Was There More To Steve Austin Than Stone Cold?

Pay Per Ghost

What they f*ck happened in the thread section here
This idea spins off from what I've seen of Austin in ECW. His stuff with Stevomania, Monday Niquil, promos after losing to Mikey Whipwreck were oozing with insane humor. A highly recommended collection to say the least.

Now in WWE his character into a badass rebel who just kicked ass but his funny and expressions were kinda overshadowed by the hell raising. I aint puttin' that down, I loved the beer bath, Zamboni run in but was Steve's humor and charisma never properly showcased like The Rock's was?

He did this type of character when he turned heel in 2001. I thought it was great. Comedy would have ruined his image when he was face.

I thought his "gun" when he made Vince piss his pants was hilarious, and remember Stone Cold's idea of "Black tie"? 2001 as HBKperfect23 mentioned Austin had me in hysterics many a time. "What?" is one of the funniest things to ever come out of wrestling. His promos during that era were literally side-splitting, so I don't think there was ever a lack of humour in the Austin character, especially since he was such a bad-ass by gimmick.

There is different kinds of comedy. I felt Stone Cold was very comedic through his entire career. Maybe not the same kind of comedy as Santino or something along those lines but in a more serious sense. Honestly, i found Austin more entertaining than The Rock. The Rock was more catchphrases and making fun of someone. You never knew what Stone Cold was going to do. Rather it was attacking Booker T in a grocery store or singing songs in the back he was always entertaining. I don't think his character was as serious as everyone thinks. Maybe it's just because he had fun while doing it.

The comedy/turn serious when needed Austin from his Co-GM days was fantastic. He always had bit of a comedic tone about him then, and had excellent timing, that I don't think he got deserved credit for. But when he would start stunning people, or bashing the shit out of Kane with a chair, it showed he could still pull off serious.

I have a suggestion, buy the Stone Cold dvd. Awesome content! When he turned heel & joined McMahon he was doing a lot of comedy. Him singing & playing guitar. They showed where he was playing kiss ass to McMahon, repeating everything he said. Making Kurt Angle where a cowboy hat that was too small. He actually was very, very funny!

What you's talking about he only had it when he was heel
He had it all along, in WCW he had some comedy as well as playing the cocky heel
in ECW he was hilarious while still portraying a badass
As the face after he was set in stone he had some comedic moments mixed in with schitzophrenic.

He was first an formost a kick ass machine that you could never trust, but he had that comedic side when he was comfortable with someone (in character), once he turned heel again he became paranoid and thus his character turned to comedy to make up for his apparent fall from grace.

Either way Austin could do it all in terms of playing a range of character types, as could most guys that have been main eventers post 80's, it's almost a requirement. Jericho can do it all, HBK could do it all, Cena "can" do it, Triple H can do it all, Rock certainly could, Edge was an allrounder and the list goes on

Austin was at his best during his short run in ECW. His anger towards Bischoff, Hogan and Co. translated into some of the funniest, and most transparently hateful spoofs in wrestling history. He was able to draw heat in Philly like few ECW talents could.

His Stone Cold gimmick will always be his most memorable, it defined and helped create the Attitude Era. But from ECW, all the way back to the Hollywood Blondes, it was easy to see Steve Austin had a mind for the business, and a willingness to give any character thrown his way one hell of a good go.

Good god almighty, that era of Stone Cold was absolutely amazing, I was in hysterics literally every single time he was on screen. He was hilarious as the McMahon kiss-ass character, and was still funny as hell when he was leading WCW in the Invasion.

Stone Cold has always had a talent for comedy, and while he didnt use it as much during his ass-kicking rise to the top of WWE, he was easily capable of being funny whenever the opportunity came up.

Austin is an awesome performer, always has been and is someone that current WWE superstars need to look at and study, as he was capable of playing a sadistic heel, an ass-kicking fan favourite, a kiss-ass heel, a comedy character and was damm good at every single one.

You could see in WCW that Austin had talent, and in ECW he really showed what he could do with his promos there, while in WWE you saw him bloom into the star he always knew he had the ability to be.

Stone Cold and the Rock both basically came into the business the same way...
Except for this...
Stone Cold worked from Dallas Texas to Tennessee before he got anywhere...even WCW...

The Rock worked a tryout match for Vince and was automatically brought in to survivor series...

Were They both were brought in with stupid gimicks and were not given a chance to talk?
Yes

did they deal with it?
Yes

Did they each show Vince something special from the time they touched a mike...
HELL YES!!!

Did they revolutionize our sport?
Hell YES!!!

Will there be another?
not if Creative has some thing to do with it...

now on to your question yes stone cold was a funny character...yes he was a badass...he was all those things...but they all just weren't able to be showcased with his gimmick at the time...

lol One of my favourite videopackages from the past was when Mcmahon was reaching out to Stone Cold and when he needed him to fend off the WCW Invasion.
"Austin I don't need a Stone Cold that gives me hugs.... I NEED THE OLLLLLLLLLD STONE COLDDD. lol Classic. Singing on the guitar with Kurt Angle and his little hat some of the funniest stuff ever in the WWE.

I think this is an excellent topic about Steve Austin being more than "Stone Cold." In ECW he did show a lot of depth. And "Superstar" Steve Austin was intense and funny. Austin was a very talented performer and much like Mick Foley, I think he could have been a success in a character that wasn't "Stone Cold." Not that there was anything wrong that gimmick. It did turn out to be kind of successful lol.
