The Compliment Sandwich: Superbad!

So, this is the latest in my series of threads that encourage people to really look at a subject matter and get to grips on what they really think about something. The way it works is very simple. You state something that you like about the subject matter. It could be something as simple as how they look or how much they make you enjoy something. After that, you simply state something that you do not like about the subject matter. Again, it could be anything. After that, you, simply round it off with something positive.

Simple as that

Yes, after some time off of this little thread series, I have decided to go back to my roots and update the shit out of my signature... Not only that, I have been trying to find the time to really get to grips with this thread series again and I finally managed to get the time to start it up again. Next to be examined by the masses is one of the Apatow series of films that seemed to have a huge amount of success over such a small period of time... Superbad!

So, let's get right down to it!

Superbad might be the funniest film I have ever seen, that much is clear to me. The performances of the whole cast took them right out of the unemployment line and straight into Hollywood and that cannot be underestimated. The plot of the movie is very simple and has been done plenty of times before but I cannot remember a film that did it this well. It reminds me of American Pie from the outset and given that American Pie is one of the best movie-viewing pleasures I have ever gotten, I would say that that is a compliment to the movie. There is no part of the movie that disappointed me or left me underwhelmed and that includes the ending. A lot of people seemed to dislike it because they had spent a lot of time building their friendship and then a wedge was put between them. Still, I loved it and thought that it showed more than the typical feeling you would get in one of these movies.

What I didn't like about this movie was all of the talk about it. You probably wont be aware of this but in Scotland, everyone was talking about this movie like it was Titanic all over again. It is a hilarious movie but it brings out the people who really do not care enough about cinema and that is what I cannot stand in any source of media. For example, The Rock coming back to the WWE has brought back some casual viewers to the WWE and they always act as if they know better... That shit drives me crazy. Superbad was the same thing! People talked about Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen as if they loved him in Dawson's Creek and as Cal in The 40 Year Old Virgin. Fuck off! No one had heard of him before this movie!

Still, that works in the movie's favour too because it really brought these actors to the forefront of people's minds. Most of the cast that were involved in that movie have gone on to find more success than they might have otherwise. Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen and Michael Cera have all taken advantage of the buzz about this movie and that is a weonderful achievement for a movie that should have only applied to a very niche audience.

Your turn!

Compliment

It rivals The Hangover as the funniest thing I have ever seen. Everything about the film is almost perfect. Jonah Hill is perfectly cast as Seth, the 2 cops are 2 of the greatest comedy characters ever, and McLovin is...well, McLovin! Funny as hell, and reminds me of the American Pie days when that franchise was actually good!

Criticism

Michael Cera. The only bad thing about this film. I fucking hate that guy. He brings almost every scene down, there is just something unlikeable about his character and now he plays the same sort of character in every film he stars in. Asshole.

The best line he has is when he reads Fogells fake I.D and comes out with "1 name? Who are you? Seal?" That was funny, but as a whole the Evan character is just a jackass.

Compliment

The sheer number of quotable lines from the film will ensure it remains one of my favourites for years. My friends, brother and I regularly come out with random lines from that movie and it always gets a laugh!

Plus I have a friend with glasses so he is now known as McLovin, McFogell and then it has spread to McSweat, McVomit, McRancid etc, he actually comes up with some himself. Gotta love a guy who can take a joke.

I love Superbad....McLovin bailed!!!

What many people don't know about Superbad is Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg loosely based the screenplay of this incredible comedy on their own lives. The two friends started the script when they were just 14, and when both reached Hollywood, they were able to find a vehicle to bring it life. In my eyes, the result was truly one of the most hilarious, not to mention authentic, high school films I can recall. memory. It truly serves as a time capsule back to the catastrophy and trepidation of senior year, when many a young life feels like it's reaching a crossroads. The movie showed a phenomenal mix of the sense of urgency to become adults quickly as possible with the inner longing we all experienced to stay young forever.

Unfortunately, SuperBad took some of those longings a little too far. The movie was so outrageous in its protrayals of some of its characters that it became absolutely impossible to suspend any sense of disbelief. That's not always a bad thing, but it felt like too much. Speaking of too much, the language was over-the top in terms of graphic language. Im not a prude and I don't mind swearing in a movie whatsoever. However, the movie got almost annoying at times as it seemed a character couldn't get through a scene without dropping an "F Bomb" 3 or 4 times. It felt like the language was there just for the sake, and detracted from the film. You know it's bad when my wife, whose favorite word is sometimes the "F-Bomb", felt it was a little much.

That being said, the movie truly was hilarious. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are hilarious in their attempts to buy booze that they hope will ultimately lead to sex. Their recruiting of McLovin, who has the worst fake ID in the history of them, only adds to the hilarity. The journey that ensues through a convenience store standoff, an ill-advised car ride with an older gentleman, and finally a racous jaunt at a party with people twice their age had me doubled over in laughter each time I watched it. I recall my wife reminding me of her visiting parents in the next bedroom to quiet because I was laughing so hard upon first viewing. Seth Rogen and the actor who played the other cop were brilliant as the bumbling, incompetant cops who seemed to act out of nostalgia rather then any sense of duty, ultimately leading to the descimation of their cop car. I can count on one hand movies that have made me laugh as hard, and perhaps none harder.

It really captures the average High School kid's weekend pretty well. Well, it exaggerates the hell out of it, but the general idea is there. I can't tell you how many nights were spent trying to get to a cool party or get some beer or weed, trying to hook up with a popular girl that I had no shot with. I saw a lot of stuff in that movie that sorta held true.

I don't find it funny. There, I said it, I didn't think it was funny. There were some moments that had me laughing, but I don't find it nearly as funny as most people.

Whoever cast Emma Stone is a genius. This was her first real role in a film, and she nailed it. Not only did she play this role well, she played it so well that she'd be offered gradually bigger parts, and now she's the go to girl for all things comedy. She was great in Zombieland, solid in Easy A, and she only promises to continue getting better.

Why would you compliment sandwich this film? It's actually a pretty fucking good movie. This is probably the greatest thing Jonah Hill will ever do, so I'm not going to nitpick at that cunt's one unequivocal success.

Agreed, it will most likely always be the best thing Jonah Hill will ever do. He was also hilarious in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (albeit in a minor role), and was pretty decent in Knocked Up (another minor role) but I cannot see him ever having another leading role that tops Superbad.

He seems to be getting less funny every time I see him in a new role. His talent is going down as his waist size is going up

;);)SuperBad is the greatest teen comedy not featuring actual teens ever made--except Chris Plasse(McLovin) I agree, the quotable lines are epic and the love story undercurrents make me feel like I'm in 12th grade all over again. The best and lasting part that will ultimately make SuperBad better that The HangOver is----NO FREAKIN' SEQUELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!:banghead:

You must not have ever seen Get Him to the Greek:banghead:Speak on his career path only when you have seen that movie

I saw it, it was shit; Jonah Hill can't carry a film by himself. Furthermore, Puff Daddy shouldn't be acting and I'm still pissed at Britain for exporting Russell Brand. It'd be too soon if he ever starred in another American film again. I hate him so much that I'd sacrifice ever being able to look at Katy Perry's tits again to have him permanently deported from this country.
