Who do you root for?

"Cool Guy" Jensen

Undertaker for Champ!
Ok, so we all know that your typical WWE matchup will usually be heel vs. face. That's how it usually is. But on a few occasions you might see an unlikely match that features a heel vs. heel or face vs. face. WWE does these types of match so that we can have a little more variety in the matches that we see on ppv or on television.

When you see a heel vs. heel or face vs. face match, how do you decide who to cheer for? Here are a few face/face or heel/heel matches or fueds that have taken place in the past...

John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 23. It seemed that WWE was making it seem like HBK was the heel going into this match. But the fans at Wrestlemania seemed to root for Cena to lose. I personally was rooting for John Cena to retain.

C.M. Punk vs. Rey Mysterio at Armageddon 2008. This match was the finals of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament. I think we all knew that it was safe to say that Punk would win this match, but just for that, it made me want to root for Rey even more.

Edge vs. Big Show at Wrestlemania 25. Before John Cena told Vickie that he knew about her dirty secret, Vickie announced that at Wrestlemania Edge would defend the World Heavyweight Championship against The Big Show. If, Cena was not added to this match, who would you root for?

Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy at No Mercy 2008. Jeff Hardy is the ultimate face, so I automatically cheer for him. Especially against a guy that I can't stand like Triple H. I really don't understand how he is still a face.

Batista vs. The Undertaker at Backlash 2007. I didn't include their Wrestlemania match because I'm not too sure how many people would have really wanted to see Batista end the streak. Knowing how The Undertaker is and has always been my #1 favorite superstar of all-time, of course I cheered for him.

Those are just a few. So, when you see two heels or two faces facing each other in a match, how do you choose who to root for? And why? Is it just who you like more? Or who deserves it more? What? I'm just curious.

I root for whomever I like more in that particular match when a face/face or heel/heel match occurs. It really does'nt go deeper than that. I want the guy I like, and think is better, to win. Usually, I have an opinion on both guys; how I like both of them, and if I like one more, that's the one i'm naturally going to cheer for, to win. Like I said, that is as heavy and deep as it gets, nothing more, nothing less.

And, I know this isn't the best heel/heel or face/face matches thread, but I thought I'd point out that Hulk vs. Ultimate Warrior was possibly the best, and you did'nt list it. The audience was equally divided, with choruses of pops from each fan base; It was truly intense. That's the ideal face/face match, imo.

The only reasons I didn't add The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan match from Wrestlemania VI is because... 1.) I wasn't born when the match occured. 2.) I never actually saw the match. 3.) I was trying to put matches that were a little bit more current.

I did hear that it was a very great match, I'm just in no place to judge. Although, if I was around to see the match, I think I would cheer for Hogan, so of course, I'd be disappointed to see him lose.

It's alright, I just thought that match deserved to be mentioned here. If you've never seen it, I'd recommend searching for it, as it was overall pretty epic - unless you don't like old school matches or Hogan's. But it is the epitome of how a great face vs. face match should be; it had all the elements of one. It had the crowd split on who to cheer for, and it was tough for them to decide, as both were hugely over then. Ultimately, the fans seemed nearly split, and it made the match very intense and dramatic. This is how the rare face/face matches are meant to be, and you should perhaps check it out.

I was cheering for Hogan, because I liked him better. It was bitter sweet to see him loose, as I liked Warrior as well.

On topic, I root for the guy I deem better, and who I like. In that particular case, it was Hogan.

I make it a rule with myself that I will only cheer for the people I like or want to win.

I could end the post there, you know, since I have already said what I wanted to but here is my reasoning behind that strange comment. Sometimes the WWE wnat you to cheer for someone. Take for example Stone Cold Steve Austin. He was a face that the WWE shoved down our throats. I personally fucking hated Austin. Why did he always have to better Triple H? Pah! I am a Triple fan and I will always cheer for him, no matter who he is facing. You know, if silently watching the match whilst wanting them to win can be classed as cheering.

Either way, I do what I want regardless of the alignment of the Superstar. When Triple H eventually turns heel, which he no doubt will, I will cheer for him then too. I don't buy into all the shit that WWE want. Cheer for whoever you like best and you won't go away disappointed.

Yeah I root for who I think is better when it comes to situations like that, like the other night with Jericho + Big Show vs Legacy, I was of course routing for Jericho.

