What Classic Films & Franchises Would You Reboot?

Reboots aren't uncommon in the history of movies as some of the most classic films of all time have, throughout the decades, been rebooted or otherwise reimagined. One of my personal favorite remakes, and one that I think is far superior to the original, was the remake of Cape Fear back in the early 90s with Robert De Niro giving a spectacular performance. Over the past year, Les Miserable` scored major box office returns and racked up one prestigious film award after another. We've seen classics from the horror genre like the Friday The 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and A Nightmare on Elm Street rebooted, albeit with very mixed results. Films based on classic comic book characters such as Spider-Man, Batman and Superman have also undergone reboots over the past several years. However, of all the films or great franchises that have come about, are there any that you'd personally like to see be remade?

For me, I'd kinda sorta like to see the Indiana Jones franchise get a reboot. Harrison Ford is great but damn, the man turns 71 on July 13. Realistically, he MIGHT, just MIGHT, have one more Indy film in him. While I very much doubt it could go down this way, I sort of wouldn't mind seeing each of the three original films remade, but with each film being split into its own trilogy in the hopes of each film give off this grand, epic feeling. Of course, the problem with that is finding a way to do it while keeping the films themselves from being packed with filler. It'd also run into a helluva lot of money and a massive commitment from essential cast members.

They Live. Roddy Piper's magnum opus is a cult classic, and has a very intriguing premise. I love the movie as is, but I always felt that the third act fell flat and veered away from the mysterious, contemplative pace and mood set by the first two acts. The ending sequences as well as the actual end of the film, have always left me wanting. The themes are of the movie are very timely, and if the right filmmaker got his or her hands on the material the results could be nothing short of brilliant. An exploration of the themes along with a more modern take on the aliens among us plot would be very welcome. Nothing's ever going to top Roddy's one-liners and the famous back alley fight scene, but from the standpoint of tapping deeper into the ideas the original introduced, a remake could be among the more thought-provoking and entertaining films of modern cinema.

Halloween is the first one that pops in my mind.

I stand by it, and I'll continue to stand by it, but Rob Zombie's 2007 Halloween remake was outstanding. The only part that bothers me is this unnecessary and pointless rape scene in the uncut version, because it adds nothing to the plot or story. Zombie just threw it in there for shock value alone, and that's it. I know Rob Zombie is a sick and twisted freak, but still.

But Zombie's 2009 remake of Halloween 2 was shit. Together, Zombie and Malcolm McDowell destroyed the Dr. Loomis character to the point, where Donald Pleasence is probably spinning in his grave. On top of that, Zombie turned Scout Taylor Compton's Laurie Strode into an unbearable and annoying primary protagonist. And the endings (there are two endings: the theatrical ending, and the uncut DVD/Blu-Ray ending, both are COMPLETELY different)? Ugh. I could go on a five or six paragraph rant about why both endings are so awful, but I'll save that for another time.

From what I remember reading, the studio is still undecided on whether they want to continue Rob Zombie's storyline, or start with something new. And the new Halloween film was dropped from a release schedule sometime last year. I wouldn't continue Zombie's storyline, because it devolved into a mess of shit towards the end. Start with something new, and some tweaking with Michael Myers wouldn't hurt. I know a lot of Halloween fans bitched about Zombie explaining the origins of Myers in 2007, because this approach supposedly killed his mystique as evil incarnate. As long as they don't go the route of some outside force controlling Myers (i.e. the satanic cult bullshit with Dr. Wynn in Halloween 6/The Curse Of Michael Myers), I don't see a problem with some noticeable changes.

Fright Night is already underway, and I adored the 2011 remake. Colin Farrell was superb as a modern day Jerry Dandridge, who's more of a dick than Chris Sarandon's Jerry in the original. They're making a Fright Night 2 as a remake/sequel for the 1988 original sequel. And it'll be interesting to see, if they reintroduce Jerry's sister, Regine, and follow the same storyline of Regine seeking revenge for Charlie murdering Jerry.

As a fan of Blade, I'd like to see that rebooted. It's possible there could be a fourth film now that Wesley Snipes is out of prison but there's a big part of me that believes it won't happen, plus Blade III and the TV series that followed were shit so I'd prefer they start all over again with the series. Two candidates that I believe would be perfect for the role of Blade are Michael Jai White and Idris Elba. I'd prefer Michael Jai but he's no longer mainstream, and Blade is black british in the comics so Idris Elba would probably be the better choice out of the two. As for the villian, I'd love for it to be Morbius but it would make more sense if it's Deacon Frost since he's responsible for turning Blade into a half-vampire. Morbius could come in the second film. He was originally supposed to be the villian in Blade II until they scrapped him for the reaper storyline.

I would like to see Casablanca redone. It will probably suck because the part of Rick was everything Bogart was all about in his roles, but we'll never know unless we see. Plus it was a play first, so it could have potential.

If you're talking just individual films, I'd love to see several from my childhood remade with better effects. Things like The Last Starfighter, Explorers and Batteries Not Included. However, sometimes movies like those are perfect just the way they are and would only be ruined by remakes.

If you're talking series then definitely Indiana Jones. But I wouldn't remake them whatsoever. I actually see Indiana Jones as a strong enough character that a James Bond like series of movies is possible. They could change actors as age sets in just like they did with the others.

If we're on the Marvel titty, wecould do with another, better Punisher film. I don't think Tom Jane is leading man material and the Punisher is so dark and they can do so many crossovers with other Marvel characters, without having to touch on any of the current Avenger-characters.

Remakes? I think enough time has passed to have another go at something like Full Metal Jacket, only in the Middle-East this time. It's topical again, but I don't know who they'd cast.

I thought Star Wars episodes 4 to 6 were also being redone with the current cast? How's that coming along?

Would love a remake of the Mask, especially with the advancement of special effects since the release of the movie. I know there was a bomb of a sequel and the whole magic of the original was due to Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz so this might be a really terrible idea.

Also, the resident evil series should do a reboot and focus on the in game characters instead. The game and movie franchise has gone to shit during the late naughties and they weren't that good to begin with.
