For the longest time, the debate has raged on. Is the British band, The Arctic Monkeys a good band or are they vastly overrated. In my own personal opinion, they are probably the best band to come out of Britain for a long time and it is also my view that they are probably some of the best lyricists in the UK music scene at the present moment. So let’s take a look back at some of the work that the Arctic Monkeys have done and reach some conclusions.

The first album that was released by the Arctic Monkeys was “Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not”. The album had huge success and is currently the best selling album in their discography, selling enough copies to go four time platinum in the UK. Bursting onto the scene, some of the best songs from the Arctic Monkeys library can be found on this album. For example, “I bet you look good on the dancefloor”, “Mardy Bum”, “When the sun goes down” and “A certain romance” can all be found on this album. It is a great first album and really did cement the Arctic Monkeys as one of the better British groups on the alternative Rock scene. “When the sun goes down” is probably my favourite song on the album. I love how divers the Arctic Monkeys are and this song is a prime example of how good they can be. Of course, most of the songs on the album are very good and I is of no wonder that they found so much mainstream success with it.

The Arctic Monkeys picked up many awards for “Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not”. A lot of people will say that it is at this point that hype took over and really raised them into the stratosphere, regardless of how good the music was or wasn’t. I personally thought it was a very good album and I was really excited about the next one that would release.

The next album that was released by the Arctic Monkeys was “Favourite Worst Nightmare”. It sold enough copies to go straight to number one in the UK album charts and followed up on the first success of the previous album. Selling enough copies to go double platinum in the UK, it sold less copies than it’s predecessor. In my opinion though, it is a much better album than the first one. I was never an Arctic Monkeys fan until this album came out. Before this album I could not see what people saw in the Arctic Monkeys. Sure, I liked a few of the songs but they never did enough to make me a fan in all honesty. However, that changed with this album. It is one of my favourites and I think that if this album is anything to go by then “Humbug” should be a great album. Some of the songs on this album go above and beyond anything on the first album and quite easily. It is not to say that the first album was poor, it is a reminder to me how good the second one was. “Fluorescent Adolescent” is my favourite and is just a great song. Lyrically it is very good and musically is it much better. Some of the other stand out songs on the second album are: “Brianstrom”, “Teddy Pickers”, “Balaclava”, “Do the bad thing” and “Old Yellow Bricks”. In all honesty, this album is probably one of the most diverse and intriguing albums that I have hears in a long time and I would urge you to give it a listen.

The latest offering from the Arctic Monkeys, “Humbug”, will be released on the 21st of August and I am interested in hearing what people think of the previous albums and the band in general. So what do you think, are they a good band that is worthy of the hype? Or are they vastly overrated? Or do you think that the music that they put out is complete gash?

They're exactly the type of band that I'd try really hard to hate, but I can't. They're awesome and 505 is never far from the top of my playlist.
