The best fighter from your Country or state

Super Hans

we we we so excited, we so excited.
Ok so i want to find out the best fighter from your area,i put in state as well as i want to expand my knowledge on the more less plauded fighters in history and i realize if Americans can pick out of the whole country it would be a case most Hallmark names being brought up.So who is the best boxer or mma athlete that has ever came out of your country or state?

With me being from Scotland,we have'nt produced much.Th would probably best would probably be Ken Buchanan who in the 70's was a hard nosed no nonsense boxer. He won the Lightweight title and defended it a few times before losing it in a war against then undefeated and p4p all time great Roberto 'Hands of Stone' Duran.

So who is your choice?

Well for me, I have an easy choice, being from Montreal Québec Canada, I have the privilege to pick, not only the best fighter from here but one of the best fighters in the UFC right now and possibly ever, George St. Pierre.

Need I say anything? Hes the Current Welterweight Champ, hes won 7 straight fights and will be the next Coach on T.U.F along side ( Wait for it ) F*ck You Koscheck.

what about arturo gatti whistler?I thought he has more love in Montreal than GSP at this point in his career.I cant say for sure as im obviously not from there.

That would be the Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali. He took boxing by storm and never looked back. He made boxing as big as it had ever been since the 20s or so with classics headlining Madison Square Garden and partially inspiring the Rocky series. He's the greatest heavyweight and maybe greatest boxer ever. He became a symbol of sports around the world and is still incredibly recognizable. Find a copy of the opening ceremonies in Atlanta from 96 if you've never seen it. That is chilling stuff.

You know when making this thread KB.I knew you would grace me with me with your presence being from the state that a sporting icon and the greatest of all time hails from.Ali is one of my sporting heroes and his posters still take pride of place in my house. One of my favourite qoutes is "Im so fast that last night i turned off the light switch in my bedroom and was in bed before the room was dark".It will be a sad day when he passes on,a sad day indeed.

I'd say former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes. As Guy pointed out to me he is a dick but the guy was good. Hughes was the UFC champ 2 times and holds the UFC record for defending the belt 7 times and most wins in the UFC.

As for boxing the only name that popped into my head was Leon Spinks, the guy was an Olympic gold medalist in 76 and was a WBC Heavyweight champ. He also defeated Ali by split decision in 78 after losing to him earlier in the year.

Well me being from Fort Wayne, Indiana the choice has to be Jon Fitch he's not only from the same state as me he is also from the same city. I mean he's like the number 2 welterweight in the world and all he does is win so he is my choice.

Frankie Edgar. The guy that beat the seemingly unbeatable BJ Penn. He lives like an hour from me. I just found out today which is pretty sweet. Some boxer named Levander Johnson lived in Atlantic City. He died in 2005 but he still lived near me. I don't know if he was any good or not considering I don't follow boxing at all, but it says he was a world champ. These are really the only two I found in my 5 minutes of looking.

Being from Buffalo N.Y. we never really had a great pro boxer. There is the undefeated Baby Joe Mesi who mainly fought tomato cans throughout his career but still posted a 36-0 record. So I had to look at N.Y. all together and I would say the best fighter from the state has to be Brooklyn born Mike Tyson. He is the youngest heavy weight champion ever at 20 years old. Also the first to hold the WBC,WBA,and IBF at one time. In his prime he was one of the most feared boxers because of his KO power. Another boxer from N.Y. to mention is Jake Lamotta born in the Bronx. He was the first to beat the Sugar Ray Robinson. Known for his hard punching and very strong chin.

As for best mixed martial artist from N.Y. right now I would have to say Niagara Falls's Rashad Evans. Evans has a 14-1 record and is a former UFC light heavy weight champion. Evans is only one win away for a shot at the LHW championship all he needs to do is beat Rampage this Saturday.

Being the great sports state that it is, Massachusetts has produced at least three of the most famous pro boxers in history. The first one that comes to mind is the man known as one of the last great bareknuckles fighters, and a man who actually preferred to fight w/ gloves. I am referring to, of course, to the "Great John L." himself, John L. Sullivan, from Boston MA who is primarily known as the ground breaker between the use of the old London prizefight rules, and the more modern use of Marquis De Queensbury rules. The holder of the Heavyweight Championship of the World is probably more renowned for losing the championship to Gentleman Jim Corbett in the first heavyweight title bout contested under Marquis deQueensbury regs.
the next one that comes to mind is the great Rocky Marciano, all 49-0 of him. His undefeated record of 49-0 w/43 KO's is still one of the most impressive records in the Boxing business. While he'll never be remembered as a cutie in the ring, his chin of granite coupled with his fists of iron and inexaustible stamina hold him a deserved place in boxing annals as one of the greats.
The last fighter from MA that comes to mind is the man who dominated the middleweight division during the bulk of the 80's, Marvelous Marvin Hagler. From the time he was on the recieving end of a very questionable draw at the hands of Vito Antofurmo in 79' until he lost his title to Sugar Ray Leanord in 87, this man WAS the middleweight division. His war against Hearns is still one of the most vicious fights I have ever seen in my life. combining great power with underrated boxing ability, Hagler was a man to be reckoned with during his long career.

The best boxer to come out of Denmark is a very good question Caps, cause there's a decent bunch of people that have accomplished a lot in the business, but could very well have had the exact same career that someone previously had.

We have Brian Nielsen, perhaps the only Danish heavyweight boxer that I know of coming out from Denmark, he only lost two fights, and was one of the heavyweight boxers closest to beating Rocky Marciano's winning streak, (hell he was equal to Rocky's winning streak, 49-0) lost his first fight in his 50th professional match, his second defeat he suffered in a fight with Mike Tyson.

Then there's two super middle-weight boxers including Mikkel Kessler and Mads Larsen, both who accomplished a lot, Mikkel still going, Mads as well I believe (sadly those two won't fight each other..)

And then there's the Bredahl Brothers (Jimmi and Johnny) in Light-junior weight (Jimmi) and Bantam weight (Johnny) who both accomplished a lot, all 4 of these people are really considered to be the better names in boxing to come out of Denmark (or I may just not be old enough to know any other names)

I'm not really sure which one would be considered the better one although, all of them have won a multitude of matches, but then there's also the fact that every single one of them has lost either 2 or 3 matches.

So if I really had to choose just one, I would probably go with Brian Nielsen, because of the fact that he has the bigger amount of victories and having held the IBO world heavyweight championship, plus two bronze medals in amateur boxing (one Olympic and one European amateur championship)

Easily Jon Fitch, but honorable mention goes out to Miguel Torres and Chris Lytle, both Indiana natives. Torres was a very dominate Bantamweight no more than a year ago and Chris Lytle is one of the toughest fighters in the entire Welterweight division and UFC. Torres has drastically gone down hill since his loss to Brian Bowles but Lytle remains a very tough and durable opponent for any Welterweight.

On to point though. Jon Fitch is the best fighter out of Indiana currently. He is the number two Welterweight in the world regardless of what anyone else thinks. He has one of the toughest chins in all of MMA and is a born winner, seeing as his only UFC loss is to the current champion. Just like FT75 said, not only is Fitch from Indiana but he is also from Fort Wayne, the same home town as myself and my aforementioned neighbor.