John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 23. It seemed that WWE was making it seem like HBK was the heel going into this match. But the fans at Wrestlemania seemed to root for Cena to lose. I personally was rooting for John Cena to retain.

Much as I love Cena, I actually wanted to see Michaels win this one, mainly because it had been a while since HBK had held some gold.

C.M. Punk vs. Rey Mysterio at Armageddon 2008. This match was the finals of the Intercontinental Championship Tournament. I think we all knew that it was safe to say that Punk would win this match, but just for that, it made me want to root for Rey even more.

No idea this match had even happened

Edge vs. Big Show at Wrestlemania 25. Before John Cena told Vickie that he knew about her dirty secret, Vickie announced that at Wrestlemania Edge would defend the World Heavyweight Championship against The Big Show. If, Cena was not added to this match, who would you root for?

Would've rooted for Edge, but that's because he'd have looked like the underdog

Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy at No Mercy 2008. Jeff Hardy is the ultimate face, so I automatically cheer for him. Especially against a guy that I can't stand like Triple H. I really don't understand how he is still a face.

At the time it was HHH, I didnt think Hardy deserved the gold

Batista vs. The Undertaker at Backlash 2007. I didn't include their Wrestlemania match because I'm not too sure how many people would have really wanted to see Batista end the streak. Knowing how The Undertaker is and has always been my #1 favorite superstar of all-time, of course I cheered for him.

Didnt care, I just knew I was gonna enjoy it.

When it comes to 2 heels or 2 face I just root for who I like the most, even though Jericho's character is far more hateable than Legacy's fact is he's been around for much longer, has earned the respect of practically everyone and for that reason, despite Jericho being a cunt, Legacy look like the stuck up little brats.

I actually root for it to be a good match and hope for the writers/match planners not to f it up. As far as who wins or loses it really doesn't matter to me. If I'm entertained it's good enough for me. Now when it comes to title matches I may cheer for a certain person who I'd like see hold the belt to change things up again but again being entertained is more important these days.

I'll see what I can do. I was/am a huge fan of Hogan and his matches. No matter what stage of his career. I have enjoyed nearly all of the Hogan matches that I've seen, that includes Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, Triple H, Chris Jericho, Sting, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Randy Orton, Undertaker, among others. As for Ultimate Warrior, I guess I would've liked him then, but now... he really can't stand the guy. He seems like the type of person who will do anything just to get attention.

I root for heels regardless I find them to more entertaining as competitors and It's a known fact heels make better champions.

I usually root for these guys.
Raw
Randy Orton
Jack Swagger
Shawn Michaels

Smackdown
Y2J
Rey Mysterio
Dolph Ziggler

ECW
I'm a huge Christian Mark.

John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 23.

C.M. Punk vs. Rey Mysterio at Armageddon 2008.

Edge vs. Big Show at Wrestlemania 25.

Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy at No Mercy 2008.

Batista vs. The Undertaker at Backlash 2007.
.

HBK becuz i hate cena as champion and i really want to see hbk hold gold... i dont think from wen i started watching wrestling (of course i dun remember much from wen back when the original DX was in action) i have neva ever seen hbk hold a world title... (not counting the crappy tag team he had wit cena prior to WM)

619 All the way... huge fan of the rey mysterio i was never really big on Cookie Monster Punk except for his debut promos

Big Show because i like seeing giants dominate its fun seeing big dudes dominate

Jeff Hardy because he is one of my favorite wrestlers at all time n i really thought he deserved the gold finally!

Undertaker because hes the deadman also one of my top 3 favorite wrestlers and im not really a big fan of batista....

you forgot one important match.. WM25 HBK VS RIC Flair....
i mean obviously hbk was gunna win but who did u really want to win?
honestly i wanted hbk

Idk... to me it depends on the superstar whos in the match... normally i go for the big dominate guy when its a heel... when its a face it depends who i like more.... unless its like Carlito vs Chris Masters in which i dun care for....

