Yes, this is a very sick question but one I have considered myself. I am a Manchester United fan (Soccer) and back in 1958 a plane came down in Germany carrying The team which is known as The Busby Babes (After the manager Sir Matt Busby) who were wonderful to watch and heading for legendary success. 8 Players were killed in the crash, including the crown jewel of the team at the time, Duncan Edwards. He was just 21. Tommy Taylor and Liam Wheelan also were great favourites among the 8. It was a tragedy.
Manchester United got over it and 10 years later won the biggest tournement in Association Football, The European Cup. Now, Manchester United are the biggest football club in the world next to giants like Real Madrid and Milan.
So there is the proof that a major tragedy can be overcome. However, Football has one major governing body. FIFA. Wrestling is all independent. WWE is an independent fed with big testicles. Chop those testicles off and it'll crumble just like any other will.
But who are the biggest testicles?
Vince McMahon, if not the whole family, need to be counted. They do the stuff backstage and they do it well. The show is clean and polished. Yes, the product is often under scrutiny but it's easy to watch. WCW back in the 90's and TNA today are very roughly produced. The camera angles aren't always perfect. The announce staff are poor (For example, at TNA Victory Road, The announcers completely missed a low blow spot which led to a heel victory, yet it was smoothed over as a clean win... WWE never ever miss that)
Triple H would be a big loss. Yes, everyone is a bit bored of having The Game on top. But He's a fantastic worker and makes bad people look good in a similar manner to The Undertaker. He is not afraid to take a beating or a big spot. Say what you like, He will deserve his hall of fame spot. Hopefully not Posthumously. This would hurt WWE a lot. They wouldn't have the safety net he provides.
John Cena. He makes me cheer. He makes you Boo. It doesn't matter either way because the noise is deafening and noone goes to refill their Pepsi or take a leak when he's on the mic or in the ring. He's not the greatest in ring performer but he's a fantastic draw and highly entertaining. He's a perfect champion. Just like Hogan was. Noone else makes that kind of noise. Not since The Rock or Stone Cold. It's often a bigger pop than when the lights go dark.
The Undertaker.
Often gets a bigger pop than Rabba DOOOO! Undertaker has been electrifying people long before that word became an adjective. I would cry if I had to watch a memorial video on Raw. I did for Eddie and Benoit. I always mention Undertaker as one of my faves in the same breath as those two. BUT. I have to stress, please don't take this as sick or hurtful. As I have said, Undertaker is THAT guy for me. This is hypothetical. If he were to die today. It wouldn't be as bad for WWE as it would have been 10 years ago. No Ministry. No Basis for Kane's character. Shove HHH on the same ill fated flight and what would Hell in a Cell be today? As big? Would we have the Elimination Chamber? There is a HIAC thread on this board recently which proves how big HIAC is because of these two men. No DX reunion. Where would HBK be? Stephanie might have married someone else. No Legacy. No push for Orton and Batista... not as we know it anyway. Those two coming out of Evolution is probably the best thing to happen to the 00's... alongside Cena and Edge's title win.
Now? Undertaker will not make Wrestlemania 30. Triple H and Cena will. Fact. We have to face it. The best of Undertaker DVD could already be released. Nothing else will happen. We will have the same rivalries over and over again. Face off... Fight... Taker gets beat. Rematch... Taker wins... Rubber match... Taker says rest in peace and wins a gimmick match. Taker isn't gonna give us an epic promo. He isn't gonna have another big match. Wrestlemania prooved that. He gave us everything and hasn't been seen since. Most take a month off... He's taken 4. I'd shed a tear. Vince wouldn't.
Shawn Michaels
I want him to be at Wrestlemania 30. I can see him there and I can't see the rumours of his retirement being this coming Wrestlemania having any weight to it. But it will happen soon. Again, if it were to happen today... I do think it would hurt. Last year, he and Jericho had the feud of the year. Brilliant on the mic. Great promo's. Class entertainer. This year he'll have the Match of the year wrapped up.
Am I a hypocrite? He's done the same thing as Undertaker and not been seen since Wrestlemania. True but Undertaker has less time left. Shawn also does not have as many injuries as the Undertaker. Yes, the 4 year hiatus is worse than Undertaker has ever had but he's shown little signs of that ever coming back. Undertakers knees have just gotten worse. His elbows are also going. Shawn can still make a feud interesting. Undertaker can't.
Chris Jericho can pretty much take all the positives I gave HBK. He's perfect right now.
Randy Orton is the future. I can imagine Orton being the Triple H figure when my kids are 10 years old. Alongside Cena. If he goes... they lose a great long time worker.
Edge
He's brilliant. And his ball has just begun rolling only to be recently stopped. And we will now see what his absence will mean. Only when he returns though. We'll realise what we'd been missing. That's thanks to him being a Tag Champ and not World champ at the time of his injury. If he'd have been injured a few months ago then the title picture would have been very different. Hell, you could say that for the past 3 years. WM30 main event and beyond!
But who else can we really mention? Jeff Hardy? Yeah, he's popular but he's not brilliant on the mic or on the mat. The recent news of his contract signing is proof of that. Noone is really bothered. We like the Swanton. We like the facepaint. Hell, we like seeing the belt around his waist. But we can live without it.
Rhodes and DiBiase? I'd miss DiBiase but he's not yet done any match which has made the edge of my seat. Rhodes is poor and I expect to see him as ECW champion this time next year. Insignificant success. Lets just say if I was in a boat and it was far to heavy. Rhodes would go first. I'm more important.
Christian. Talented. Good on the Mic. Not gonna do anything other than ECW/Intercontinental/US title.
Swagger... Same as Dibiase... possible less talented.
Screw the divas. Beautiful women who can slap are ten a penny and I'm sure one of them can do a suplex, DDT or a chick kick. Unharmed.
Big Show, Kane, Mark Henry... ahem.
--------------
In short, it all depends on who died. Those who would be sorely missed in a business sense make up the smaller percentage. Take out Triple H, Cena, Edge, HBK, Orton, and Chris Jericho. Add The McMahons too. That's 10 people who's loss would be immediately apparant. How many in the roster? around 90... I suck at maths so just call it 10 percent
90% of superstars who's loss wouldn't matter so much. Even on a larger scale, There are many future stars down in FCW who could be brought up and I'm sure they'd be able to sign some TNA stars and ROH stars if they needed to. TNA talk about the loyalty but I doubt it's true. Not for the right price.
