What Say You About Remakes?

Over at IGN, they have an article asking people about the idea on HD remakes. Simple cash grab or something people can benefit from? With games like Ocarina of Time getting a remake for the 3DS, a rumored HD Halo Combat Evolved remake, a Sly HD collection coming out later this year along with more remakes on the way. With so many remakes you would think that it kind of does come across as cash grab.

Not to long ago the first two god of war games got a face-lift and were reissued on the PS3 and managed to sell nearly a million copies. Which might suggest that, given the right game, people are willing to purchase these remakes if the quality is there. These days the movie industry is flooded with remakes from all generations, so why not games?

I think its a good thing because it takes classic games we have grown up with, loved and enjoyed and it reintroduces them to a newer generation that may not have been around or had the privilege to enjoy such great games. It also shines them up and looks brand new in order to satisfy this spoiled generation of HD graphic mongrels who might not play a game because it simply looks dated. It has the potential to create a whole new fanbase. As long as there done correct and they had something to it,maybe new features...not just a game with a shiny new outer coating.

So what say you guys? Good, bad? Money grab or not?

What games would you like to see remade? Anything you would change or add to the game in order to improve the game overall?

It all depends on the remake itself. For example OOT is needed, one of the best games ever made but it dated as hell graphically. Update those then people of this generation can experience the magic we did without a prejudice of "this looks shit"

It's also good because a few remakes get released in the UK that we didn't get originally. FFIII, Dragon Quest IV/V and soon to be VI as well as the one we all know in Lost Levels.

It gets a new generation to play games they've not been able to, including the very rare Ico and Shadow of the collosus which is due an HD remake, or the vastly under appreciated Okami on the PS2 which was remade for the Wii. It got more people into the game who otherwise would not have played it.

I'm all for the idea. I'd love to be able to earn trophies/achievements for updated versions of the Silent Hill and Resident Evil series. I know Capcom did this with Resident Evil for the Nintendo Gamecube and I was quite annoyed that they didn't re-release the game for PS2.

I like the concept of remakes. There are alot of games that are difficult to find and to have them released again with updated graphics saves me both time and money. Even if it is just something simple like the Wii's virtual console where they re-release the game as it was so that a new audience can enjoy it. There is also the case (like what happened with my SNES) that your old system doesn't work anymore and it is near impossible to find new parts. Having a much more accesible way of getting the games is a great idea in my eyes.

As for actual remakes, using Lee's OOT example, it is a perfect way of letting people continue to enjoy the game without having to deal with rather poor graphics (by today's standards anyways), because there are a surprising amount of people who still play these games quite regularly, and it's nice to update it for those people. Why should they have to keep playing it with outdated technology just because it was released a decade ago? Might as well update it for those who love the game originally, while allowing a new generation to see what all the hype was about.

I love the idea of remakes. Games like OOT, FF7, and other favorites from long ago need to be remade for the younger generations to gain the same experience as we have. Kids today are not interested in games with old, and outdated graphics. They need top of the line looking games that can capture their attention. Square Enix has done a somewhat good job by making games like Final Fantasy Crisis Core, and even a movie to promote FF7 to the younger generation, however I feel that a remake is necessary so that these great games can capture kids attention.

I love remakes for games because they breathe life back into older legends for a new run with a new fanbase. A great example was the PSX remake of Final Fantasy 1. It gave an old legendary title a chance to appeal in modern form (at the time) to a new fanbase who might never have tried it otherwise due to graphical dislikes. Was it as good as the original? No way. Did it give a ton of new fans a chance to try it out in a way they'd enjoy more? Absolutely.

Remakes are great in the sense that they give the older games a second (third, fourth, etc in some cases) chance. They also help the games stand the test of time longer. Final Fantasy's first six games have lasted in popularity as long as they have partially due to several remakes of them, to give new generations of gamers a chance to check them out with a less biased opinion of the gameplay or graphics.

A game I would love to see remade is.... come on, do I even have to say it? Final Fantasy 7. Fans are BEGGING for a PS3 remake. Imagine the most popular RPG of all time with PS3 or 360 graphics and an action based battle system similar to Dragon Age or Fable 3. All while retaining the same summons and limit breaks from the original. DO IT, SQUARE-ENIX!!!! It could still be turn-based. It could still have random encounters. Just make it already! We as fans want it!

The only downside to remakes is that they are rarely as good as the original. I just finished Lufia 2's remake on the DS. While it was fun, it pales in comparison to the original. This is sometimes the case. Remakes do not always have the impact that their older counterparts do but they are a great asset for the gaming industry because they give new fans a chance to play great older games and also offer a large potential profit for the companies who do the remade versions. Finally, the great games that deserve another run get to be enjoyed again. Everyone wins with a remake. Well, usually.
