, and it is unknown what future Rising Son has with the WWA.

Steve White refused to comment on the situation earlier today at the WWA Offices, although we expect a formal press release later this month.

Very interesting promotion.

I like the originality and will keep following this to see where it goes......
