What If: The Gingrich Edition

So Marianne Gingrich said that Newt Gingrich wanted an open marriage, meaning continuing his affair but staying married to his then wife. However this is all ok with the GOP because Newt has been forgiven of his sins apparently. Let's assume what Marianne says is true.

Now for the what if:

How bad would the reaction be if a Democrat did this? Suppose Obama and Michelle said they had an open marriage. How fast would the GOP be basically condemning them to hell?
