The two greatest games ever, in my opinion, battle for supremecy in this matchup.

To me a game that is pivotal in a series should be judged on the game that came before it.

Before A Link to the Past there was Zelda 2: The adventure of Link. WIldly regarded as the worst canon Zelda game it was a weird mix of 2D platforming and adventure. It brought in some elements that ALTTP used. Alas though there was nothing too fancy.

A Link to the Past took the few good points of this game, mixed it with the overworld map of Zelda and gave us some great things. Making their first appearance there's the famous Kakariko Village, there's cuccoos, the hookshot, the master sword, the triforce became a physical manifestation, a flute which looks like an Ocarina (Links awakening was the first with an Ocarina and the whistle was used in Zelda I and II), the great fairy...need I go on? Add to that visuals that are not dated some 20 years on, with a massive world map and two versions of said world.

What did OOT have before it? A Link to the Past. The game that saved the franchise.

OOT beat the game visually at the time, but until the 3DS re-release it was looking rather dated. Aside from that there's not much else thrown on the table for new gameplay aside from Epona. The young Link/Adult Link makes use of the two worlds which we saw in ALTTP (Light and Dark).

Don't let nostalgia rule you. A Link to the Past brought more to the series and adventure games than OOT ever could think of. Plus it's more fun.

This one is hard due to these being 2 of my 3 favorite games in the series.

OoT: This one is my favorite Zelda game and I would play this for hours on the N64 and with it's recent release on the 3DS my love for this game has been rekindled and I still find my self playing it for hours at a time.

ALttP: I enjoyed this game a lot on the SNES and would play it a lot but it didn't catch me as much as Oot did. I know that a lot of people love ALttP and will vote for it my vote is going for OoT.

That being said while I will disappointed if OoT loses I will not be angry at all.

Two of my fave games of all time, but it's no contest, A Link to the Past is the single game that got me into gaming. If these two games were to be made at the same time, with the same technologies, it would easily be greater than Ocarina of Time even dreamed of being.

This. Choice. Pains. Me.

I'm going to have to say Ocarina because it's the only game to ever make me pull 3 consecutive sick days from school. Awesome stuff, so glad it came out in the winter.

I've yet to even finish A Link to the Past, I've got it for the GBA, must dig it out before I vote.

Oh my, what a decision. This is coming from a completely unbiased source considering neither of these games are my favorite game in the series. WInd Waker takes that cake. Seriously though, both of these games are nothing short of amazing, and have very few flaws which could push me to vote for one or another. OOT is what everybody says it is. In it's time, it was the best game you could buy and it still is. It took what ALTTP laid down, and made it better. The difference is, it needed what ALTTP presented to make it the game what it was. LTTP saved the series and without it, we wouldn't have the classics that came after it. OOT is great, but LTTP is legendary, and paved the way for OOT.

I voted for Ocarnia of time , no clue how the oldschool 2D one is winning right now

Ocarnia is something I will never forget

The 2D one, I do remember playing and it just didn't have the impact that Ocarnia did , guess you majority of voters are just a few years older than me or something

I don't know how Ocarina of Time is even close in all honesty, while it's a great game, and one of my all time faves. Like Lee said, it doesn't really bring a whole lot new to the table, my first gaming memories is from A Link to the Past, it was far and away better than everything else out on the system at the time, Had a massive world to explore, multiple layers of the world. Ocarina of Time is great, but it didn't have the impact on gaming, or the franchise that A Link to the Past had, because without it... there is no possible way that Ocarina of Time, or any Zelda game after it exists.

-ok, wow, tough one here props on this one completely.

-ALTTP was an all right game though it was rather annoying and i gave up playing it cause i found it difficult and was a rather annoying game. however it was a good game and i appreciate the fact that it is one of several games that made the LOZ series popular.

