What Do You Watch WWE For?

Ok, a lot of people when they answer this will say 'both'....but what is the main reason you watch WWE - is it for the promos or the matches?

If I was given the choice of a 2 hour Raw featuring match after match or promo/backstage interactions....I would go for the latter everytime.

I am a sucker for a good promo or backstage vignettes. I actually admire it more than a good match!!! Dont get me wrong, I can watch some matches again and again (Bret vs Bulldog, Rock vs Austin, Austin vs Triple H) but give me Rock or Punk cutting a promo over Ziggler vs Bryan anyday!!!!

It's hard to say but I think I watch it more for the promos because the way WWE books their matches makes me want to punch myself.
Watching John Cena or Cody Rhodes promos is much more entertaining.

I really watch hoping today will be the day that wrestling finally matters to them. I absolutely hate sports entertainment. I want pro-wrestling.

Wrestling matches. Anybody who watches WWE or any Wrestling company just for promos or backstage interactions shouldn't even be considered a Wrestling fan.

WWE is a Wrestling company and RAW and Smackdown are Wrestling shows not promo shows or a movie. Promos are just a part of Pro-Wrestling which are done to buildup to a Wrestling MATCH.

If i was forced to choose, give me promos/backstage skits etc. That is entertainment. However i dont want to watch heath slater stink up the place like he did at mania. I want promos from greatness like rock/austin/punk etc.

I would get bored to tears if they only showed 2 hours of wrestling mainly because 95% of the current roster cant wrestle. WWE's current style of wrestling is terrible. They slowed everything down, all wrestlers only have a couple moves, its filled with rest holds and just isnt good anymore.

Wrestlemania is supposed to feature the best matches and this year they were all underwhelming. Every wrestler is gassed out after the first minute and first bump. Then they are slow for the rest of the match. Its boring. None of them even tried at wrestlemania.

Firstly I guess above everything the matches. I pay attention to the matches, I don't always pay attention to the promos. A good entertaining promo is just that though: Entertaining.

Deeper than that, why I watch wrestling in the first place? I don't know how to not watch it. I used to get sat down in front of it when I was a baby and not even consciously aware what I was watching to keep me quiet.

Going back to the question though, I think Wrestlemania proved that story isn't too important. The three best matches of the night all didn't have much in the way of storylines. (They did have some great promos leading up to the matches though: Noted). But yeah, The three best matches of Wrestlemania, their whole story was just the match itself for the sake of it being that match, and all of them were great matches. Some of the best in a long time.

This one's a difficult one to consider honestly. My initial response is that I watch it for the promos and vignettes. That's where the entertainment is for me. However, it's the promos and vignettes that get me wanting to watch the matches and without that pay-off there's no point to the vignettes. At least this is the ideal situation. I suppose I could deal with certain vignettes without a match, but I don't really get into a match without some story and context for it.

It also depends on who we're talking about here. With someone like Rey Mysterio, I enjoy his match-work more than I enjoy his vignettes, which are alright but nothing special. When it comes to something like Degeneration-X, the vignettes are always more entertaining (not to mention funnier) than their matches. I feel the same way about Cena, although in Orton's case, he's much more entertaining when he doesn't speak. He's a far better physical performer than a verbal one (which, by the by, is one of the reasons they worked so well together when they were feuding.) The Undertaker and Mick Foley are two wrestlers that I truly couldn't decide which was more entertaining: their promo work or their in-ring performance.

In conclusion, I think I watch more for the vignettes, but if the vignettes are good, then I stay for the matches.

I watch it for the blend of matches & the soap opera factor. What keeps me glued is the development of characters, interesting feuds, underdogs and comedic mic work. It's basically a form of escapism to me and a bit of fun. It's better than a regular soap opera because you can actually connect with it. I've been watching wrestling since the mid 90's, but the Attitude era really got me into it. I'm liking what I see as of now though. I think the current product is the best its been for several years.

So someone who watches wrestling for promos shouldnt be allowed to call themselves a wrestling fan? People watch WWE for many different reasons. I favor the storylines and the promos over the matches but that doesnt mean I dont love a well executed match and it surely doesnt mean I'm any less of a fan than you are. If I wanted to watch mat wrestling I'd watch high school or olympic wrestling. WWE might be considered a wrestling company by definition but theres obviously more to it than just the in ring competition and I dont know what makes you think you have the right to judge how much of a fan someone is or isnt. Fact is I, like many people, multitask while watching wrestling. So what if I dont have the patience or the desire to sit there and analyze every kick and grapple Daniel Bryan does, wrestling has been a main part of my life for many years and I'll be dammed if after watching almost every RAW since I first became aware of the WWE I'm going to be called less of a fan just because you happen to like a certain aspect of the show more than I do. Its just one component. This isnt the 60's, smoke and mirrors are just as important to the product as what goes on in the ring.

I simply watch it for what happens in the ring, actual wrestling matches and display of talent.. Most are all about the entertainment on the mic, but im all about what happens in the ring.. for example.. Brock Lesnar giving a F5 to John Cena actually speaks more volume to me, then if he would have grab a mic and started talking shit to Cena..

I watch the WWE with the hopes that perhaps someday it can be as good as pro-wrestling once was.

If I had to choose wrestling or promos, I'd have wrestling be the only thing I watch. Promos build interest in a match, but these days we have idiots who shall remain nameless who will waste weeks of promos on a horrible match. The idea is that if we sell this match on the basis that the emotion and passion of the promo is genuine and powerful, we can half-ass the actual match and cash our paycheck.

I like a good promo, but someone should have to prove that they're worth having a promo if they can sell well enough in the ring. When I'm dealing with a drawn out john cena blah blah fucking blah fest I'm always wondering "What match would they have shown if cena called in sick?".

I watch the WWE (and TNA for that matter) for the Championships and the Stables. So, in essence, I watch the WWE (and TNA for that matter) for both the matches and the promos. I’ve been watching since 1989 and haven’t stopped since. Yes, most of the time, it’s habitual, and there are really only a handful of memorable moments per year, but just like as sure as Raw in new on Mondays and Smackdown is new on Fridays, I’ll be tuned in. Oh, and having the Divas (and Knockouts for that matter) on TV helps.

I do think there is a huge difference between the wrestling fan and a WWE fan. I grew up on JCP and clearly VKM today is nowhere wher he was with Hogan or the Attitude Era. Some fans say they like all of the promos and backstage stuff byt aren't most of those fans complaining during Russo's time with TNA and the first year with Bischoff as not having enough wrestling. We can debate all day the difference between a wrestling fan and a WWE fan but the name on the marquee is wrestling. I do think the fans that like all of the entertaining stuff VKM placates to them and is the main reason WWE is in a decline. I have always said the shows JCP produced was the perfect module of 50/50 of wrestling and then the promos to enhance the storylines!
