Summerslam 2013 - WWE Championship Match: John Cena VS Daniel Bryan

The Eighties

Forward Thinking Nostalgist

Since WWE have made it official I thought we might as well get the thread under way!

I've not looked forward to a WWE title match this much since MITB 2011, I think it's going to be a fantastic match with a very uncertain outcome.

I cannot express my feelings on how happy I am about this match. Holy shit balls what a fucking main event this is gonna be. Not since MITB 2011 has a title match had such expectations and a feel to it. I fully expect this match to be as equally as good as MITB 2011 if not better. (Daniel Bryan can make this match better IMO).

This match i hope is going to be one of those that people talk about for generations to come. I cant pick a winner in this one i truly cant! But oh so looking forward to this encounter..

I'd like to see them pull the trigger on Daniel Bryan here.

As I've seen it said and written countless times, Bryan is the most over man in the company. They had the perfect crowd tonight for the 'Choose Your Opponent' segment, with Cena's character staying the course and going with the crowd's pick. Ideally, they would have gotten there like they did with Punk vs. Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and that's with Bryan winning a No. 1 Contender's match. But if anyone has 'earned it', it's Bryan, as he's beaten seemingly every other top contender, so he's the logical choice.

The build to this should be interesting. Rumors are circulating that they're going to use the Divas reality show and the real life relationships between the Bella twins and Bryan/Cena as part of the build. I'm fine with this, but ultimately, this should be about the match. I still think back to the night the Nexus debuted, with Bryan beating the crap out of Cena, shouting, "You're not better then me."

It's something I've wanted to find out since. And because of Bryan's rapid ascension, we get the chance. And I think Bryan wins here in one heck of a match. He's the hottest guy in the company, if you're not going to pull the trigger on him now, then when?

The wild card here is Randy Orton. He was quite heelish in his interaction with Cena tonight, calling him stupid and telling him he'll never see it coming. But what better way to continue Bryan and Orton's mini-feud where Bryan beat Orton then by having Bryan beat Cena in a 30 minute war, only for Orton to cash in on an exhausted Bryan.

So many possibilities. I'll be good with any result, to be honest, as this should be one heck of a match. But my gut says Bryan beats Cena.

I never thought I'd see the day. John Cena VS Daniel Bryan, for the WWE Championship at Summerslam. Wow. Glad to see WWE is giving the fans the match they want, and the explosion from the crowd, when Cena finally announced Bryan's name after the teasing was amazing.

Definitely expecting a long and hard fought wrestling clinic between these two, with a white hot crowd going apeshit the entire time. Of course, If Cena wins, the complaints about the Super-Cena bullshit will come pouring in, but there's a chance Cena could lose.

The moment of Bryan, being the underdog and grabbing the brass ring by winning the most prestigious championship in pro wrestling could be ruined by a Randy Orton cash-in. Now that he has the briefcase, a full-blown heel turn for Randy Orton is coming. 98% of the time, whoever holds the case is a heel, or turns heel by cashing-in. Orton and Bryan have already had some good matches together, and Orton stealing Bryan's moment of glory will turn the fans against him, giving Bryan stronger support from the fans in the process.

On the other hand, I can't see the same effect from Orton cashing-in on Cena. Cena's reactions are split down the middle more often than not. And well, let's face it, Orton taking the title away from Cena would bring a positive pop out of the live crowd, reminiscent of Edge taking the strap away from Cena after the Chamber match.

Picking a winner is too tricky. I mean, yeah, it's possible WWE is hell bent on having Cena go into 2014 as WWE Champion. BUT if they're going to pull the trigger on Daniel Bryan as WWE Champion, the time and place is at Summerslam. With his momentum and the stage of Summerslam in August, I can't picture another scenario that would be the ideal place and time for Bryan to become champion.

Regardless of the cash-ins or not, I'm pumped for this match. It'll be interesting to see what goes on last at Summerslam: this match or Punk VS Lesnar. It's tricky, because Lesnar has main evented almost every pay per view since his return (with the exception of Wrestlemania 29 of coruse), and the crowd should be going nuts during both matches, and you don't want to have another Lesnar VS Triple H dead crowd scenario at Summerslam.

