The career that was the Boogeyman

CM Steel

A REAL American
The Boogeyman charactor was a spin from a show that was supoose to debut on the then UPN network before merged with the WB network. A WWE Tough Enough would-be named Marty Wright played the Boogeyman charactor in the WWE. The Boogeyman would go over in feuds with such former world champions like JBL and Booker T. Before getting released by the WWE, before Booker T who is/was a good friend of Marty Wright's talked the WWE in re-hiring the Boogeyman within a 15 day period.

Where the Boogeyman would have mini-feuds before feuding with a future world champion in the Miz. The Boogeyman would later be drafted over to the ECW brand from Smackdown where the Boogeyman would feud with Big Daddy V only to be released by the WWE once again. The Boogeyman charactor in the WWE was suppose to be somewhat like the Creeper from the Batman comic book series. But the Boogeyman was booked by the WWE like a wild card superstar who the WWE would rarely see in a match. Kinda like in the first Mortal Kombat video game playable charactors would fight the Reptile ninja on a different level.

So what can we really rate the career that was the Boogeyman?

I liked the Boogey Man he always made me laugh I loved the segment at Wrestlemania right before Booker T fought the BoogeyMan and he had all those strange encounters like Snitsky licking Mae Youngs foot Million Dollar Man and Eugene bouncing the basketball and Goldust dressed as a women. Boogeyman was a fun wrestler while he lasted that got over well with the fans and he will be one who never be forgotten

just imagine now if they had the Boogeyman with the same look but with a Brodus Clay gimmick and they called him the Boogie Man

It was a fun character while it lasted. He had the feud with Finlay that was ok.

One of my favorite moments was during the DX reunion when he wanted to join DX

I thought he was pretty entertaining and got a kick out of his segments. Was he a ***** workrate baron who could do 1004 holds? Hell no, but he was entertaining and that's a large part of what a wrestling show is about. You need entertainers like him to lighten the mood after the intense dramatic spots on the card, or to help frame the high spot laden gimmick matches, hardcore brawls, and strong style beatdowns.

I thought the character of the Boogeyman was kinda cool. Kinda like a comic book or cartoon character of death. A PG Undertaker if you will, to take Dusty's tagline for a minute. Boogeyman had charisma in the ring, but sadly in this era of most talent being truly under one roof he was faded out. Vince buying the competition may have been a good business move in a sense, but it was the worst that could've happened from the creative side. It's like having a Baskin Robbins and their 31 flavors get bought out by mom and pop and then you're back to chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. No matter who won the "Monday Night Wars" it would've been the wrong one because, in wrestling at least, the competition was needed. For those who remember the "territory" days I can honestly that, in my opinion, that was the best time in wrestling. You had more talent, more possible storylines and the promoters worked with each other.

The character was fun, if not disgusting, but that was the point I guess. The great thing about Thee Boogeyman character is that, unlike Eugene, they explained why the Boogeyman was like that and I believe his backstory was linked to Tough Enough Applicant Marty Wright. Something about him going crazy or nuts after not being selected but if the character started to become stale he could easily transition back to Marty Wright. Something very few superstars had the luxury of doing after being stuck with a character that would eventually get stale (like Val Venis ... after the porn star gimmick got boring his career was pretty much over).

I remember liking the Boogeyman a lot back then. I really looked forward to the very few times that he started getting a storyline. The feuds with Booker, JBL, and Finlay were all interesting, at least to me anyways.

I liked him and he had his funny moments like kissing Sharmell with the worms at WM 22 but It was disgusting when he ate the fucked up thing on Jillian Halls face I came close to puking but you know Marty was already in his 40's when he debuted as the boogeyman so I wouldn't have expected a long run with him

It's difficult to rate a novelty act, although I must admit I enjoyed seeing the guy because he played it straight and seemed really into the character. Marty Wright was in magnificent physical shape underneath all the mishigas he wore and that somehow made him more realistic than a guy like Kamala, who was nothing more than a fat American man playing a nutso African.

WWE could never seem to decide whether they wanted Boogeyman or not. Sometimes, it was: "If you like Papa Shango, you're gonna love the Boogeyman!" .....and sometimes the company just seemed to want to sweep the gimmick under the rug and move onto something else.

When the company brought him back after first releasing him, I figured they had a real plan in mind. Wrong again.

I liked him mainly for the worms.

I wonder what he is doing now a days

He was okay in the ring, and he actually had a gimmick that worked.
