Ten years on---was it a good idea?

Lee

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermod!

The year is 1999, little fourteen year old Lee is excited, the trilogy he's been brought up on for as long as he can remember is getting a new trilogy. Star Wars episode I is on its way to the cinemas, with a cool name "Phantom Menace" opens a layer of intrigue and then we see Darth Maul, I remember reading a quite that said he made Darth Vader look like Mary Poppins.

It gave us a back story that we all know, but over all this trilogy was pretty meh. It gave us Jar Jar Binks, Hayden Christiansen and terrible dialogue. The best moments would be the light saber battles.

All in all though I feel it took a lot away from Luke and his plight. So was the Star Wars prequel trilogy a good idea or a bad one?

In aspects it was a good idea. After watching episodes 1 through 3, you realised that the whole Star Wars saga, from start to finish, was actually the story of Darth Vader's rise and fall, it wasn't about Luke Skywalker. That was pretty cool.
And some of the lightsaber battles were awesome thanks to that advanced digital effects and such.

But when there weren't any lightsabers flying around, it was incredibly dull. It took one of the greatest movie franchises ever and made it so... average. And the acting was mostly crap outside good ol' Ewan McGregor.

But, at the end of the day, it will unfortunately be remembered because it has the Star Wars name. And people will no longer remember Star Wars as arguably the greatest series of movies ever made.

I think like Blade, it's a good idea because it gave a rounded feel to the main story about Vader, and that was what he always wanted to do, he got to complete his vision.

Unfortunately I think the main issues we have are how much continuity is affected, CGI being over the top and just having really irrelevant factors like Jar Jar Binks, podracing, Jar Jar Binks, Watto, Jar Jar Binks and others like Jar Jar Binks.

But looking at Star Wars Episode I and compare it when A New Hope came out, the latter was completely under-rated and expected to drop with unknown actors and became a smash hit; the former was highly anticipated with well known actors being featured and it was just so disappointing to a point. As said the lightsabre battle was epic, I think I'd rank it as the best one in the series (thank you Ray Park), the music was great but so many issues.

In the end it was a good idea to complete the saga, but it just shows how epic the original trilogy is because not even George Lucas could match it when continuing it.

The idea was great, the execution, particularly for the first two, was abysmal.

  1. No-one NO-ONE wants to see the biggest badass in the entire galaxy as a kid, and especially not a kid that says "Yippee".
  2. Jar Jar. Do I really need to say more?
  3. Star Wars, right? Not fucking Intergalactic Poltics
  4. CGI. Argh my God do I hate CGI! It's fooling no-one and totally takes away from the experience
  5. Padme and Anakin. The worst screen romance I've ever seen, ever. It basically consisted of "I love you" "Well I love you more" and repeat
  6. The pure shameless cynicism of the entire project. Looking back now it's quite obvious that these films were nothing but toy adverts
  7. The destruction of Obi Wan Kenobi. Alec Guinness made him awesome, Ewan McGregor turned him into a ******.

I suspect I'm only half finished with my list of why the Star Wars prequels sucked ass.
