In the previous weeks leading to the Rumble, MVP attacks Mr. Kennedy in the VIP lounge. His contract is soon coming up for renewal and Vicky tells him that in order to get a contract for the same money and the same benefits, he would have to eliminate at least one person from the Royal Rumble.
A steel cage match is made between Edge and Jeff Hardy.
Royal Rumble 2009:

Backstage, Chavo and Big Show are talking. Chavo asks Big Show to have his back tonight (as a favor for the stuff that Chavo did for Show) in order for them be the final two men in the Rumble. Fine by Big Show.
Melina vs Beth Phoenix: Melina wins the title.
JBL loses to John Cena.
Backstage, HHH meets JBL and sticks it to him for not winning. JBL is not pleased.
Jeff Hardy vs Edge for the title in a steel cage, doesnt matter who wins.
Meanwhile, backstage, JBL talks to Shawn Michaels and tells him to eliminate Triple H from the Royal Rumble. Although it is every man for himself, will he do it to his friend?
Royal Rumble match:
#1: Rey Mysterio
The 2006 Royal Rumble winner paces himself for whoever #2 will be. He is pretty sure of himself, until he hears not so good music.
#2: Big Show
Uh oh. After the initial shock wears off, they fight with mostly Show dominated, but Rey manages to not be eliminated.
#3: Finley
Accompanied by Hornswaggle, Finley goes after Show.
#4: Chavo Guerrero
Chavos buddy, Big Show is in there, so Chavo is pretty much sure of himself. Its Chavo-Rey, Show-Finley.
#5: The Brian Kendrick
Accompanied by Ezikiel Jackson, he takes his time posing for the camera. Once in there, he gives Finley the Sliced Bread using Big Show as springboard. Show isnt happy and gives Krendrick the chops.
#6: Mr. Vince McMahaas
Mr. McMahaas struts to the ring in a suit. At this point, everyone stops wrestling and gangs up on Mr. McMahaas. Chops by Show, 619 by Rey and even Hornswaggle gives him a frogsplash. McMahaas is eliminated. Before he leaves, he grabs the microphone and says: (pointing at the ring) YOURE FIRED (pointing at JR) AGAIN!
#7: Hurricane Helms
#8: Ricky Ortiz
#9: Jack Swagger
Swagger and Ortiz continue their ECW feud by beating each other up. Swagger tries to suplex Ortiz, but he blocks it. Rey helps out and he and Ortiz try to double suplex Swagger, at which point Chavo helps out Swagger and they try to suplex both faces. This keeps going on with the other wrestlers (except Big Show) until Chavo, Kendrick and Swagger get suplexed by the four faces.
#10: Great Khali
Khali and Big Show are face to face. After some trash talking, Khali throws Kendrick over the top and gets the elimination. Ezikil goes on the apron and gets a chop from Khali.
Big Show is like oh yeah and eliminates Finley.
Khali then eliminates Helms.
Big Show gets more agitated and eliminates Ortiz.
Khali eliminates Swagger.
Big Show gets even more agitated and eliminates Chavo.
Khali wait a minute?
Oops!
Now Show and Khali are battling it out and even throw Rey Mysterio at each other, using him as a weapon.
#11: Primo
Primo and Rey do some cruiserweight stuff, while Khali and Show fight in the corner.
#12: Mark Henry
Henry battles with both Primo and Mysterio.
#13: Vladimir Kozlov
Now, its Kozlov and Henry.
#14: Santino Marella
Santino, funny as usually, goes in the ring and takes the heads of Show and Khali and tries to bang them together. They block, look at each other and goodbye Santino.
Beth Phoenix, still angry about the loss of the Womens title, and now even angrier about Santinos elimination, goes in the ring to confront the two giants. And since one of them is Khali, who is a Punjabi Playboy, its pretty obvious what comes next.
#15: Miz
Kozlov puts Henry in a bearhug position and belly to bellys him over the top and out to the floor. Show and Khali are both on the rope trying to eliminate each other, and Kozlov dumps BOTH of them out. Kozlov looks at the other three, and then looks at the entrance asking for better competition.
#16: The BoogeyMan
After making his usual entrance, Kozlov makes short work of him and is eliminated. He stomps on the worms for good measure. Kozlov still wants better competition. The buzzer sounds off and he gets one.
#17: Triple H
Its HHH and Kozlov battling out and its stalemate.
#18: MVP
MVP tries his best to eliminate someone, anyone.
