The Darrelle Revis Situation

Big Sexy

Deadly Rap Cannibal
Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is the the best cover corner in the NFL and according to the Jets owner, there is a chance he won't play this season. Now I don't believe for a second that he will sit out the entire season but if he did even miss part of the season it would hurt the Jets. Without Revis the Jets still have a good team and a very good defense but no way are they as good as they would be with him in the lineup.

Revis deserves a new deal and deserves to be the highest paid corner but it looks like the two sides are very far apart on the exact amount he should get. The Jets need Revis to make a run at a championship this season. Revis is a true shut down corner and those are very rare in the NFL. When you have a corner who can shut down the best receivers in the league, it shuts down one side of the field. It also opens up another defender like a safety or linebacker that normally would be helping out on the elite receivers. The Jets defensive scheme is able to work a lot better because of Revis and his ability to shut down the oppositions best receiver.

After Revis the Jets still have Cromartie who can be a solid number one but no where near as good as Revis. Then you have a rookie in Kyle Wilson who would probably be the other starter and you're left with just a decent nickel corner in Dwight Lowery. They have basically nothing after that.

So what are your thoughts on the situation? Will he sign, when will he sign, and what affect does this have on the Jets season?

I don't think there's any chance that Revis sits out the whole season and I'll tell you why. The NY Jets have a legitimate chance to win the Superbowl this season WITH Revis in the lineup and the organization knows this. There's no way they will sacrifice their chance this season to win and not give Revis a new contract.

There's a lot of hype and talk about the Jets nowadays and Revis is a cornerstone for the defence and you can't go into the season without him. The organization will realize this sooner rather than later and sign Revis and put him on the field. This deal has to get done and I think it will happen around the last pre-season game for the Jets.

There are 3 problems that have caused this situation to get to where it has gotten. Al Fucking Davis, the lack of a Salary Cap, and Rex Ryan.

Al Davis gave Nnamdi Asomugha a ridiculous 15 million dollars annually. No Corner has ever gotten anywhere NEAR that amount before. Now Revis, who is a better player then Nnamdi, deserves a new contract, and wants to make more money annually then Nnamdi. If Al Davis doesn't go off his rocker and give Nnamdi such an insane deal, Revis wouldn't be asking for such a huge amount.

The lack of a salary cap, you would think would help the Jets be able to sign him. However, the uncapped season has such strict limitations on resigning players, disallowing players to resign for more then (I think) 130% of their current deal. The only way to circumvent this is to give players a huge signing bonus. Revis wants a new deal that would be well beyond that 130% threshold, and the Jets don't want to give a big signing bonus.

I love Rex Ryan more then anyone else here. However, he created this monster. All last season, he kept spouting off about how Darelle Revis is the greatest ever at the position, is the best player he ever coached, etc, etc. Well, if your coach keeps telling the world you're the best player at your position, you want to be compensated as such.

Anyway, there really very little chance that Revis sits out the entire year. If it got to the point where he would miss regular season games, the Jets almost certainly would cave somewhat, and Revis would get signed. However, as needed as he was last year for this D to be as great as it was, the Jets have enough pieces to be able to piece together a very good D still. The only scary thing is that Revis' uncle (Sean Gilbert) was a former NFL player, who actually did hold out for an entire season (and ultimately got traded). The Jets won't trade Revis, but the fact that his Uncle is advising him causes a little concern.

This is why I can't stand football. If someone thinks they deserve more money, they can holdout, accept the fines, and wine and cry until they get it. Yes, Revis does deserve to be the highest paid corner. He should get that money in 2012 after his current contract expires. If the Jets wanted to pay him 5 million this year, he should thank them for giving him a raise. This applies to all players who hold out. It's ridiculous and needs to be fixed in the next CBA.

Well, I think everybody is in agreement that the Jets Super Bowl run is shot without Revis this year. While I do think he deserves the contract, I still don't like the way players go about getting by sitting out until someone caves in. It's bad for the orginization, the player's image, and most importantly the fans who paid to see the team be at their best which can't happen b/c one of their most important players is sitting. I see this situation working out much like Emmitt Smitt/Cowboys in the early 90s. The Jets will lose a few games then realise how much they need Revis and then cave in his demand b/c I doubt Revis won't mind sitting out this season with his uncle in his ear.

This whining and moaning about players being selfish is the biggest load of shit known to mankind. NFL Contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on. Until the NFL starts guaranteeing these guys contracts, the players SHOULD hold out. Teams will cut you loose as soon as they feel you aren't living up to the contract, but as soon as you outplay it and want a new one, they bitch and moan about loyalty, even though they themselves have no fucking loyalty.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Leon Washington is a prime example of this. Last offseason, he wanted (and deserved) a new deal, because his original deal wasn't paying him based on his pro-bowl level performance). The 2 sides were at a stalemate, but he decided to play anyway. In Week 7 against the Raiders, he suffered a compound tib-fib fracture, ending his season. The Jets showed how loyal they are to their good soldiers who play on despite contract disputes, by shipping him to Seattle for a 5th round pick. He will most likely never get the contract he deserved, because of a freak injury, and was forced out of his team because of it.

Darelle Revis had a contract giving him a total of 21 million dollars, ONLY 1 Million of it for the 2010 season, and the rest would be guaranteed if he stayed healthy. He saw what happened to Leon Washington (his teammate), and realized he doesn't want that happening to him. Holding out is the only weapon a player has in any NFL contract negotiation, take that from them, and they players will be even more fucked then they are now.

Like Trooper said, you are completely wrong here. This isn't the NBA where your contract automatically gets fulfilled. In the NFL the only thing that is guaranteed is the guaranteed money portion of the contract. With everything else you can be released at any time and you will not make whatever is left on your contract. Revis without a new deal is basically making jack shit this next season and if he were to suffer a serious career threatening injury then all of the great things he did last year would be for not.

Ok, Big Sexy and ST, I understand what you guys are saying about the unprotected contracts. Although Mark Schlereth corrected me on this before you guys did. The only reason that I really have a problem with it is that it hurts the fans who paid to see the game. More often than not, situations like these usually lead to loses for the teams and as a fan who paid to see the game, I wouldn't want to know the only reason my team isn't living up to expectations b/c one player is sitting out. I just disagree with from the perspective of the paying fan but I do agree that the NFL need to work on more secured contracts. Every year, more and more holdouts are happening and Revis should be major wake up call for the NFL.

In all honesty, the fans are the least important part of this equation. The player has to do what is best for himself and his family, and that means getting the most money while he can, before his earning power is snuffed out completely by the age of 40. I know these guys make a boatload of money, and waah waah, they shouldn't want more. But as I said, their earning power is dried up at 40, and then they can't get any kind of health insurance, because of football-related injuries. They NEED to get as much as then can before they get out of the game. And as I said your earning power can be snuffed out instantaneously in football due to an injury.

I just disagree with from the perspective of the paying fan but I do agree that the NFL need to work on more secured contracts. Every year, more and more holdouts are happening and Revis should be major wake up call for the NFL.
You're 100% right. NFL needs to do something, and the least they can do is guarantee at least 50% of the player contracts, meaning the guys will get paid somewhat regardless.