If I'm WWE I'd book Bryan in a way that would make him look as credible as possible and set him up for a feud right after Summerslam. I'd have Bryan win cleanly over Cena, then have Orton cash in and screw Bryan ultimately turning Randy heal. This would finally help Randy become what he's best at again and set up a storyline involving Bryan and him. I would ultimately have Bryan beat Orton at NOC putting him insanely over beating both Cena and Orton Cleanly for the WWE Title. #THEFUTURE

This match was the rumored main event for Summerslam for quite a while now. I guess its one of the perks of having Cena as a brother in law.. I kid, I kid. Daniel Bryan is the perfect guy for the match and honestly I think this will live up to people's expectations. I dont think, however, that Daniel Bryan will be walking out of Summerslam the world champion. Either Cena wins clean, which is something I wouldn't advice since it could potentially hurt Bryan's recent hot streak, or Orton cashes in on the new WWE Champion. Orton is a bit of a wild card here, and while I'm sure they'll make him ambiguous enough during the Summerslam build so that the fans forget that Daniel's dreams can be crushed in a matter of seconds, but lets be realistic. Orton is long overdue for a heel turn, and his fandom is something he hasn't been able to escape at all. To turn a guy like Orton heel you really do need a grand stage and a great opponent. Making Dbry vs Cena at Summerslam is a way to get both the IWC and the Cena fans, probably the two largest fan bases in wrestling today, watching. Everyone watching as Orton comes in, crushes any hope of Daniel Bryan being WWE Champion, and walking out with "Cena's belt" is a sure fire way to make Randy the most over heel in the business. If they do this right, they can avoid burying Bryan, keep Cena in the title picture, and make Orton the heel he is meant to be.

I would book it as they will keep it as a Face vs. Face fued and after a 20-40 min match, an exhausted bryan pins cena. They shake hands and Cena goes in the back as bryan is celebrating and walking to the back he faces the crowd and randy orton attacks from behind and rko's him plays to the crowd with the breifcase and picks bryan up and starts to drag him to the ring and cena comes out and takes out orton making the save and avoiding the contract cash in. Cena's picks up bryan and they walk out together cena yelling this beards earned his celebration.

Orton's furious in the ring, Heel turn complete but he still has the briefcase. Setting up Orton vs Cena at the next ppv. Money.

Pulls the string on Daniel Bryan and gives him his chance to shine. Keeps him face. Can keep the weak link story line going, have him in a fighting champion story line. Hell have him put the title on the line on three straight raws against 3 different opponents he wins them still feels like a weak link has a fatal four way next ppv. Money. keeps other talent elevated.

I CANNOT WAIT.

For all the hate Vince was getting for "not believing in Daniel Bryan" or for not giving him the MITB briefcase, Vince proves one thing he really has always done and yet no one seems to truly recognize: he does what is best for business. And believe me, Vince is no idiot. When he hears those ovations and chants week in and week out, how could he really ignore Daniel Bryan? All he heard was MONEY.

I was planning on going to the Raw before SummerSlam, as I live very close to Sacramento, but I'm now thinking of saving up more money to make the trip to LA. Two blockbuster main events. This is shaping up to be potentially one of the best SummerSlams of all time. This has a very 2002 feel to it with the highly anticipated championship match (Rock-Lesnar/Cena-Bryan) and the huge personal grudge match (HBK-HHH/Punk-Lesnar). I'm expecting the build-up to be phenomenal and for these two matches to tear the house down.

Honestly, the first time in a LONG time that I've looked forward this much to a Cena Championship match. Usually, we know that he'll face somebody, beat them and that's that. Just like what happened with Mark Henry on Sunday night. However, for the first time, I genuinely cannot tell you who might win this. If Bryan wins the WWE Championship at Summerslam, the reaction will be one of the most amazing things you'll ever witness. If you're at the event, it will probably be the greatest thing you'll ever take part in. And for us watching on TV, well y'know... same thing, just on a smaller scale.

The fact that Cena has handpicked his opponent and not taken the easy route (It's Cena, why would he?) shows that he has respect for Bryan and that he knows he deserves the title shot he's given him. The next few weeks, we're going to see a lot of promos about respect, but we're also going to see a lot of Bryan & Cena trying to outdo each other in matches. They both have huge submission finishers, Bryan's definitely the more popular out of the two, having gone through three names so far. But Cena does have the power move, the Attitude Adjustment. It could be the game-changer in this one. That's not to say though that D-Bry doesn't have strikes in his arsenal. His kicks, missile dropkick and just sheer aggression could be enough to lead Cena right into the NO! Lock, but who knows?