#19: Umaga
The Samoan Bull dowser makes his return and goes crazy on HHH, Rey, MVP, Primo and Miz. After that, him and Kozlov face off and go at it.
#20: CM Punk
Punk goes crazy on everyone he can get his hands on, hopefully without anyones nose getting broken. On second thought, that would be pretty interesting, so lets say everyones nose is broken.
#21: Shelton Benjamin
The U.S. champion battles with HHH.
#22: R-Truth
Truth raps from the crowd.
#23: HBK
#24: John Morrison
HBK superkicks Benjamin, but unlike last year, he just gets knocked out lying on the rope, basically waiting to be eliminated. Umaga attacks HBK, so not him. Primo and Rey double-team Kozlov, Morrison and Miz double team HHH and Punk battles Truth. That only leaves one man -> MVP.
Measuring, looking for an opening to end the slump that has delayed the progression of his career. The career that made him one of the highest paid superstars in WWE Universe, the career that made the longest reigning U.S. champion in Smackdown history. He He
gets tripped by Mr. Kennedy who made his appearance at ringside. After some trash talking, MVP turns around to see Truth tossing out Benjamin. MVP runs to R-Truth and gets eliminated as well.

At this point, Miz and Morrison are trying to eliminate HHH. JBL shows up at ringside and tells Michaels to help and eliminate him. HBK is conflicted and doesnt know what to do. He looks at the crowd, they cheer and HBK pushes Morrison and Miz out of the way. He looks at HHH, and superkicks him out of the ring.
#27: Carlito
HHH comes back in the ring and pedigrees both Miz and Morrison. He is face to face with Shawn Michaels and referees are in the ring separating the two. HHH gets free from the referees and grabs HBK by the hair. He clinches his fist and HBK is letting him get a shot in. No punches are drawn. HHH tells him GAME OVER and gives him the crotch chop as he leaves the ring.
#28: Kane
Carlito tries to eliminate Primo from behind, but unsuccessfully as Primo skins the cat. Primo yells at Carlito, but the latter points to CM Punk, saying that he did it. Primo believes him and goes after Punk, with Carlito giving the facial expression that his brother is pretty gullible.
Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels are renewing their feud with some punches to each others eye. Miz and Morrison eliminate Truth, while Umaga eliminates Mysterio and poses, waiting for the next entrant.
#29: The Undertaker
Carlito, Miz and eventually Umaga are eliminated by The Undertaker. Primo is eliminated by Kane.
#30: Randy Orton
The final entrant slowly arrives to the ring, alongside Cody Rhodes and Manu. Before he goes in the ring, he has a word with both Carlito and Primo. Once in the ring, he dumps Kofi and Morrison. Jericho eliminates Punk. Undertaker and Kane are face to face, then both grab Michaels by the neck and double chokeslam him to the outside. They look at the side of the ring and double clothesline Kozlov out to the floor.
The final four are The Undertaker, Kane, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho. Each take a corner and stare at each other. Orton whispers something to Cody and Manu, which prompts Cody to leave. Its Orton-Kane and UT-Jericho. After Jericho and Orton are knocked out, Kane and Undertaker finally go at it. Kane gets the chokeslam on The Undertaker. He goes to the top rope to do his clothesline, but Jericho trips him and pushes him to the outside. UT places Jericho in the Tombstone position, but Jericho slips out and lands on the apron. Orton charges for The Undertaker, who ducks and as a result, Jericho gets hit and drops to the floor to be eliminated.
The final two men are Randy Orton and The Undertaker. We get to see chokeslams, tombstones and RKO missed and accomplished. While both Orton and UT are knocked out, the steel cage from the previous match starts lowering, and now surrounds the ring. Manu places himself between the door, basically to prevent Orton from being thrown out. After this, the cage is being used as a weapon, with UT being busted open. Undertaler comes back alive and puts Orton in the Snake Eyes position. UT bashes Ortons head with Manus, who falls on the steps and gets knocked out. Orton is at the edge of the door, but he fights off and pulls UT with him, and now theyre both at the edge of the door. They trade punches and just when UT has Orton in a choke, BANG. The cage door is smacked on UT. The camera turns around and sees a returning Ted Dibiase as the culprit. The Undertaker is wobbly. One forearm by Randy Orton later, The Undertaker drops to the floor, leaving with Randy Orton as the winner of the 22nd annual Royal Rumble.
The rest of Legacy leaves so Orton could get the spotlight.
