The Brain

King Of The Ring
Once upon a time the WWF Intercontinental championship was a highly coveted and well respected title. Most of us feel the title has lost some prestige over the years. I want to make it clear that this thread is not to discuss the prestige of the title today. I want to look back on the glorious history of the title and see which match people feel was the greatest IC title match in WWE history. When discussing some of the classic matches of the early 90s IC matches come up often. So which was the best of the best? I have listed the ones I’ve noticed get the most attention around here but feel free to vote other. For those that vote other I’d like you to post your opinion. Your vote of other doesn’t go very far if we don’t know what other means for you. Vote using whatever criteria you like. You can factor in the actual in ring action, hype, historical significance, or whatever else you want to arrive at your decision.

This was not an easy decision for me but I decided to vote for Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith at SummerSlam 92. I fully admit that a large reason I voted this way was due to the crowd and atmosphere. It is entirely possible that if this match took place exactly as it did hold for hold in the middle of the card in The Baltimore Arena for example, I would not have voted for it (although I still may have). However the fact that it was the main event in front of over 80,000 people is a variable I can’t ignore even if the only reason it was the main event was to satisfy the British fans. This just felt like a huge match and the participants really delivered on the biggest stage. Strangely enough I think what pushed me in this direction was there was no real feud between the two. It was just two great competitors giving it their all to be able to hold the IC title. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good feud. I just think this match made the IC title seem like the most important thing. I could easily be swayed in three or four different directions but for tonight Hart vs. Smith gets my vote.

A couple things I want to point out. I did not list Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior from WM6. Even though it was technically an IC title match I think we all think of that as a world title match. If that’s the match you want to vote for go right ahead. I didn’t list any matches from the past ten years because quite honestly I don’t think there have been many memorable matches in the past decade. Maybe I’m forgetting something that deserves mention. If so speak up so the past decade is represented. I also don’t have any from the first eight years because like most people here I’m not old enough to remember the early ones. I’ll be interested to see if any old schoolers mention any matches from the early years. So let’s hear it. What was the greatest Intercontinental title match of all time?

EDIT: I forgot the other option. It will be corrected shortly.

All worthy of anyone's vote.

For me it is a tie between Steamboat/Savage at WMIII
and
Hart/Perfect at SumSlam91.

BOTH were great technical matches that stole the show of the PPVs there were on.

I agree with you although in the back of my mind I keep changing it thinking it's quite a toss up.

Rock/HHH was awesome, but I feel HBK/Razor @ WMX was better so for me it's DEFINATELY between the best damn pure wrestling match for the IC title in Hart/Bulldog vs the best damn ladder match for the IC title in HBK/Razor AND it was IC champ vs IC champ which added a special element and it was at WrestleMania

So, I dont know, I'm actually taking that back, I think it's kind of a tie. I'd like to say Hart/Bulldog, maybe it is, but HBK/Razor was damn innovative and had two elements the other match didnt

It's a real huge toss up, but I think it definately comes down to those

Savage/Steamboat
Hart/Bulldog
HBK/Razor

those are the top 3 of all time and I'd put Rock/HHH & Perfect/Hart in a top 5

EDIT: Damn, I just saw the poll and I feel stupid because I just recently watched this match on WWE OnDemand, but Savage/Steamboat is greater than both and really is one of the best matches ever, I just forgot it was for the IC title, the match itself is what sticks with me more

I really liked Randy Orton vs RVD when Orton won his first singles title.
Also, i liked the Battle Royal for the new IC title at Judgement Day 2003. I think it legitimized christian as a heel on his own.
But they cant compare to classics like Michaels / Ramon and Alot of Savage's matches

Absolutely Bret Hart vs British Bulldog.

They were crisp, clean, pretty much perfect the whole time. I've never seen Bulldog so 'on' before. The crucifix driver he hit Hart with was awesome, way better than I've ever seen in the WWE. It deserved it's award of Match of the Year from PWI. To me, this was the match that set the standard for what an intercontinental championship match should be, raising it from the very first intercontinental match I saw, Savage vs Steamboat.

