AUTHOR'S NOTE- In no way is this essay meant to be taken seriously. It is a sustained irony work akin to Jonathan Swift's literary masterpeice "A Modest Proposal" in which cannibalism of children in Ireland is suggested as a way to solve hunger and prevent financial burden. This is meant to be controversial and spur debate, not to offend anyone.
In or around 1981, American doctors at the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention honed in on an odd set of symptoms, which today have become known as the "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome," or AIDS for short. AIDS, and it's partner in crime "HIV" have become pandemic in just a couple of decades. Once a disease thought to only affect "druggies and queers," AIDS is generally recognized as a very real disease, and one that must be dealt with seriously.
In 2007 alone, AIDS killed 2.1 milion people world-wide, 330,000 of whom were kids. 33.2 million people live with the disease. Of those 2.1 million deaths, more than 1,575,000 of those deaths occured in sub-saharan Africa, where most scientists believe the disease originated.
Treatments for AIDS and HIV are expensive, and hardly failsafe. The sub-saharan African deaths have totally halted, even ******ed, the economic development and survival of many of those counties. While many bodies attempt to prevent the spread of the disease through education, safe-sex promotion, and needle-exchanges, there are still many very powerful groups in opposition to these programs, especially the religious right who feel that abstinence should be the only cure.
I am going to take it several steps forward.
1. AIDS infected patients.
These individuals represent a drain on the world economy, because the medication they require is expensive to research, produce, and administer. Furthermore, there are even many AIDS patients who are tried and convicted of murder for raping and infecting another person if they know they have the virus. There is no cure for the disease, and the result is further transmission of the virus and paranoia.
The current population of Austrailia is 20,434,176. The current population of people with AIDS is 33,200,000. PERFECT. Move everyone out of Austrailia who lives there now, and move everyone with AIDS in. Aussieland becomes AIDSYLAND. This way, there can be no further infection from the AIDS virus to those who are not currently infected. Any doctors who have the disease could have a terrific opportunity to set up a research center in Sydney on future disease prvention with a generous grant from the United Nations.
2. Sub-saharan Africa.
This is a far trickier situation. With sub-saharan Africa, you have a population of millions, and over 15% of them are on their way to AIDSYLAND. It is obviously going to take some time to repair the economy there, but with a lower cost of medication needed, they should be well on their way. The environment there also needs to be repaired, which should be feasible with a population decrease of nearly 25%.
3. Those affected with HIV.
Now, HIV is the "pre-cursor" to AIDS, but HIV is vastly more treatable and significantly less risky. At the same time, HIV can be transmitted the same way AIDS can, so some steps have to be taken to prevent further spread.
Castration is the first option, but it is a messy and expensive process. Seems to be we just need to gather up HIV patients and take a page out of George Carlin's book. Off to Antarctica! Since sex and needles are the two most common ways to transmit HIV, life in a place too cold to get laid will certainly help control the spread. Also, since they will begin to partially subsist off of a diet of whale blubber, they will almost certainly become fat, which will make them less desirably. Ugliness is nature's contraceptive!
Unlike AIDSyland, the move to Antarctica will not be permanent. It is a temporary move as the doctors in AIDSyland develop treatments and cures for those with HIV.
I welcome critiques and ideas from the rest of you on my idea for the cure for AIDS.
