The Dudley Boyz And Their Legacy

punk is gold

Occasional Pre-Show
This is just like the title asks what is the Dudley Boyz legacy ,statistically they're the greatest of all-time,some might say they revolutionized the industry with there tlc matches at summerslam 2000 and wrestlemania x-7 but most of the credit has to go to the other teams they took all the high risks and bumps and one other thing has there ever been a great Dudley Boyz match without weapons,I don't think so.

Obviously the Dudleys are not the greatest technical wrestlers in the world. Fact is though, they know how to get a crowd into the show.

Number of championships aside, Team 3D/Dudleyz take a back-seat to the Roadwarriors IMO for greatest tag team of all-time. Had Hawk not died as early as he did, I'd imagine 3D might have been given a bigger run for their money.

IMO, in terms of hardcore history, yes, they're the greatest, but on the biggest of all stages in terms of overall success, Roadwarriors still walk away with the crown here.

You can compare them to other people all you like and say they're not as good but on their own terms of course they're one of the biggest and best tag teams o their era, if not of all time. The fact that they were part of the WWF Attitude tag team boom with guys like the Hardyz and E&C is enough to cement that alone.

I think the gimmick they've always had, they've done well. They do this take no prisoners, hard as nails thing and to be fair it works for them. They've always pulled it off because they come across as aggressive. With that type of gimmick though, you need to excel in hardcore matches, which they do. They're not the best technical wrestlers in the world, obviously. They've done very well for what they have. For me they're not the best ever though. I'd take the Outsiders over them. Also if we're looking for an underrated team that got the crowd really involved, I'd be going for the New Age Outlaws.

There is no legacy for the Dudleys. They want to be the team with the biggest number of title reigns, that's fine. Ask yourself who they wrestled. I love everything ECW, but in reality, what have the Dudleys done? Who have they beat that metters in this discussion? Thy never fought the Road Warriors, Rock & Roll Express, Demolition, Hart Foundation, etc. Who have they beat? The Hardy Boys? Edge & Christian? Please. The Dudleys legacy will always be the best tag team that didn't face any tag team that matters. The tag team division has been weak since the 90's. The Dudleys were a victim of the times. If they were around during the hey day of tag team wrestling, then they might have been good. Maybe.

Have to go 50/50 on this one, they were in some revolutionary matches, but as OP said the succfess of thos matches was who they were with. in the TLC matches Hardy'z and E&C were the stars Dudley'z were just the there to dish out the regular pain.

As far as history goes, they are technically the greatest team of all time, but titles don't make an awesome champ/s, if it was a real sport they would. I'll give them there props they have been everywhere and in every place they've been they were given the straps and were far from the worse entertainers. Including Asia where they view it as alot more real than the western world.

Biggest problem i think is they are stale, they haven't changed in all that time other than outfits. so in that light they absolutely suck :)

Regardless they are set in history stone.

as for your comment Cobra, well that would have been a bit difficult since HardCore didn't really exist in the 90's in WWF/WCW, didn't kick in til mid 90's then.

And who were Demolition? all they did was punch/forearm smashes and do a tag team finisher, they were just LOD clones that did nothing outside of there run in WWF which fizzeled quickly, and the Hart Foundation was only a great team because of Bret Hart, Jim Neidhardt was awfull in ring. Anyway so what if you beat another team, it's fake LOL not like they were really better wrestlers

but you are right, they've never faced any legendary teams, though i don't share your view on Edge and Christian they were a great entertaining team. They Hardy'z i'll 100% agree with you

Yes they are 23 time world tag team champions..they were awarded tag team of the decade 00'. put all that aside, they aren't anything compared to tage teams that ruled in the 80's and 90's...the thing is, then dudleyz have stayed together forever..other teams end up splitting after a lot of success...these two are horrible on their own and need each other...they entertain us with great hardcore matches, but they dissapoint in a normal tag match...

I can think of many teag teams that have had less reigns and are considered better than the dudleyz...
so in no particular order...

1. Fabolous Freebirds
2. Road Warriors
3. Rock n Roll Express
4. Hart Foundation
5. Steiner Brothers
6. Harlem Heat

Thats just a a few to name...but i think i covered the main ones..If the dudley's were around in the early 90's like these were and did what they did best, then you can consider them a great tag team...

