Super Sm4sh Bros. Hype Thread

The 1-2-3 Killam

Mid-Card Championship Winner
How does this not exist yet? Certainly there are some super excited Smash Bros fans that, like me, are eagerly anticipating these games!

Months ago I decided I wasn't going to buy into the hype train this year, and that I wasn't going to spend hours spoiling the game for myself, and looking at every detail and YouTube video, but of course that didn't last very long. The game is out in Japan for 3DS, and I've seen the complete roster, and I've been watching the live streams pretty much every day. I'm happy to say I'm still psyched though, maybe even more so knowing how good it looks, and how excited everyone else is that's already playing it.

The current rumor is that Smash Wii U will come out on 11/21 in North America. Still unconfirmed. Given how Brawl was pushed back, I'm not getting excited until Nintendo themselves says "this is when the game is coming out" and the copies start arriving in stores.

So...let's get hyped!

(I'll be appropriately tagging spoiler-material for those that don't want to know more than what has been put out by Nintendo thus far.)

The 3DS version is finalized. Limited demo is out. ScrewAttack.com played it. Love the artstyle and roster choices. Sad Mewtwo was not reinvented for the game though.

I've got the demo. Demo full release is the 18th I believe.

I don't have a 3DS yet. I'll be getting one when I get paid on the 20th. Thinking about holding out a few more days for the Smash Bros. version, but I'm not a huge fan of the special edition systems.

Just a heads up, there's a Super Smash sale going on for the 3DS and Wii U virtual console until 10/2. The sales are different, but until Thursday morning you can get a bunch of Zelda games at discounted prices. $4 Oracles, and $5 Minish Cap is pretty cool. Also $10 off LBW.

Yeah I think this is week 2. Week 1 had punchout etc.

Oracles and Ages don't but yeah you're mostly right.

I don't know, I think you can. There's also The Mysterious Murasame Castle on there which was originally a Japanese exclusive. Great game.

Are VC games linked to the account or to the console? I've heard some complaints about not being able to get games back after broken systems, trade-ins, etc.

The last system I owned was a DSi, and I remember buying a few games, breaking my system and not being able to get them back. It sort of killed digital games for me, but I'm also out of the house enough that I don't want to drag my whole physical collection around. Good to know it's been more or less fixed.

To be fair, once October 3 and November 21 roll around, I'll have the only two 3DS games I need for the next two years probably.

I'm gonna copy/paste bits of something I did on Reddit today. Here's the actual LINK if you want it. Hehe...Link...

It's in response to the complaints about clones in SSB4 and how it's not going to be as much of an upgrade as Brawl was.

There were 12 characters in SSB, 25 characters in Melee, 39 in Brawl and 51 in SSB4. Figures for the last two games include Pokemon Trainer as 3, and the Mii Fighters as 3. For some perspective, that's a 108.3% increase from SSB to Melee, a 56% increase from Melee to Brawl, and a 30.8% increase from Brawl to SSB4.

In terms of cloning, it's true that SSB4 is tied with Melee in having a total of SEVEN clones and semi-clones. However, in Melee a full SIX were considered actual clones (with only slight differences), with ONE character considered a semi-clone (meaning they have enough differences to be set apart). With SSB4 there are still SEVEN altogether, but only two are direct clones (Dark Pit & Lucina) while FIVE characters are semi-clones, and almost all of them have been given slight adjustments to differentiate themselves further. For the record, Brawl had the best cloning stats, with FIVE semi-clones and ZERO direct clones.

So let's redo the figures taking out ALL of the direct clones, leaving in the semi-clones. That's 11, 19, 39, and 49 characters respectively. That's a 72% increase, a 105.3% increase, and a 25.6% increase, respectively. As the number of characters increases, it takes a lot more to maintain those ratios. For instance, there would have to be 41 new characters (or one giant Ridley) in SSB4, none of which can be direct clones, to maintain the same growth that there was from Melee to Brawl. The roster would, at minimum, need to be 80 characters large.

Hype.

I bought a cover for my 2DS that changes the shoulder buttons to triggers for comfort. Its still a pain in the ass to play compared to console games like Star Fox.

So I was weary about getting the Smash edition 3DS because I think they're specials are hit and miss. But I got to take one out and look at it at Gamestop today, and instantly fell in love with it. It's super glossy - probably the most glossy system they've ever made - which can be a pro and a con, depending on your personal preference. The characters on the cover really pop out, and the Smash logo on the back was a nice addition. No custom stuff on the inside, but I prefer it that way.

Got a ton of Club Nintendo points too, because I still had the PIN# from my last system laying around.

Picked up a copy of Pokemon X today, so that's how the next two weeks will be spent until Smash comes out. Anybody have friend codes...or however these newfangled contraptions work?

Yeah the shoulders are the things I hope the new model improves along with the sound. Playing the Smash demo a little and the amount you have to use L & R is a lot more than the other games I've played, yet there's not much "give" in them; seems like it's hardly being pressed.

Also Killam you got the special edition? Fair play.

Anyway, clone or not, it matters not one bit to me if I can play as honorary niece Lucina. I would've liked a few differences to come through compared to Marth (Lucy can use spears and promote and reclass & stuff). Mainly though, I'm excited for Robin and Shulk. Yes.

So I spent a few hours with the demo today. All my fears for the 3DS - primarily system performance related and size - are gone. It gets a bit small when playing with 4 players, but it's not unplayable or even enjoyable by any means.

Here's my thoughts on the 5 available characters:

Mario: He's Mario. Everything feels different because the controls are more sensitive and the game is closer to Melee speed, but he's Mario.

Link: They'll given him a new running slash, which is just...a running slash. It gives him more mobility and kill potential, which I love. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they cut the cooldown on his chain grab, because it feels so much better. Basically Link is back to being a killing machine, IMO.

Pikachu: I'm not sure if anything is different about him, but I also have never been a huge Pika-player.

Mega Man: He's not traditional, and I'm really bad with him. He's the kind of character that, for the more advanced player, you're gonna wreck face when you've learned how to properly utilize his kit. I'm still not sure how to do everything the level 9 computers were doing, which is weird because I feel like I've used all the button combos.

Villager: AMAZING. Awesome Kong levels of Awesome. His B alone makes him my new favorite. Basically you just steal shit. Bomb on the map? Yoink. Megaman razor? Yoink? Pokeball? Hide yo kids, hide yo wives. You steal whatever you want, then bring it back to use whenever you want, pending you don't die. Plus you can smash plants on people, plant trees, fly with balloons, drop bowling balls on their faces, and that's not even getting into his regular A attacks. Seriously, without playing any of the other new characters, he's my current favorite characters in the game.

I'm curious to know if there will be an option to rearrange the buttons because I'm not a fan about the grab command. In Brawl and Melee it was the Z button but now it's gotta be done like the N64 by pressing both block buttons.