What I see though when I think of this match, is the reception. For once, Cena was respected last night by the crowd when he chose Bryan. They didn't boo him, they just cheered throughout the entire decision. Hell, they even hung onto Cena running through his choices. They knew what was coming, but they played along with it. Daniel Bryan is possibly the most over superstar in (insert years here) and that's working to his advantage. That, paired up with his highly impressive wrestling skills means that he's in the main event once more where he belongs. The crowd will be on his side and if the people backstage realise what it is that everybody really wants, they'll be on his side as well. Next week, expect some kind of McMahon promo about it, HHH/Steph mentioned about their father not liking said decision, I'm sure we'll try to see him put a stop to it, but in the end... Bryan will face Cena.

Whether Randy Orton cashes in after the match or not is yet to be seen. Remember, he has a YEAR to cash in, why does everyone assume he'll do it so soon? Either way, I see Daniel Bryan WINNING the WWE Championship at Summerslam. If Orton cashes in, I hope Cena helps Bryan retain so early on, leading to an Orton/Cena feud that isn't for the title. But if Orton wins it, then I suspect Bryan will win it back sooner rather than later, simply to prove he's the best, beating Orton & Cena in quick succession.

Prediction: Daniel Bryan becomes the WWE Champion.

I kinda sorta got a little bit giddy here. Based on what Cena said and how much he hyped the match as something that the fans wanted to see, which is very much true, I'm expecting an outright classic showing from these two at SummerSlam.

Over the coming weeks, I'm hoping that they portray Cena still being in serious mode and taking Bryan seriously while Bryan shows off that scrappy passion that's helped bring him this far.

Like a lot of people, I'd love to see Bryan defeat Cena for the title. With Randy Orton having the MITB briefcase, however, I think that he'll cash in at SummerSlam on either Cena or Bryan. Bryan is extremely hot right now and Orton cashing on in Bryan after he just won the title from Cena of all people would be a phenomenal way to ultimately turn him heel. A threeway feud between Orton, Cena & Bryan over the title has money written all over it. Orton's ruthlessness vs. Cena's power & will to win vs. Bryan's skill & passion will deliver ratings and ppv buys.

Great setup for Summerslam, and I too agree: with the way DBry is over right now, he actually even has a chance of beating Cena (John freakin' Cena) for the WWE title. And I also agree: What a sight it would be to behold.

The way I would like to see it happen, of course, would have to be after an exhausting 30 minute match, with and ending where both guys slap on their respective submission finishers, the other reverses it... until finally Bryan gets Cena in the Yes/No-Lock in the middle of the ring, Cena is holding on for dear life... and eventually actually taps out. There's no way to get Bryan over more than that, than having Cena - the guy who NEVER taps - submit to his finisher. That'd be reminiscent about Benoit's title win back at WM 20, versus Triple H & HBK (yeah, back when the WHC still meant something).

I'm still a bit doubtful if they really are going to pull the trigger at SS with Bryan, or if they're more looking into another Cena vs Orton feud... but I agree; now's the time for Bryan, and hopefully WWE realizes that too.

OMG I would loose my shit, I got Tickets back in April for Night of Champions For me and My 6&7 year old and I love Db I stated watching Wrestling again about a year and a half ago and DB is One of the Few current guy's I really like.
Only problem With Night of champions is the DETROIT crowd Is kinda EHH

This match will be great, as everyone has said already. The build-up could be a bit lame with the Bellas involved, but I think some promos between Cena and Bryan will be a lot of fun. What I'm most interested in, however, is the booking on the night of the match.

Now, Bryan is very over. He's on the cusp of doing what CM Punk did a couple years ago and cementing his place as one of the very top guys. Orton used to be in that position, but got lost somewhere along the way. Cena has had a half-decent title run, but he needs to start putting younger guys over to take over for him when he eventually leaves. He's been going pretty much non-stop for 11 years, and he's 36, the same age Edge was when his injuries caught up with him. Obviously, he's still got a few years in him, but WWE still has to build for the future.

