ThoughtWorthy ~ John Morrison {WWE}

ShinChan

Gone. For. Good.
Inspired by Dave's series of "Make a case" threads, I'm going to start a series "ThoughtWorthy". In each thread, I will discuss about a particular wrestler and his past stint in a particular wrestling promotion.

Let's start.

John Morrison {WWE}

It's been almost 5.5 years since Morrison departed from WWE. He worked in WWE for almost 10 years as Johnny Nitro initially and then John Morrison.

He had accomplished significant accolades like ECW World Championship, InterContinental Championship and multiple Tag Team Championships. But he never won the ultimate title.

I used to love him a lot. Even while he was a heel. Of course, I never liked him using heel tactics and wondered why he would need them. Actually, Kayfabe was reality for me for a pretty long time.

I don't remember his mic work. Neither was I capable of judging who's better on mic or even a wrestler needs mic skills as well. So, I don't know how he was at mic.

But he was damn entertaining in the ring for me. I used to love hia flashy moveset. Still remember the cool moves like Corkscrew Springboard Roundhouse Kick (Flying Chuck), Corkscrew Neckbreaker (Moonlight Drive) & of course Corkscrew Split-legged moonsault (Starship Pain). I think that few would also remember the spot he executed at Royal Rumble. Nowadays, Kofi Kingston does these.

As his accomplishments show, he was never a World Champion and I would've loved him to get a World Title run. Also instead of Miz, I thought that he should've gotten it first. I think that he was solid upper midcarder and should've been used in the main event scene.

Question: Your thoughts about John Morrison's stint in WWE?

I liked MNM, and I liked him when he first went to Raw, with Melina as his manager. Once they split, he wasn't the same IMO. I never got into his ECW title run under the John Morrison name or his tag team with Miz. I liked the Nitro gimmick with Melina much better, character wise. Think they should've kept that together and pushed him harder. He should've had a long IC title run, and then gave him some main event, title match feuds. He was good in the ring, and he and Melina had great chemistry. She was a great manager that added to his character in my opinion. That star quality was there when they were paired up.

WWE really moved away from managers and it's not a good thing at all.

I haven't watched a whole lot of Morrison but did enjoy his work with Miz in MNM. I've seen people say he didn't have the charisma but I kind of liked his character. Pretty good in the ring even though his Starship Pain is one of the weakest finishers I can recall. I'm not sure I ever saw him hit it with much impact, it looked even worse than CM Punk's flying elbowsmash.
I'm having a hard time thinking of him as an old school wrestler, I guess time really flies.

MNM was a different team than Miz and Morrison. MNM was when he was paired with Joey Mercury, with Melina as the manager.

Can sum it up in this clip

Miz was breaking star and Shawn and Morrison was Marty. John wasnt as nearly entertaining or had better skills if you dont count that moonsaults he did. Add to that Melina and rumors she was giving a turn to everybody who asked and rumors that he was really unprofessional at the time and you can see why his career didnt really go nowhere except midcard. Comparison to Kofi is in order. Both were midcard champions who were "spot monkeys". If he stayed he would be probably intercontinental or US or tag champ few times. But cant see him going big.

He was a great mid-card hand, one of the best ones they had at that time, but that was pretty much his ceiling in my opinion. I never saw him as World Championship material. His offense was innovative and he had a great character in John Morrison, I just don't think he had enough of the full package to make it as a top level star. He was great foil for heels like the Miz and R-Truth and he was at his best when he had somebody to work off of, but on his own, I just thought he lacked the mic skills and charisma necessary to make people really care about him for more than a couple of months.

And, as mentioned, his Starship Pain was probably my least favorite finisher in history, and I'm not overstating that. He hit it clean maybe 5% of the time. Half the time he'd miss altogether. As I said, Morrison was a good hand, but I don't think he was good enough to be a World Champion.

Very talented guy, everyone thought he'd be the breakout of his tagteam with Miz and then he fucked everything up with the Trish Stratus/Wrestlemania nonsense. He's basically a better version of Seth Rollins.

You're right about Starship Pain. Few times it would be executed the right way. Most of times, his head used to hit his opponent's torso instead of his own torso.

I couldn't think where to post this thread. I know that John Morrison ain't an old school wrestler but there was no other suitable sub forum to post about it.

You'd know better where to post than I. Don't mind me, I'm just a fuddy-duddy stuck in the past; it still seems weird to me seeing attitude-era stuff on an old school board. It doesn't seem that long ago!

Time really flies.

I had to search when did John Morrison actually leave WWE. I Thought that it might be around the end of 2013. But when I searched, then I got to know that it's been long 5.5 years since he last appeared in WWE. I was shocked that it had been so long.

About the thread, I'm happy to know that I ain't the only one to love him. Probably my age had a part in it but I always loved the flashy stuff he did. Even more than Miz who is admittedly a much better heel.

John Morrison had a great run in the WWE. I wish it could have been even better, personally. I said it years ago and my opinion has not changed on the matter. He was the better one of the two in his team with The Miz and therefore should have gotten the better push when they split. Despite Miz getting the bigger push I'm still surprised Morrison never made it to at least the big gold World Heavyweight Championship. He was there during the time of there still being two World Championships after all. We can blame Melina and all the rumored drama for that. Oh well. Even though he never got to the very top of the card I was a big fan of the guy enjoying his time in MNM, the Intercontinental Championship run as Johnny Nitro, his ECW run where he first became Morrison, the tag team with Miz, and his return to singles action afterwards. His matches were fun to watch and it was a good run that could have been even better.
