The WWE Either Has Created Or Is In The Process of Creating An NXT Championship

There's always talk on these forums about WWE creating new championships or bringing back older championships or merging championships or whatever. According to a post from Jim Ross on Twitter earlier today, a new title looks to be making its way to WWE in the near future.

According to Jim Ross, the WWE will initiate the start of the NXT Championship tournament at the tapings tonight at Full Sail University. I haven't read any details yet on what the title might look like or anything along those lines, only that a tournament to crown a champion will begin at tonight's tapings.

Personally, I think this is a good idea as it gives the wrestlers on the NXT roster something to strive for aside from earning their way to the Raw or SmackDown! rosters. Not that earning a spot on the main roster isn't great incentive, but I think this gives a little more general stability to things. This is supposed to be a roster full of young, hungry guys looking to prove themselves, so having a title and being viewed as the top dog on NXT brings bragging rights with it just like any other champion.

I think it's a good idea and something ive been waiting for since NXT went towards being a brand rather then a competition. Like you said it gives the young guys something to strive for and as long as the wrestling and storylines are solid then there should be at least some amount of prestige to the title.

It's also a good way of distinguishing who the more capable members of the NXT roster are and puts the spotlight on some of the wrestlers who may end up making the step up to Raw or Smackdown. I know ratings for NXT aren't exactly through the roof but to be able to reference that the new member of the smackdown roster was a dominant NXT champion for the months previous is a good way of building him up in the eyes of the new fans. Being able to see how the NXT guys handle being the top dog and being a champion can't hurt either.

Im all in favor of it and look forward to the show gaining a bit more structure as a result. I would also be in favor of some tag team belts but i can't see that happening to be honest.

I think it's a good idea for every reason you said Jack.

It adds some more relevancy to the show, no longer are they simply people competing in random matches but are now people competing in random matches in-order to impress and gain contention for a Championship. I've not been overly impressed by NXT as of yet, feel they need to give more time to certain matches instead of attempting to stick as many faces as possible into the show. But some performers have impressed me, and I feel this could be a stepping stone onto the main roster.

That taping will be fun for the audience there. Tournament through the show and apparently a dark match main event of Cody Rhodes vs Kane, who as far as I know have never wrested one-on-one before.

This is a fabulous idea! Now that NXT is a wrestling show and not a reality-esque competition, it makes sense to have the guys on the show battle for something. With all the really good young guys they have, I think we'll see some really good matches. Looking forward to it.

this is an amazing idea. I love watching NXT every week and now that championship will made it gives everyone a goal to reach. Most likely a current roster wrestler will hold the title in order to put someone over in the future? I hoe someone like Mcgillcuty holds it

I just love the show! As long as they keep referencing that NXT is the next step to Raw&Smackdown they can make this a really credible show.

An NXT champion would be brilliant, and keeping some SUPERSTARS level guys popping in and out of it for a tiny bit of star power as they are doing is just the right ammount they need.
NXT being a higher quality, telivised version of FCW is absolutely the right track and I really enjoy watching each episode. Bray Wyatt for the win!

Very good idea, and one that I've been hoping for for a while, especially so since the attention is being diverted away from FCW somewhat now.

For it to properly work, I believe the title should have some kind of special stipulation whereby if one successfully defends the belt x amount of times, they are granted a promotion to the main roster.

Yeah ^^ they could even work it like the Xdiv title... A choice of trading it in at a certain time... Say as an entrant into the rumble or a Mitb match and to be put on the roster! Could be a very good way of switching things up and giving big pushes.

A push being the best aspect of this belt. Been watching NXT since the start of Regaltime and its been pure gold, but the matches outside of rivalries were often empty as there was little to strive for but a chance at moving up to say a brodus clay squash match. Great idea!!

I can definitely get behind this idea. NXT needs something to keep it from becoming a bland showcase for lower card wrestlers, like Superstars. A championship will offer the NXT roster something to chase after, along with adding some legitimacy to the brand. Furthermore, winning the NXT Championship -- becoming the top guy on the brand -- can serve as a way to move on to bigger and better things. An NXT Champion could very well be on par with the United States or Intercontinental Champion, immediately allowing for a seamless jump into the midcard of one of the two main shows (Raw or Smackdown).

This is the type of thing that could solidify a push for someone like Seth Rollins, Antonio Cesaro, Tyson Kidd and so on, especially if it was defended on a weekly basis. I don't want this championship to become like all the others, it needs to be defended regularly -- like a Television Championship, of sorts. That way, the title can gain some credibility, while the champion racks up title defenses, looking stronger every week. Finally, just on a purely visual basis, having gold around their waist will do wonders for the young up-and-comers on the roster. A championship, no matter how new, will always be an achievement in the fans' eyes.

I like the idea, as long as they make it a TV title and it doesn't turn into another belt being defended on Raw, SD and PPV. I'd also go with the idea that once a year, Night of Champions, the NXT champ can trade it in for a spot on Raw or SD, and a shot at the IC or US title at the PPV.

it would be the best thing to do by bringing in a NXT Championship because after the first season it has got boring so they need something to spice it up and for the competitors to actually fight for instead of meaningless matches week after week.

Great idea, it'll be nice to have something that they're all working towards while they're there instead of them all just trying to GTFO and make their way to the big show. Plus I think it could add some spice to the show and make it a little more watchable, I know it shouldnt but I think just the addition of this title will get more people watching who don't normally tune in, atleast in the beginning out of curiosity. Hopefully after that they'll develop an interest and in the end NXT will have a title picture and some new fans, shit maybe I'll even watch a few.