Anyway, at Summerslam, WWE can kill two birds with one stone. If I was the booker, I would have Bryan make Cena tap out after a hellacious match, where both guys are in a bad state afterwards. Have Orton try to cash in, but get rolled up by Bryan and lose. Then Orton snaps and beats the hell out of Bryan, turning himself heel. Bryan gets really over while keeping the WWE title and Orton becomes heel and takes his feud with Bryan to the next level. I just think it would be good television.

Okay am I the only person here who just sees the silliness in this match.... CENA just tapped out the worlds strongest man..... Defeated a 250 lbs ripped monster...... Cleanly pinned the ROCK and yet I am supposed to believe that a 5'7 200 lbs guy can beat him.... Not only do you guys want him beaten but 2 lose CLEAN.... LOL LMAO LMMFAO!!! I love U guys.... I really do... When its an internet favorite on the card REALITY AND PERCEPTION should just be throw out the window... This guy is a welterweight vegan at best.... NOW ACCORDING TO U GUYS EVERYONE I HAVE MENTIONED IN THIS POST IS ON ROIDS EXCEPT THE GUY WHO U WANT 2 BEAT EVERYONE CLEAN..... LOL LMAO LMMFAO!!! I just dont understand y'all.... As far as him being over so is Fandango... Mark Henry.... and yes for a while RYBACK before they DESTROYED him..... I keep saying this and y'all are missing the point only WRESTLING FAN WATCH DB.... He does not have cross over appeal at all.... People see the ROCK, CENA, Austin and HOGAN and they see a larger than life character... Seeing DB in the airport and people wouldn't even stop... THEY WOULDNT NOTICE HIM IF HE WAS WEARING THE WWE BELT AND TONGUE KISSING BOTH BELLAS..... Yet U guys still gush over him like he is the 2nd coming.... LOL! Its just funny.... Well I hate the match... Hate the concept and I HOPE CENA PINS HIM IN UNDER 5 MINUTES.... Nope I hate CENA but damn he at least LOOKS like a CHAMPION to the general public... I can tell that most of you guys have never been neither an athlete nor in a REAL FIGHT... Otherwise you would understand why this match is RIDICULOUS!!!!

The ending of last night's Raw was just awesome. That arena was coming unglued when Bryan was in the middle of the ring chanting "Yes!" I'm usually pretty damn jaded when it comes to wrestling. There's not much that is going to get an emotional rise out of me anymore. Last night, I was marking out completely.

Truly amazing how Bryan worked his butt off through both promos and in-ring matches to get to where he is today.

As for my prediction for Summer Slam: I think Bryan forces the tap on Cena in the Main Event, and Orton cashes in the briefcase and takes the title and completes his heel turn the following night on Raw, not at the Summer Slam event itself (nothing telegraphs a heel turn more than a suddenly dark and ominous looking beard, Randy). I figure they're going to give Bryan his moment at the PPV, even if they're going to take the title off him shortly after.

I'm thinking this is your week on the placebo...

As for the match, I'm sure what transpires inside the ring will be very great. If Cena wins, people are going to shit, seeing as it's clear people think DB has a legit chance here. I think he does. But I also wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of shenanigans so the feud continues one or two more PPV's. That'll still piss a bunch of people off, but everything pisses the IWC off, so I guess it's not any different than normal. As for a prediction, I'm currently going with the safe bet of Cena, but the coming weeks could change that.

First off, I actually disagree with most people here. I think that the kind of moment that everyone is being talked about should be saved for wrestlemania.

There's an argument to be made for cashing in on Bryan's hotness right now, but the ELITE wrestlers are never more popular than when they are chasing the championship. Austin and Punk are the most obvious examples here but there are plenty of others. Bryan has only really been chasing the belt for a short period of time so if you can find a way to keep the belt off Bryan and keep his momentum (i.e. not lose clean to Cena) then I think you do it.

Here's my solution. Have Cena/Bryan have an epic match at summerslam with the finish some version of the classic both are pinned, both tap out. While the referees are sorting things out Orton comes down and cashes in the briefcase setting up an impromptu 3-way match. Orton pins Cena with Bryan diving to break up the pin and just missing. Then you have Bryan chase Orton for the next 6 months (winning the rumble) while freeing up Cena to fight Henry, or the Shield etc...