When I think of a mat technician, I think of how these two wrestled in this match.

Best technical wrestling match I've ever seen in the WWE or WCW or TNA.

BTW Allow me to plug this because I think it's relevant here. It's got some highlights from the Bulldog vs Hitman match, in particular the crucifix driver.

Although Macho Man vs Steamboat at Mania is one of the greatest matches in history I believe that Bret Hart vs Davey Boy is the greatest Intercontinental Title match in WWE history. There was such emotion in the match. That match was pretty much perfect. This was when the IC title actually meant something. That was the main event and it was well deserving of that spot. There was such great technical wrestling in that match. Not only did the wrestlers put on such an amazing match but the fans made that match so much better. The crowd was off the charts. The match had everything. It had heart, some of the best wrestling in the world, intensity, and emotion. Two of the best wrestlers of all time in one of the best matches of all time for one of the most prestigious titles of all time at one of the biggest PPV's of the year in the main event. Nothing could be better then that.

I picked Piper vs Bret Hart WM VIII because that match told such a story that it was freakin beautiful... lol... but is was hard not to pick Rock vs HHH SS 98... for some reason I just love that match... I have probably watched it more than any match... someone really knows their stuff... both of my personal favorite IC matches were on the list and that surprised me... I knew the Bret/Piper match was an obvioius one like others on the list, but did not know that others appreciated the Rock/HHH match as much... I guess it had a lot to do with that kinda being the breaking point of them "CLIMBING" ;) from the upper mid card to headlining together, going full circle.

I picked Piper vs. Hart at Wrestlemania VIII as well. There's a lot of great matches to choose from, as the OP gave us in the poll. For all the reasons that Marzyk stated is the reason why I chose this match. There was just something about that match for me that I just don't see anymore in the current WWE product. It's not strange that I'd pick a Bret Hart match as my favorite. It's hard to pick against Savage or the other two Hart matches on the poll but I'll always be impressed with the drama and storytelling that Piper and Hart put on display for IC Belt.

Austin vs Rock. any of them :)

toss up for me.
Savage vs Steamboat - 2 of the greatest on the biggest PPV in history

Bret Hart vs Bulldog - another mat classic and also one of the biggest audiences of all time, and if i'm mistaken probably the only time the IC title has been the main event\
picked Hart vs Bulldog but only just by a hair

i just miss the grandeur of having the IC title and the World title as the true centerpiece of the whole show instead of just another match if they are defended at all :(

I'd like to thank this topic for getting me to watch the Hart Bulldog '92 match, I actually had not seen it.

I'd still rank Savage and Steamboat #1, when I think IC title, I think of that match immediately, and it even is one of the first things that comes to mind when I think WM.

I'm going to go a little new school on you, but I think an honorable mention would have to be Mysterio vs Morrison. That match was absolutely fantastic. I fully credit that match for solidifying Morrison as a future Main Eventer. If you haven't seen it, please do.

Oh man. This is such a hard question to answer. I've actually never seen a poll on these forums I've had more trouble answering. I'm going to agree with the OP and go with Hart/Smith, but JUST by a hair. There are so many amazing matches on that list, especially with HBK/Razor being one of my favorite of all time, but this one takes the cake in terms of IC title matches. You'll never see the title mean more than it did on that evening, Summerslam '92. I remember when I first went out of my way to find that match. I watched it probably 3 or 4 times. Great, great thread.

 really i have no idea what match your talking about???????????? Morrison main eventer hahaha not in this life time

im gonna go with bret vs mr.perfect that match was way to sick, stole the show at summerslam and still to this day whenever summerslam is around the corner they always show this match on raw as a summerslam highlight

Micheals vs Ramon at WMX. What a great match, had it all. Both these guys were looking towards main event careers and by god did this match act as a push for both the men.
This match really was the one that revolutionised the ladder match, and was a defining moment for SM's career.