-OOT, it has to be the most popular game in the LOZ franchise. it was the first 3-D game to exist. it has good graphics (for its time), amazing gameplay, one of the hardest yet easiest temples of all time (the shadow temple, i beat it once and i just could do it again for some reason, think i blinked and finished it the first time lol). uhm i heard from people whho bought the new nintendo 3-DS (or whatever its called), that OOT was the reason they bought it (which backs up on this game being very popular).

-tough call on this one, as both games are very good, but my vote must go to LOZ OOT of course.

If you ask a group of say...100 gamers which Super Mario game is the crown jewel of the series, you're going to hear Super Mario Bros 3 come up the most. It's routinely placed at the top of not just Nintendo all time lists but pretty much all gaming lists in general when applicable. Obviously hard to pick a favorite out of such a storied franchise right? It still wins in the end though because of what it did for not just the series itself but gaming as a whole. That exact reason is why you should vote Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't rank Ocarina of Time as an all time great. It's got the story, the history, the gameplay, the characters and did what many games failed to do at the time; make a succesful leap into the third dimension. All understatements regarding a true masterpiece of a video game, the likes of which are still rarely duplicated. When you look at that A Link to the Past did and the legacy it's left...Ocarina of Time looks much less impressive.

This statement is regards to not just games from the 16-bit era but of all gaming: There are very few games that have the level of addictive playability that A Link to the Past has. When has there really been such a labyrinth of a game whose controls and overall gameplay where simple enough to allow for immediate addiction? No convoluted extra buttons, no unecessary actions were need here. ''Pick up and play'' is the term I would use here. You don't have to go out of your way to find enemies weak spots, there's no step by step process required for you to start slashing away at the baddies. For a game that has as deep a storyline and adventure, it really sticks to an easily playable format. Ocarina of Time wasn't a difficult game to pick up and have fun right away with, but it took more adapting to than LTTP did.

The best way I can put all this is that the leap that the series made from Zelda: The Adventure of Link to Link to the Past is in so many way more impressive than the leap made from the 16 bit game to the 64. Like Lee said, LTTP had to rebound what is often called the black sheep of the Zelda franchise where OOT was released with a good taste already being left in fans mouths from LTTP. There was not a single game up to this point (and personally the only game from the era that matches it here is Super Metroid) that looked, felt, sounded and played so damn well. Not a single game from the era has the look and play of LTTP; OOT had Mario 64 as a predecessor and the gap between the look and play of those two games wasn't a huge gap.

I could go on and on here, but the fact remains that Link to the Past changed what a game can be much in the same way the first one did just to a much higher degree. Ocarina of Time had the groundwork laid out for it with Link to the Past. Not in any way am I saying that OOT isn't an influential, groundbreaking game because it truly is in everyway. What I am saying though is Link to the Past did it first and very arguably did it better at a time when there was no games to influence it. Vote Link to the Past.

I actually didn't like OOT, not sure why as everyone else seemed to love it. So, this oe is a very easy choice for me. LTTP was such an awesome game. Surprisingly non-linear, sidequests galore, challenging yet not frustrating puzzles, great gameplay, intriguing story, just a great great game and all on the SNES.

I'm surprised that LttP is winning. It's an amazing game, but Ocarina of time defined an era in a way that LttP didn't quite do. From the SNES/Megadrive era, I always preferred Super Mario World and, to an extent, Donkey Kong Country 2. But I cannot think of a single game from its generation that is better than Ocarina of Time. And that generation is, in my opinion, the greatest ever because of what it did for gaming.

Ocarina of time had the better dungeons, the better sidequests, and the better moments. I love any moments that make me feel, and that's what OoT have. LttP is fun and everything, but taking the sword out of the stone? Seeing the wasteland that Hyrule has become? Realising you left Saria behind? There is nothing like that in LttP. It's a shame when people vote for a game that's older in the series, even if it's not better, just because it's the game they grew up with or whatever. Mario Galaxy 2 is better than Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time is better than Link to the Past.

LttP may be considered one of the best of all time, but Ocarina is the best of all time.