Bryan keeps his momentum because he isn't pinned and now has a focused, stated goal of chasing the belt. Cena has already jobbed to Orton so he doesn't lose anything and Orton cashes in the briefcase in a somewhat unique way.

They had the perfect crowd tonight for the 'Choose Your Opponent' segment, with Cena's character staying the course and going with the crowd's pick.

Yeah, well, I still say this is accomplished by sprinkling "claques" throughout the crowd; which are big-mouthed people interspersed in the audience who get people chanting in the direction pre-ordained. WWE can scarcely leave things to chance, winding up having the crowd chanting: "Sting!" or "Evan Bourne!"

And, especially since we had been reading in the dirt sheets this past week that Cena vs. Bryan was expected, there wasn't much question when Cena took center ring to make his announcement, was there?

However, unlike the Cena-Henry match we just saw at MITB, there is legitimate uncertainty as to who wins a Cena-Bryan match.....or, what might very well turn out to be a series of PPV contests between the two. I don't see Daniel coming out on top and winning the belt from Cena.....yet, that's exactly what they might do. It could be the whole "Vince McMahon doesn't believe in Daniel Bryan as an attraction" could be a ruse to set this whole thing up.

There's a lot that will happen before Summerslam in the build-up to this match, but I can't help picking John Cena to come out on top....if not directly at Summerslam, then in the overall series between these two.

Wait a minute. Everyone expected John Cena to select Daniel Bryan as his opponent?? Yeah, me too, but I was thinking of a different direction.

Being that we’re talking about the Main Event of the second biggest Pay Paer View of the year, I was hoping John Cena was going to select World Champion, Alberto Del Rio, and make it a unification match for the Undisputed WWE World Championship. Oh well!!

I hope John Cena wins again, but this time, against Daniel Bryan, I wouldn’t mind seeing new YES! And NO! side plates.

I am excited over this match and can not wait for it. I wonder if Vince Mcmahon will come out and talk more about Bryan not drawing and during the match use the Shield to stop him for getting the title, and start Bryan on some Crusade to for revenge against Mcmahon

Seeing the picture of Danial Bryan and John Cena together; knowing this match will happens gives me one word. Goosebumps.

I don't care who wins. Ok, I want Bryan to win. This is the person opportunity time to solidify someone as a bonafide main eventer. Bryan being in the WWE Title picture in and of itself is a step up from being in the WHC picture. Main eventing Summerslam is Byrans biggest moment to date, moreso than being WHC; even bigger than walking into Mania as the WHC. If Bryan wins... I will mark the hell out similar to how I marked out when Punk beat Cena for the WWE Championship in Chicago.

I won't be one of those "If Cena wins I riot." As long as these two put on a great match, they have the potential to do so. That's all I'll care about.

I think because everyone is assuming Bryan will win the belt, and Orton will cash in, WWE will have Cena beat Bryan at Summer Slam. They're probably going to feud over the course of a few PPVs leading into the Fall with either: Bryan eventually winning the title only have Orton cash in MITB and take the belt OR Bryan will lose to Cena a couple times only to have Orton cash in and steal the title from Cena, thus continuing the DB-Orton feud.

WWE typically tries to go against what the fans think or want at least at first, so expect Cena to keep the belt at Summer Slam.

Also: They should add the stipulation that if Bryan loses, he has to shave the beard :)

I loved Raw last night and I'm glad it went down the way it did. They didn't mentioned Daniel Bryan at all or show him at all and during the end he was hiding behind everyone and the crowd was going crazy for Cena to pick him. It really shows how popular he has gotten. I'm sure WWE knew the crowd would do this and I think it went better without having Daniel Bryan in a match.

I'm thinking Daniel Bryan wins the WWE Championship and then Randy Orton cashes in to win the title that same night.

Either that or John Cena retains the WWE Championship and then Randy Orton cashes in to win the title that same night.

For some reason, I don't see Daniel Bryan holding the WWE Championship for long at all. It's likely for WWE to kill momentum by doing things like this.

I hope I'm wrong though and would love to see what Blade predicted with Daniel Bryan making John Cena tap out and then rolling up Randy Orton who tried to cash in. I like that idea.
