Was Vampiro considered a successful gimmick?

Occasional Pre-Show
To start off I have always loved The Misfits so naturally i would be a little biased when it comes to Vampiro. However, I never really hear that much about him today. what he's been up to, or anything like that. Now i never really watched WCW much but seem to remember somewhat of his program with Sting. I believe this was closer to the end of WCW so knowing this wasnt exactly a great time for WCW, and the knowledge that most crossover music/wrestling storylines are never any good, i am lead to suspect most people werent crazy about vampiro. On the contrary, i never hear anything bad said about the guy either. So I don't know. what are everyone's thought on Vampiro? was he considered a success in WCW? or was this just another piece of WrestleCrap for the dying days of WCW?

His last appearance was at AAA: Guerra De Titanes last December where he won their tag team titles with Joe Lider. He hasn't been seen since. He's never been all that. Just look and weirdness.

Well, Vampiro wasn't a WCW creation. He was HUGE in Mexico throughout the 90's. In America, he wasn't exactly a smash, but he did develop a cult following. There is a fantastic documentary about him, though the title escapes me. I know it's on YouTube.

I enjoy Vampiro and his gimmick, but it really depends what you consider to be successful. He's not exactly a household name. He was a constant mid-carder in WCW for a couple years. I enjoyed his feud with Sting as outlandish as some of it was, it's still better than a lot of what we see now. And he was the inaugural WSX Heavyweight Champion for those of us that fondly remember MTV 2's little experiment.

He's not exactly a top guy in the US, but in Mexico he's probably looked at a lot like Undertaker was here around 04-06.

He hasn't been seen since because he's producing several Mexican programs. Dude is a rock star down there.

Vampiro was greatly misused in WCW. The guy had the look and the ability, but he was hindered by The Misfits and ICP. The Misfits were god awful in WCW....and Vampiro switched right over to ICP almost instantly once the Misfits were gone. Vampiro's program with Sting was terrible as well....as was his brief little "thing" with Hulk Hogan.

Vampiro should have been a headliner in the dying days of WCW, but they never figured out how to properly use him.

i know Jericoh hates Vamp but was Jericoh still a WCW EMPLOYEE WHEN VAMP was a WCW employee also?
i dont think the were...but if they were Chris shouls of swalllowed his pride and did a fued with Vamp because Jericoh or Eddie, benoit or maybe even Chavo could of brought out the Vamp WCW could of marketed as a star

Vampiro was a huge star in Mexico before coming to WCW. He was a successful gimmick in WCW, but not on the level he was in AAA in Mexico. He reminds me of Konnan in that regard... Konnan was a HUGE star in AAA. He had a good run in WCW too but not like his days in Mexico. Vampiro had a good gimmick and a very unusual look that worked for him in WCW. I just think the terrible booking in the end kinda killed his and a lot of other guys momentum. He probably could have been bigger.

I think he was the inspiration for a lot of Jeff Hardy's antics later on...

Vampiro was never that much of a star in the US, which was a shame as I thought he was pretty damn cool in WCW, and would have loved to have seen him come to WWE when they bought WCW in 2001 but it wasn't to be.

However, he was massive in Mexico. In Chris Jericho's first book, Y2J talks about how Vampiro was THE guy in Mexico and kept doing whatever he could to screw Jericho and keep him down, going as far as starting false stories about Jericho supposedly preparing to walk out on the company and demanding to find out weekly how much money Jericho was making. He does sound like a bit of a wanker to be honest.

I did enjoy seeing him in TNA for a very short while, as part of the New Church and have seen him make appearances for XPW several years ago, but I haven't really heard much from him in the last couple of years

To be brutally honest no Vimpiro was not a successful gimmick and was wrestlecrap.

In actuality nobody had a successful gimmick in wcw from about the start of the year 2000 or even earlier onwards to the end.

Once Hollywood Hogan lost his steam and sting became too familiar again that was pretty much it, wcw finished.

Goldberg almost kept it going but almost wasn't enough.

I always enjoyed Vampiro, but I wouldn't call him a success in the US. He was very popular in Mexico, but it didn't seem to translate well up here. I liked his feud with Sting as outlandish as it was. Honestly I don't remember much else of his WCW career so that kind of sums it up for me. I watched wrestling religiously to, and I draw pretty much a blank when it comes to him. He had his cult following, but I wouldn't go as far as to call him a success.
