The Greatest Wrestlemania main event!

Savion83

Pre-Show Stalwart
Through out all of the wrestlemania's from the past twenty-six years, which wrestlemania main event was the greatest of all time?

Me personally, I would have to go with wrestlemania 19 main event with Brock Lesner challeged Kurt Angle for the WWE championship.

They both did what they both said they would do prior to wrestlemania 19 on Smackdown in the same week. Raise the bar for the generation after them to lead generation wrestlemania main eventer's to top them push come to shove.

How can we forget that "grade F" shooting star press Lesner did in the closing in the match! And how many F-5's did Kurt Angle kick out of?

But in your opinion, what was the grestest wrestlemania main event?

The Rock vs Stone Cold from Wrestlemania X-Seven. It was an epic match, no disqualification anything goes. Just brilliant. When Vince came out and helped Stone Cold screw The Rock out of the belt was shocking. Both men hit their finishers and took each other to the brink, and there were a number of near-falls. In the end it was Stone Cold who won after beating the hell out of The Rock with a chair. That might even be my favorite of all time.

Though there were many other great Wrestlemania main events, I still stand by Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 6 as the best of the best.

So many good/exciting things happened in the build-up to and during that match. For as long as I had been watching WWF, never did the two top babyfaces in the company face each other on such a grand stage. The crowd was legitimately split right down the middle, owning up to just how over both guys were at the time. Hogan was still essentially in his prime. Warrior had amassed such a huge following in a relatively short amount of time. Neither of them were the best technical wrestlers ever, but it truly didn't matter. They both had that "can't lose" aura of invincibility around them.

Added to which, I had also never bore witness to a champion vs. champion, title for title match before. This stipulation added an entirely different dynamic to an already stellar main event match. What would happen, regardless of who won? Would the winner carry and defend both belts simultaneously? Bear in mind that "title tournaments" were also few and far between, so that possibility never sprung into my young mind.

Even going back 20 years to that event, one can still appreciate just how special it was. The match was incredibly coreographed and very back and forth through most of it. Hogan hulking up and NOT getting the 1-2-3 was unheard of at the time. Likewise, Hogan getting pinned clean at the end was also something that NEVER happened. I was a huge Warrior fan at the time, and I even thought he was going to lose. The aftermath of the whole thing was equally intriguing. What was Hogan going to do now that he lost, and was beaten fair and square? The ending, including Gorilla's comment that Hogan had taken one giant step towards immortality, sealed the deal for this match being one of the greatest.

Though that match managed to successfully answer so many questions, it also forced the viewer to wonder what would happen in a rematch, which would've resulted in yet another dream bout at the following years Wrestlemania. Unfortunately, the question wasn't answered until 8 years later in WCW... in one of the most horrificly bad matches that has ever graced a major promotion, on PPV no less.

Still, Hogan vs. Warrior in 1990 was such a well done program from top to bottom that if it's not acknowledged as THE best main event match to take place at a Wrestlemania, I imagine it would at least be in most long-time fans top 3.

I gotta go with Edge vs. Undertaker for the WHC at WM24. Mainly because I was there while I was on vacation in Orlando, but it was a really good match and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I had great seats for it, and it was not only a good main event, but I think it was a damn good Wrestlemania.

Its a tie between this year's ME with HBK vs Taker and X7's with Austin vs The Rock.

The Rock-Austin match was great not because Austin and Rock were great wrestlers, cus they weren't they were decent at best but because they were AMAZING storytellers. That match was just a huge rollercoaster full of emotion and passion. You could tell that Austin had changed his style to being more of a heel. The ending was also great. Probably the best twist to a match since Bash at The Beach 96 when Hogan turned heel.

HBK vs Taker at this years Wrestlemania was done very excellent and i'm glad they decided for it to be the ME. I believe i'm the only one who enjoyed this match more then the one they had at WM 25 cus the stakes were higher this match. I was hoping HBK would win cus he's always been one of my fav's and it was tearjerker when he lost but at least he went out with a bang.