Never gets old, made the IC title worth wearing.

Savage vs Steamboat is one of the 3 best matches of all time, and is easily the greatest IC Match of all time. This was when the title actually meant something. Hart vs Bulldog was fine, but Davey Boy was high on drugs for the match and borched several key points in the match. Cannot be seriously regarded as a classic. Does represent how great Bret Hart was in the ring though.

Bret vs Piper was a great match at Mania 8, and a sleeper IC Title classic was Santana vs Steamboat in the Boston Garden. Tiocked every box of the coward heel chasing and beating the hero face.

I'd have to go with the Bret Hart v Bulldog match from SummerSlam '92... it really was a great great match, and truly deserved to go on last like it did

an honorable mention would have to be the Bulldog v Shawn Michaels match from the final true Saturday Nights Main Event specials in '92 where Michaels won his first Intercontinental Championship... its often overlooked, but it really was a great match and worth the watch if you get a chance to see it

I went with Hart/Bulldog at Wembley Stadium because it was one of my favorite stories and a good match the story they told was amazing and the moves they did were executed excellently (of course by the Excellence of Execution) and definitely tops my list of greatest IC match ever

I was at SS 92 so its got to be Bulldog v Hart for me. Although Steamboat v Savage is probably one of the greatest matches ever imo. I'm gonna go a bit leftfield though and say....

Warrior v Honky Tonk man (SS 88) this is probably my biggest markout moment ever. HTM was the longest reigning IC champ ever at 18 or so months. He was supposed to face Beefcake but Ron Bass cut Brutus' face to shreds with the cowboy spur. So HTM issues an open challenge to anyone in the locker room. The Warriors music hits, he comes running down the aisle and pins HTM with the splash in 30 secs. Awesome moment and great promo from HTM afterwards. A classic of a different nature.

I'm going to go with the match I watch nearly every week!

Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith at SummerSlam 1992
This match was rated 'Best match in SummerSlam history', I never get tired of watching this match, a great way to send the British fans home happy, and what better way than to have the Davey go up against his brother-in-law in an epic match! Powerhouse vs. Technician!
I love the ending aswell, just the way the crowd erupted, arguably the biggest pop ever!! When Davey counted the sunset flip, an amazing moment!

Honourable Mention
  • HBK vs. Tatanka from WrestleMania IX - This was was pretty good, mentioned because it isn't on the poll.
  • HBK vs. Razor Ramon from SummerSlam 1995 - This was part 2, HBK came out on top this time!

I'm going to go a little new school on you, but I think an honorable mention would have to be Mysterio vs Morrison. That match was absolutely fantastic. I fully credit that match for solidifying Morrison as a future Main Eventer. If you haven't seen it, please do.

This made me throw up in my mouth a bit. I've seen the match, and it didn't solidify Morrison as anything but another midcard wrestler with a few tricks that won't go anywhere. And it isn't deserving of an honorable mention, due to the fact it's below every match listed.

Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania III

Many say its the best match of all-time, and it possibly could be. Some say its the match that made Ricky Steamboat a legend and it very well may be, and when you think about how he held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship around the time of its height, and then compare it to the IC Championship reign he had it's an example of how good the Intercontinental Championship once was.

The testament to the match is it only lasted a mere fifteen minutes, but the pace was fast as lightning and if you watch it you can see how tired they are even at the half way point. George Steele's presence at ringside and the angle they set up with his crush on Liz was pretty funny too, especially when Savage goes to use the ring bell and Steele stops him. Overall, everyone thought Savage had it when he hit the Elbow Drop; its kind of what makes the match so good, that the Elbow Drop was rarely kicked out from and Steamboat doing it was considered even rarer.

Steamboat vs. Savage is what set the IC Championship to such a high degree. Some forget how much prestige it once had, and very few times has it returned to that level. The nearest its came in recent years was when Jericho and Mysterio battled over it, but even they were nowhere near the level Savage and Steamboat put it on.