But in this generation of tag teams, i have to say they are one of the best...

Team 3D/Dudleys are the greatest tag team of this decade without a doubt. Of all time, I say no. I think the Steiners are the greatest. But 3D has done it all within this decade.

In TNA alone, they've had great feuds with some great teams that may go down in history as some of the greatest teams. They've had great matches with Beer Money, LAX, The Motorcity Machine Gunz. All 3 teams may go down as some of the best tag teams created this decade. And no, weapons weren't involved in all of these classic encounters with 3D. And not to mention, I didn't even count AMW. I didn't even count the tag teams and the tag team tandems that have faced 3D. They have truly had a great run in TNA within this decade. I didn't even mention their WWE run and their run in Japan. They deserve the praise they get!

The Dudleyz have a legacy that they can be proud of. They are 20+ time world tag team champions and have held just about every major tag team title in pro wrestling of the last 20 years. However, are they the greatest of all time? Not a chance. Their title wins are quite impressive of course, but there have been better teams overall.

When you look at the likes of the Road Warriors, the Steiner Brothers, the Midnight Express, Rock n' Roll Express and a few others, the Dudleyz just really can't compete with them overall. The Road Warriors were mega stars no matter where they wrestled. They were always among the biggest draws wherever they worked and had feuds that are still talked about 25 years after they happened. The Steiner Brothers were just about the total package athletically. The RnR Express and Mightnight Express were legitimately tag team specialists that had tremendous feuds against each other and just about every other great wrestling team of the 80s.

The Dudleyz have been good but these teams listed and a few others were great when tag team wrestling was truly, truly a force in wrestling. You didn't have to scrounge around for great teams during the 80s, they practically grew on trees.

Cmon, get a pulse. The Dudley Boyz?? So many better tag teams through the years...which include but are not limited to:

Road Warriors/LOD, Demolition, Hart Foundation, Rockers, Steiner Brothers, Power & Glory, Powers and Pain, Natural Disasters, British Bulldogs, Colossal Connection, Faces of Fear, The Enforcers, High Energy, The Samoans, Nasty Boys, The Executioners, Megapowers, Megamaniacs, Money Inc. (Megabucks), The Outsiders, Rock n Roll Express, Midnight Express, Strike Force, Young Guns, and Two Dudes with Attitudes...

The Dudley Boyz were basically the Nasty Boys less the colorful attire and adding jeans and a wife beater and sprinkle a couple chairs in the match as well.

If anything, the Nasty Boys revolutionized the "punk" style tag team...and the Dudley Boyz (even their name is similar) added chairs to take it to the next level. A level, by the way, I would rather see other teams take part in...NOT the Dudley Boyz.

SAT Analogy Time!

Dudley Boyz :: Tag Team : Rob Van Dam :: Singles Wrestler

That's not a compliment either.

They're not awful...they're just nothing special. They kind of coasted through the scene in mediocrity. They won't be that missed when they're gone.

They are not the best team in WWF/WWE, NWA/WCW, or AWA history, and therefore they are not the best team in wrestling history, no matter how many tittles they won or will win. Personally, I give the "best ever" crown to the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom. And there are a couple dozen tag-teams I'd rank higher than the Dudley Boys in that discussion.

However, they are the best team of the past decade, the best team in ECW history, and the best team in TNA history. Not too shabby.

I keep seeing all of these references to them never having faced anybody. The fact is most of the teams mentioned, Road Warriors, Rock n Roll Express, Midnight Express, Hart Foundation, Steiner Brothers, Fabulous Freebirds etc etc none of those teams were in the Dudleys era. If they were, who knows how different history would be. But it seems unfair to say that John Cena isn't a huge star because he never beat Hulk Hogan or Andre the Giant. Now please don't take that as me being a Cena mark or that he is anything close to the greatest ever, but hopefully you get the point.

That's a good point to be fair. The Dudley's were very much a product of their era. Maybe they wouldn't have been huge in the early 90's, but then it's fair to say that maybe Hulk Hogan wouldn't have gotten over today.
