Introduction

What do we play sports for? Is it for the women that will be all over you when it's all done? Is it for the fame that you'll receive for your great play? Is it for the fun and enjoyment that you receive doing these activities? If it's yes to any of these, then fine, but for most, it's all about the one thing that they wanna do - Win. While it may not be right to sum up sports in a matter of winning and losing, there's no doubt in my mind that watching two evenly matched opponents go at it for the entire duration to prove who is better is the greatest form of entertainment that there is. Better then movies, better then television, better then music. Why? Because it's real. You can't script this. Sure, Rocky may have gotten Adrian's heart in Hollywood, but not everything ends in happy endings. Sports are the one thing on this planet where you can feel the highest of highs after a championship victory and the lowest of lows after a loss, and not even directly affect the result.

Speaking of winning, as you know, each year in every sport we are given a championship matchup featuring the teams that have survived the toll of a playoff run. While sometimes they may not be the 'best' (at least according to some) they've done what they've needed to to get where there at. Now all that's left is to beat one more team, a team that's done the same thing as them, just on the other side of the bracket.

Alas, while there can only be one true winner, this thread is a dedication to both parties involved. You know the saying 'It takes two to tango.'? Well, this thread is a definite example of that where one team doesn't make a great championship matchup. These 10 games/series had it all. Drama. Clutch plays. Defining moments. Maybe even a lil' controversey here and there. Before I begin, as with my last series, sort of my criteria for this list, so to speak:

~More games do not neccessarily mean they will be higher on this list. There is a pretty decent amount of 7 game series' to one game playoffs (in fact it's 7-3 in terms of one game playoffs to 7 game series')
~However, if there are multiple great games it will trump one great game, unless that one great game is a once of a lifetime game.
~Entertainment to myself is very high on my list, but I tried to use it from an objective perspective. In fact, there's only one game on this list that the team that won I cheer for. In fact, more of these teams on the list I hate then like.
~It has to be for a championship. So no 2004 ALCS or 2006 AFC Championship Game. Fought for titles, only.
~It's my list. Don't like it? Let me know why and make your own list.

Now enough of my rambling since this will be posted 9 more times anyways (:suspic:). Time to get down to the list of the 10 Best Championship Matchups since 1990. And, like always, we'll start with #10 on my list:

#10 Best Championship Matchups since 1990
St. Louis Rams vs. Tennessee Titans
Super Bowl XXXIV

"He came up one yard short. The Rams win by a yard!"

While this game, coming in, was all about the Rams greatest show on turf, it was the defense of both teams that shined throughout. Hell, at the end of the first half we were treated to exactly 3 FGs. However, the game contained one of the most wild endings to a Super Bowl in history. After the Titans tied it up at 16 late in the 4th, the Rams, led by league MVP Kurt Warner (who'd also end up being the Super Bowl MVP) landed a quick-strike, 73 yard TD pass to give the Rams a touchdown lead with only 1:48 left. Steve McNair would do his best to try and lead a great two minute drive and send this game into overtime, and 9 plays and 78 yards later, we would be given the biggest tackle in Rams history, and the claim to fame of Mike Jones' (MIKE JONES!) career:

While this game wasn't the offensive explosion that people were accustomed to with the 'Greatest Show on Turf', it was nevertheless a competitive game and clearly in doubt until the final tick of the clock went off. The tackle has become one of the most recognizable plays in NFL history and gives it that extra character of sorts that earns its spot on this list at #10. Plus, it helped Warner's story get out there, and I've always liked him.

#9 Best Championship Matchups since 1990
St. Louis Rams vs. New England Patriots
Super Bowl XXXVI

"I think the Patriots, with the field position they're in, you just have to run the clock out, you have to play for overtime now...

This was my first Super Bowl ever watched, and as you can see it holds a special place in my heart. I was quite young when this happened and didn't know much about football, but I was told the Patriots were a huge underdog (14 point underdogs, in fact) so they were the team I was cheering for. Early on the Patriots jumped out to a surprising lead, even up by 14 in the 4th. But then Kurt Warner showed why he was one of the best QB's during his time with the Rams, getting two key TD's in the 4th (with the first being a sneak and the second being a pass to Ricky Proehl to tie the game with just 1:30 to go. With the Rams tying the game up late everyone figured the Patriots would fold and this game would be the first Super Bowl to ever go to overtime. Alas, the nearly 73,000 in the Superdome and the millions (and MILLIONS) watching all over the world would soon learn of the name of Tom Brady. Starting from their own 16, Brady went and drove his team down the field 53 yards (with no time outs left) and got his kicker into reasonable field goal range. While by no means was it a chip shot attempt, it was well worth the shot. And as you all know, the rest, is history.

#8 Best Championship Matchups since 1990
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Red Wings
Stanley Cup Final 2009

Off the tie up. It comes back to the point. Rafalski the shot, knocked down in front, scramble. Zetterberg a shot, another shot Fought off by Fleury! The horn sounds and the Penguins have won the Stanley Cup!

While I don't wanna bring up this series, due to the final result, it was a good series, that turned great with the last two games of this series, which saw the Wings try to close out and lose both (including game 7 at the Joe) by one goal. A rematch from the year previous, and despite their final standings, these two were the two best teams in all of hockey. The list of superstars on both teams is remarkable. For the Wings you have Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetteberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Marian Hossa, and Chris Osgood. For the Penguins you have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Marc Andre Fleury (along with a slew of role players). It was interesting to see if Crosby would break through the hypothetical "glass ceiling" and get his first cup as a player, or if the Wings would go back to back and continue their run as the best franchise of the past 20 years. What added to the intrigue was the game 7 which, on its own right, was a downright classic for the ages. The last 3 minutes were a flurry of last minute gasps by the Wings, which included one off the top of the post and a great save by Fleury to close it out. In fact, the video I'm providing you will let you relive those last 3 minutes (although the audio is sketchy at times, I tried my best people).

The first two on the list are two of the best Super Bowls ever played and definitely deserve a spot on the list. However, I wouldn't have the Wings/Pens 2009 series on this list, at least not over the games you have at 9 and 10. I know it went seven games but outside of the last two games, all of them were decided by more then one goal and there were zero overtime games in the series. It was a great series but no way is it top 10 deserving considering all of the great championship match ups there have been in sports since 1990. If you want a Stanley Cup series for this list I would have gone Tampa vs Calgary from 2004. Maybe it is on this list and if so then I'll have less of a beef but I still wouldn't have the 2009 finals over your 9 and 10 championship match ups.

Well I thought I would post in here since you asked so nicely, one of the earliest games I can remember when I started to watch football is the Rams/Titans Super Bowl. I was at the family party and everybody expected it to be an offensive shootout. It didn't turn out as expected but it was equally as exciting. The last play as the Titans WR reached out for the endzone line will always be a lasting football memory. However, I don't know if it should be included in the Top 10 Championship Games of All Time. I've thought of 3 games that could be put ahead of it: Rams/Patriots, Giants/Patriots, Cardinals/Steelers. I'm pretty sure 7 other spots could be filled with MLB, NBA, and NHL. Not to take away from it as it was one of the most thrilling football games of all time but I think it misses the cut on the top 10 of all sports list.