I heard that WWE was making plans to have Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair at Wrestlemania 24, several weeks before. From that very moment, I knew that HBK would be the one to end Ric Flair's career. I, of course rooted for Flair for the simple fact that I knew he would lose. But, of course that didn't happen. I wanted to see how long Flair could be an active superstar, but it ended for him at age 59.

first of all i root for there to be a wardrobe malfunction when the divas fight. Besides that I root for whoever is going to give me a good match like any time angle was a heel vs face i would root for him, because he would just steal the show, and he just brings it. right now i root for morrison, because of his ability in the ring and all the stuff he could do is just amazing, cannot wait for him to get to the main event status he deserves it. same thing with jericho and michaels, the stuff the do in that ring is amazing. even there match wrestlemanaia 19 was off the chart at one point started rooting for jericho, i have always liked jericho no matter what mic skills, and ring skills

cannot wait to see jack swagger in a real fued with someone he looks like he will very good

swagger should have been on smackdown so he could have good matches with rey, hardy, and the undertaker. do not see too many people he could have good matches with on raw maybe hbk, hhh, cena if that, maybe kofi, and mvp, but to show his ring abilities he should have been on smackdown

I really root for the guy that i respect the most as an entertainer. whoever can make me interested in their matches and what they have to say.
here's a show by show breakdown.

RAW:
Shawn Michaels
Jack Swagger
Ted DiBiase
Triple H (depends who he is up against)
MVP
Maryse

Smackdown:
Edge
Chris Jericho
The Undertaker
Dolph Ziggler (the future)
John Morrison (the future)
Melina
Hart Dynasty (the future)

ECW:
CHRISTIAN (all time favorite-will always cheer for the captain)
Zack Ryder
Shelton Benjamin (if he would just get serious and strive to be the best)

Ya know... I cheer the faces if I like them and I boo the heels if I like them. For a heel to be a heel, they need to be "hated" and "loathed" by the fans due to the "evil" actions. So if you cheer a heel, it defeats the purpose of said person being a heel. So I love Randy Orton and The Miz is growing on me, so if I were at a live event and they come out I will boo them, because that is what they want to hear and need to hear.

The same with a face, if Cena comes out I will cheer like crazy for him, because that is what he needs from the fans.

Now if Triple H comes out, I won't do anything, because I personally don't care for him, so I won't boo him because he's a face, I won't do anything, it's the same if it's a heel I don't like, I won't do anything.

i usually go for the face over heel but when theres 2 faces or 2 heels i pick the guy i think deserves it more, youd be surprised how much i root for shelton benjamin, sometimes if i dont like the face il go for the heel, for example i dont like john cena, because hes all round too queer for my liking, the way he jumps around when hes makin his entrance, the way he speaks very fast changing his tone of voice from mild to fashion critic like, and lets not forget the trail of unfunny jokes that only seem to build a small reaction from women who just have the vapours and a few kids going along with the women, so in every cena match i boo him:)

It's pretty simple really, I choose my favourite to win the match. For example, it Shawn Michaels is in a face vs. face match I'm always going to root for him to win it because he's my favourite wrestler. If I don't really have a favourite between the 2, I'll look at the feud so far, who's cut the best promos? Who's made me want them to win more?

Me? As the creator of this thread, I will answer this by saying that I will usually root for one opponent or the other. The set of wrestlers that I cheer for the most include THE UNDERTAKER (face), Rey Mysterio (face), Randy Orton (heel), John Cena (face), Christian (face), Kofi Kingston (face), Kane (heel), and both Hardys (face).

Now, depending on the situation of the match I will root for Batista (face), Chris Masters (heel), Jack Swagger (heel), Santino Marella (face), Carlito (heel), Shawn Michaels (face), Charlie Haas (heel), Finlay (face), R-Truth (face), Goldust (face), Shelton Benjamin (tweener), and Tommy Dreamer (face).

For divas, I almost always root for MARYSE, Mickie James, Layla, Gail Kim, and maybe Katie Lea (if she wrestled more, or was on Raw or Smackdown).

Easy, I root for who I like...so it's not as if I'm always cheering the heels or the faces, rather the wrestler who I prefer. So, for example, as a fan of Kane I will always root for him no matter who he is against, no matter if he is face or heel...as long as it's Kane I will root for him. Other people who I will root for include Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Undertaker, Edge, Goldust, Dolph Ziggler, Tyson Kidd, Maryse and Melina just to name a few. If two wrestlers are competing who I don't particularly care for then it's usually just a snap decision there and then as to who I cheer or want to win. Again, if it's a case of your traditional heel v face then I root for who I like more...so it wont always necessarily be the face (who WWE want us to cheer) in the same way as it wont always be the heel. It's just a case of who I prefer really.