Prey do tell what DID it do for gaming?

Ocarina of time had the better dungeons,

No it didn't

the better sidequests,

I'll give you that.

and the better moments.

Like what?

taking the sword out of the stone?

Ah yes, what game is that taken from ith updated graphics?

Oh yeah.

Seeing the wasteland that Hyrule has become?

Say which game did that as well?

It's a shame when people vote for a game that's older in the series, even if it's not better, just because it's the game they grew up with or whatever. Mario Galaxy 2 is better than Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time is better than Link to the Past.

Galaxy is better than SM64, but LTTP is better than OOT.

LttP may be considered one of the best of all time, but Ocarina is the best of all time.

No it isn't. Your two arguments that are justified in here are: It has better sidequests and Sarai's in it. Fucking hell.

I'm going to try to head up the argument now for WHY I voted for Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's blind love for graphics but I LOVE Zelda Ocarina of Time. From the moment you first step into Kakariko Village and get the grand tour in cinematic 3D, to the moment you step up to Ganon's castle and unfurl the rainbow bridge, Zelda: OoT just wow'd me...and millions of others.

The N64, a console not known for having many *great* games had a few STAR titles. Goldeneye, Super Mario 64 and Zelda, all within the first year of the consoles life stole the show entirely and turned the console from an underwhelming failure to an overwhelming success. Is it any wonder why this game has been re-released now on two other formats? (GCN, 3DS and N64)

The game redefined 3D. It took what we knew about gaming and allowed us to enjoy it in full 3D even if at the time, polygon based 3D was the way to go. This game HELPED to technologically enhance many other titles and STILL to this date, games are being made with the vision of being a "zelda beater", OoT being the current benchmark.

A link to the past was a solid game. Absolutely brilliant in many aspects, but something was missing from it. I can't explain it but it always lacked something. Perhaps the music was not on point. Perhaps I felt like I couldn't relate to the characters as much - but what I do remember from OoT is this; The moment I saw Zelda being kidnapped inside the polygon diamond of doom...I wanted to cry. It upset me seeing the fair maiden taken away at this point in the game and this game made me realize what involvement TRULY is.

This game really brings out the best of just about everything. The music is brilliant, the score actually legendary in a lot of ways. The bosses are SO brilliant that the first time you face them you ACTUALLY feel like the bosses are epic. In my mind, the bosses from OoT actually...are what started the ICO and Shadow of the Collosus trend...the huge monsters that seem unbeatable but they have one weakness that is exploitable.

The dungeons...well what can I say about these? Brilliant from top to toe. The forest temple is my favourite. Incredibly eerie but yet...just brilliant and the boss of this temple is by far my favourite boss in any game. Shadow Ganon just makes me smile every time I face him...and that's been a LOT of times.

Now...here are the facts;
Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the greatest games, reaching high review scores of 97% pretty much across the board.
It has also had renditions on almost all of the major Nintendo Consoles now since it's release.
It had a more difficult version of it created just to cater to the hardcore fans of the series who adored the first version so much.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time is my pick to win this tournament and it should be yours too. A Link to the Past is great but make no mistake about it; Ocarina of Time is a stronger title. From dungeon to overworld to boss design to sidequest. The game is superior and should be treated like a winner right now.

Great post on OOT there, infact I even repped you. Though why is it better than A Link To The Past? Not why is OOT so good, why is it BETTER than a Link to the past? Not many arguments are raised but we'll have a look shall we:

This game HELPED to technologically enhance many other titles

The game engine was from SM64 though, it was that game that took the 3D world by storm

A link to the past was a solid game. Absolutely brilliant in many aspects, but something was missing from it. I can't explain it but it always lacked something. Perhaps the music was not on point.

The music was the best available with a 16 bit midi track at the time. So no it wasn't that.

Perhaps I felt like I couldn't relate to the characters as much

Ther characterisation is exactly the same as it is in OOT so really no.
