Ty or Sly....

The Dewbliners

WZ's Whedonite. Now 20% Cooler
I'm having some tech problems with my laptop. For some reason, it crashed earlier, and now I can only run in safe mode. If one of you guys could help me with this, I'd greatly appreciate it...

It's most likely a driver Dewey :) a graphical or Chipset driver at best, you should try and update it on the manufacturer's site through safe mode :)

Edit: It makes a blue screen of death right?

I did get the blue screen, then it told me to restart, and when I did, it started running a scan, and told me to start in safe mode. You said go to the manufacturers website and update the drivers? So, I'd go to Toshiba's page?

My idea was to use my warrantee, after tossing it out of a moving vehicle.....

Oh yeah, and hope Ty can help with your computer, yo.

It'll go to the user login, and not just say, "Please Wait" for 15 minutes, then nothing. Basically, I can't sign in Normal Mode.

Guess it's not the blue-screen of death then if you get to the user login.

But yeah updating your driver is done from your manufacturers homepage (guessing it's a Toshiba you have?) then under support you can search for your model, which you will be able to see the full model-name under your laptop (if you tip it a bit you should be able to look under the bottom)

Hope it helps, any else if it's not a driver, I'm a little lost right now, could be an error with your Operative System though, but for now, I'm counting on the driver.

Would it help if I disclosed that right before the crash, something called "Vista Security" started popping up on my Task bar, and said I was under attack? That's the first time I've seen that message.

First thought - virus.

I don't know though, don't want to freak you out before the other things are tried although, but while you are in safe mode, you should probably run a scan of your system if you want to leave out the virus possibility.

Yes what the suggested is true, you got infected Dewey. Go to malwarebytes.org and download their free malware removal program. That should clean that up from your PC and you should be able to get back into it like normal.

Microsoft's page has a good program too, forgot the name though, so it's really of no use I guess, but I know from personal experience (never used it on my own, but seen it in action) that Malwarebytes removal tool does absolute wonders for your infected system.

Thanks, guys, I shall do as you all say. Unfortunately, my antivirus expired a few weeks ago, and I don't have the money to renew, though.

Edit: Ty, is it called StartupLite?

Vista Security is a definite malware attack. Anything that pops up as "You're under attack!" that isn't from your current anti-virus or malware program is a sign of compromised security. Run that malware, yo.

After you run Malwarebytes and get your system back up to normal Dewey, search for Microsoft Security Essentials. Probably the best free anti virus out there in my opinion, it's what I use at home and work.

Ty, I downloaded the Anti-Malware program you linked me to, and ran a quick Scan, as well of a scan of my disk, still no luck. Any other ideas? This isn't be doubting, it's just not working on my problem.....

The quick scan found three viruses, and the disk found about thirty.

I put them all in quarantine, then my dumbass roommate deleted them all, before I could call my buddy to get further instruction.

Becker, best thing to do is google Microsoft Security Essentials for an anti virus, works very well.

Dewey, well really dude I can only do so much from here, have you tried running a system restore at all?

I haven't tried that yet, so I guess I'll try that. Thanks again, man.

You're kidding right? I have an entire thread of free programs in the Technology forum, including a link to AVG, a free and wonderful anti-virus program, and you're paying for anti-virus software AND you're complaining you can't pay more?

Seriously?

Oh and Malwarebytes is in my list as well.

My AVG doesn't work anymore.. You should hook me up with that link...
Actually, AVG DOES still work, you just probably have to update to Version 9. I run it on every Windows machine I own, which includes no less than 6 separate computers, and I install it on every Windows machine I set up, which includes no less than 15 other computers.

You probably just have to update.