I'd go with the more recent WM 25 main event HBK vs The Undertaker. This was the first time Mr.Wrestlemania faced the man who was 16-0 at wrestlemania at the grandest stage of them all.

I think Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker are two of the biggest stars of the last decade and seeing them go at it was amazing. The build-up was amazing and the match itself was spectacular. The match had almost everything a fan could want, back and forth action, 2.9 pinfalls, Undertakers dive over the top ropes. When HBK kicked out of the tombestone I wasn't as suprised as when the Undertaker kicked out of the sweet chin music late on in the match, I really thought the streak had ended, which is a thing you don't say a lot. I will remember this match clearly for a long, long time. I stayed up till 4 am just to see this match, and that's why it's the best wrestlemania main event for me.

Tough question so I will bring it down to my top 3:

Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels - WM12
HHH vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit - WM20
Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker - WM26

With that said my favorite (and what would probably get my vote as the greatest) would be the WM20 main event where Chris Benoit won the title. Growing up a huge Chris Benoit fan this match holds a special place in me for many reasons. It was a great contest all around with a lot of good action, it had some amazing ring psychology, an ending that I did not expect (I thought they would hold off a month and have him win in Edmonton at Backlash, but the real surprise was HHH tapping out to the crossface) and also had maybe the best ending to a WM main event (with HHH tapping out and Benoit and Guererro celebrating to close of the show was one of my all time favorite moments). The other 2 matches were amazing in their own right, but for me the main event at wrestlemania 20 was the best.

Since we are talking about the greatest WrestleMania main event match of all time, I think I need to clarify my response. Dictionary.com lists one of the definitions of greatest as "Of outstanding significance or importance." By that definition, I have to give that nod to Hulk Hogan vs. Andre The Giant, WrestleMania III. As a match, it definitely doesn't hold up to some of the other matches in Mania history. However, as a spectacle, it is unparalleled. 93,000 people packed the Pontiac Silverdome to see Andre the Giant, who for 15 years had never been pinned or submitted, battle Hulk Hogan, who was beginning his third year as WWF Champion and was the face of the revolution within professional wrestling at the time. Back in 1987, this was Old School vs. New School 101. Hogan slamming Andre is still the most iconic wrestling moment in history today. It's what people remember from that era. If we are to be honest and say which one was the greatest in terms of hype, mainstream appeal, and iconic moments, Hogan v. Andre has to be up there.

However, my choice in the greatest changes if your definition of greatest is "Superior in quality or character." Then. the greatest WrestleMania main-event was probably, for me, Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker from this year's WrestleMania. The Streak vs. The Career stipulation took the drama level to the next level. The performances from both men were great during the match. Shawn Michaels, in particular, had a great performance in his final match. They kicked out of each others' finishers on multiple occasions, and if I were watching the show live, I would have sworn that Shawn Michaels' Sweet Chin Music after the moonsault spot was the end of the match. It was definitely the most dramatic WrestleMania main event I could remember since at least WrestleMania X-Seven's Rock-Austin match (if not since WrestleMania V's Hogan-Savage match).

That match was actually not the main event. This year they were in the main event, but their match at 25 was before a couple matches. I believe HHH vs Randy Orton was the finale that year.

My Vote

I think if Hogan/Rock wasn't that year a lot of us would be mentioned HHH vs Chris Jericho as one of the best ever. HHH was so over coming back from injury and Jericho was HATED!

But i'll have to go with WM X-Seven as well. The build up was great and the match seriously had everyone on edge. McMahon coming out was just the cherry on top and put a nice little swerve to an already classic match.

impossible to answer. there have been so many great main events in wrestlemania history and so many great stories told.