Great match, the fact that somebody gave John Morrison an honorable mention when the bout at WrestleMania III is an option gives me diarrehia.

I had to go with Savage/Steamboat.

The build-up was tremendous. The way they started it with just a random match between Savage and Steamboat. Then Savage makes the infamous attack that "crushed" Steamboat's throat. They played it up as he may not wrestle or talk again. They did the doctor segments, the therapy segments. They even got his wife to do a segment about how devestating it was to her and the family.

All the while, they manage to keep George Steele in the mix as a supporting character, which fit since he and Savage had feuded for most of 1986. Then Saturday Night's Main Event rolls around and Savage is in a title match with Steele and Steamboat returns to help Steele "kidnap" Elizabeth.

Then comes the biggest WrestleMania in history (based on crowd) and they stole the show out from under the much hyped Hogan/Andre match. If you watch the match, there wasn't a single missed spot. If there was, they did the best job ever at covering it up. Steamboat gets the win and the crowd goes completely nuts because after 6 months, he finally got Savage in the ring and took that which meant the most to him (character-wise).

I am not taking anything away from any of the other matches in the poll. From an in-ring standpoint, they were all tremendous. HBK/Razor at WMX set the standard for ladder matches. Bret/Perfect was a technical masterpiece, especially when you consider the physical condition that Curt was in at the time. I could name the good points to every match listed as I have seen them all, most of them as they happened.

Again, my bottomline is Savage/Steamboat is the best IC title match ever.

I'm going to say HHH vs The Rock at Summerslam '98! This match is my favorite singles ladder match, and every time I see it, it reminds me how far the IC title has lost its prestige over the years. Plus, this match was the launching pad these two wrestlers needed to jump into being a star! The Rock being in control most of the match, taking advantage of Helmsley's (that's what they used to call him) knee. Only to lose by a low blow from Chyna. Not to mention, it takes place at MSG. This is by far MY favorite IC championship match of all the times!

I will go with Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat WrestleMania III it was a classic match and really made both man shine like stars. This match will remain in the wwe forever as an incredible match.

I voted Hart/Perfect even though Savage/Steamboat is the greatest match of all time. I figure Macho and The Dragon will get the majority of the votes, so I wanted to show some love for Bret and Curt. As that match was as close to Perfect as you can get. No pun intended.

Savage/Steamboat may be the greatest IC title match of all time, but Bret Hart is the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time. Just look at how many of his matches are on this list. Bret/Perfect, Bret/Davey, Bret/Piper, etc.

It's pretty hard to argue against Steamboat vs Savage. As Dragon Saga puts it, this match made Ricky Steamboat. I think it also made Randy Savage to a degree as well. What makes this match amazing is that it looks very modern and by extension evergreen. Finishers are countered, there is some great chain wrestling, the pace is amazingly fast for a match in 1986 and the story is amazing and well entailed into the match as well. I think that there is nothing at all amiss with this match.

The other two matches from the list that I like a lot are HBK vs Ramon from Mania 10 and Rock vs HHH from SummerSlam 98. Both are ladder matches but both are different as chalk and cheese. There are spots in the Mania 10 match that I haven't seen get performed ever again. I am also amazed when some people call this match as Shawn vs a Ladder because I do feel that Ramon held up his end of the bargain pretty well. He performed the more physical spots in this match while Shawn performed the more high flying ones, which is the way it should have been. My favorite spot from this match is HBK jumping onto the standing ladder from the top rope and splashing onto Ramon. Never seen anything like that ever again.

Rock vs HHH is also a great match and a match that I use as an example to shut people up when they say that the Attitude Era only featured nonsensical brawling. This match is pretty much evidence that you do not need high flyers or flashy moves to pull off a ladder match. The story is simple with both guys targeting the others' leg and using the ladder as a weapon to do so. The crowd was hot for both guys and HHH really bumped hard in this match-up. I always wanted to see another ladder match between the two of them when they hit the main event. I always get this feeling that this ladder match is very severely underrated in favor of the stuff Michaels has performed over the years.