I also love the idea of a NXT title. And a recent post on WrestleZone has stated that the belt has a yellow/gold "X" in the center of it (since you stated you didn't know anything about the design). I have greatly enjoyed the new brand-show NXT, and I feel that one title is all they are missing. Sure feuds can develop but why are these guys wrestling each other. For example, last episode, Camacho faced off against Tyson Kidd and although I really enjoyed this match, Camacho's finisher an exception, what is the purpose of them fighting? Sure to "look impressive" for Raw and Smackdown! but we know that a win in this match doesn't guarantee a spot on either show (despite Kidd appearing on WWE TV as of late, you get my point). Now we know that winning a match will get you in the title picture just like anything else on WWE TV.

I also agree that this title should be like a TV title and only defended on NXT with perhaps a few PPV exceptions. Sure the champion can compete on a Raw or Smackdown but just not for the belt. Seems pointless to add the title to an NXT-type show only for it to be defended, well, not on the show. I like the idea of the whole "Option C" cash-in; however, I don't see this as something that is necessary. And although this question wasn't proposed and I'm too lazy to make my own thread, I believe that Bray Wyatt would make a good first NXT titleholder.

I'm gonna say this is one of the best ideas WWE has had in a while, maybe not one of the best but its up there. I've seen a few episodes and I really enjoy what they are doing with it. Not only will this title give the wrestlers something to work towards it will give the fans more reason to invest their time into them. I like this idea so much that I would rather have NXT then this new Main Event show that is coming out. What better way to get these young guys noticed then to have their own Title and their own nationaly televised show. LOVE this new Title.

I like the idea of a NXT championship, what I want to point out is according to reports its a belt with a "BIG YELLOW X IN THE MIDDLE" ok so a yellow X for the NXT championship, now I hate to say it but it just seems like a rip of the X Division title with the big red X by the sounds of it. I like the concept but if the design is similar to TNA's X division title I am going to be sadly disappointed in WWE's chance to do something breakout and unique

I think they need to move all the main roster guys away from NXT, like Kidd, McGillicutty, and everyone else who has already been appearing on RAW, SmackDown, and Superstars. It seems like a step down for them to go after the NXT title. Those guys are already signed to RAW or SmackDown, so they don't have any real incentive to go after the belt.

NXT has been pushed for a few years now and the WWE seems to really be behind it, so they might as well throw out a shiny new belt and crown someone.

It gives NxT wrestlers another purpose, rather than just being another NxT where feuds are made but go nowhere. They can build wrestlers around a title and if they are to be promoted to the main show, the feud can continue straight away too. So in all it is a good idea

The title itself is said to have been brought out by Dusty Rhodes at last night's tapings. There wasn't a detailed description, but the reports I've read have been positive on it's appearance and that a large X is on the center plate.

There are already some doctored pics floating aorund on the internet of the last ECW Championship with the ECW letters replaced with NXT. I even saw a doctored pic of the current WWE Championship with the NXT letters in the center replacing the large WWE logo, so don't buy into those as being legit if you run across them or hear various complaints being made.

The results of the first three weeks of the tournament that were taped last night are now available on the main page.

I like this idea too. It gives more relevance to the program by adding some skin to the game. I'd like to see wrestlers like A-Ri and Justin Gabriel competing in this division too.

I can't believe this is happening. NXT does NOT need a championship! First of all, they have enough titles as it is. Adding a new one just adds to the lack of prestige problem. Secondly, they do not need to turn NXT into a third brand. I seem to remember a little mistake called ECW. Do we really want to sit through that again? It would make more sense to defend the developmental titles on the show, or perhaps the tag team and midcard titles since neither gets the exposure they deserve. Finally, the whole point of NXT was to get you onto the main roster, THAT should be the main prize as opposed to an actual title that in the end will be even less valuable than any of the current titles already in use. I'm rather disappointed by this news and was hoping it would never happen.

I completely disagree. Giving NXT a championship and gearing it towards up-and-comers is what is keeping it from becoming another ECW. That championship is going to be their pathway to the main roster, in theory. I highly doubt we'll see it defended on PPVs or Raw/Smackdown, anyway. If you think about potential champions (guys who are on NXT), most of them are either fresh out of FCW or floundering on one of the main two shows. Wrestling on NXT won't help them change that -- especially since some of them have already been doing that on the OLD NXT. Winning the NXT Championship, on the other hand, will actually give them some momentum. That way, they won't just be blending in with all the other lower card talent, they'll be fighting for a championship, proving their superiority and readiness for one of the main two shows.

You're looking at this championship too much like it'll be something along the lines of the Cruiserweight Championship, or any number of random lower card championships, as that's probably not the direction they'll take it in. This championship won't take away from any of the other titles, as it'll be an NXT exclusive thing. Furthermore, there's no need to start bringing FCW Championships up to NXT -- leave those down in developmental. NXT is a step up from FCW, for guys who have had success down there or have shown some level of readiness for the main roster; guys holding the FCW championships may not be quite ready for that step up.

To OP.

Actually a top dawg title for Nxt would be a great idea. If not a title belt, a title by name. In the lines of king or duke. Something small enough, but just enough it makes them fight for it.