WM 6, Hogan vs. Warrior. amazing. read the poster above me that went into all the detail and you'll have my answer there.
WM 7, Hogan vs. Slaughter. similar as WM 6, only it was Hogan fighting for the whole USA. not the most technical match, but i've always loved Slaughter and this was a big deal for a little kid watching his hero regain the title for America.
WM 8, Flair vs. Savage. super personal story with the Elizabeth affair and the title on the line. plus, these two guys are arguably two of the greatest in the ring of all time.
WM 12, Iron Man Match between HBK and Bret Hart. incredible story telling and finish. the boyhood dream coming true was a great moment for the entire WWE Universe.
WM 14, Stone Cold vs. HBK with Iron Mike. perhaps the official start of the Attitude Era. arguably, maybe the King of the Ring and the birth of Austin 3:16 was the start, but regardless, when Austin won the title, things changed. and it was awesome.
WM 18, Rock vs. Hogan. Icon vs. Icon. technically, it didn't main event the show, but it could have. great story telling and a very split crowd on who to cheer.
WM 19, Angle and Lesnar. two of the greatest natural wrestlers in a true dream match. plus, useless bit of trivia, but it was the first time that there was a main event at Mania where both opponents used their real name. who knew? better yet, who cares? but still, it is interesting.
WM 20, Benoit vs. Triple H vs. HBK. huge Benoit fan (of his wrestling, not his death) and this was a great moment. his celebration with Eddie after both held the world titles was amazing. it was much deserved for both men. RIP.
WM 24, Edge vs. Undertaker. incredible match. much better than i expected. amazing finish and great feud to continue throughout the year.
WM 25 & 26, HBK vs. Undertaker. two of the biggest legends of all time doing what they do best and what they love most. totally epic encounters.

does it count that i gave like 50 instead of my favorite 1? if i had to choose just 1 of all the main events, i'd say that it'd be Taker & HBK. so much on the line and such a great story told by both men. plus they're two of my all-time favorites from the last 20 years.

to me its HBK vs. UNDERTAKER WM25 and 26. they were both GREAT they both had me on the edge of my seat. WM25 i wanted UNDERTAKER to win and keep the streak intact. WM26 same thing i wanted TAKER to win to keep the streak intact but i wanted HBK to win so he didnt retire i was torn between HBK and TAKER at WM26. WM25 was the better wrestling match but WM26 had more emotion in it. i'll never forget HBK slapping TAKER and telling TAKER to end him and then ended him with a jumping tombstone. i was happy TAKER kept the streak intact but sad HBK was retireing. RIP HBK

I would have to say Benoit, Micheals and HHH on WM 20. It was the most awesome macth all 3 men giving their best. It was also a long wait for benoit to win his World Champ.

In my opinion it's either Rock vs Austin or HBK vs Taker. But I'll have to go with HBK vs Taker. The only thing I didn't like from Rock vs Austin was the ending. It lagged to much. After Vince came out, we all were like "ok, Rock's gonna lose, finish the match...", but it kep going for about 5 minutes, lol

Wrestlemania's usually have multiple main events. If the match isn't the last one on the card it doesn't mean that it's not the main event.

Can't choose just one!!

Lemme give you some though..

  • WM III - Hogan vs Andre - the build for this was was just huge and still to this day, considered the start of pro wrestling
  • WM V - Randy Savage vs Hogan - A great match without a doubt and the feud at the time was huge aswell
  • WM VI - Hogan vs Warrior (title vs title match) - Warrior winning this was just huge..
  • WM XII - Bret Hart vs HBK - How can you not choose this, these 2 went at it for over an hour...to give us a spectacular match..
  • WM 2000 - Fatal 4 way elimination match - I really enjoyed this match, not the best but it was a screwjob finish..
  • WM X-Seven - The Rock vs Austin - At the best WM ever, the ending was the icing on the cake...
  • WM XXIV - Taker vs Edge - I was on the edge of my seat on this one just thinking Edge might end the streak..good match overall aswell..
  • WM XXVI - Taker vs HBK - Career vs Streak says it all...
So many great matches..if I pick one, has to be rock vs austin II...
