Sum 41 - New Album Pledge

Now, before I start this, I've only recently become a real fan of Sum 41's music & I was really getting into it, then Deryck Whibley ended up almost dead in hospital.

However, earlier today Sum 41 (Deryck, Cone & Tom) announced that their is a new album on the way & there is a pledging website where you can donate an amount of money (your decision on how much) & then you receive a download of the album plus other rewards, depending on how much money you donate.

Signed drumsticks, skins, handwritten lyrics sheets, disposable camera's loaded with photos & test pressings are already sold out, with other rewards on the way out too.

In the last few hours, it's seeming pretty popular & it seems like Sum 41's fans haven't disappeared from the band. I've already donated my £23 which guarantees me a signed copy of the album from the band. No, I haven't heard any of the songs but I want to give it a go & jump in/take a risk.

You can check it out yourself - http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/sum41 & get involved in making the album successful, but I came here to ask;

What are your thoughts on Sum 41? Also what do you believe their new album will be like?

I honestly thought that these guys had given it up a long time ago. And given that most people wouldn't know them from Adam, at this point, is it really worth their time trying to make a come back? I don't think so.

Personally, I like a few of their songs but that was a by gone era and music has changed so much since Sum 41 were that big of a deal. When they emerged, they really capitalised on the growing popularity if their genre of music. Honestly, it was more "right time, right place" than anything else. Like I said, however, I did like a few of their songs and would listen to them again in a push. But my music preferences have changed over the course of time also. And truthfully, I don't think that genre of music has a place on it anymore.

I look to the last Blink 182 for a bit of insight here and it doesn't fill me with confidence. I was always a much bigger Blink fan that and Sum 41 fan and I didn't like Blink's last album beyond the first released track. Sometimes reunions can be a good thing but other times it just smacks of desperation and money grabbing. And although I am sure the sentiment from the fans will give them the dollars they so desire, I think it will eventually run out of steam when the album invariably flops.

I loved All Killer No Filler. "Fat Lip" and "Motivation" in particular. Listened to that album all the time in high school. I also liked their contribution to the Spiderman Soundtrack, "What We're All About". After that I didn't really listen to much of the other stuff up until Underclass Hero got released in 2007, I ended up buying it as an impulse buy due to the cool looking album cover more than anything else. It exceeded all my expectations, so no regrets there. Another great album. I'm not entirely sure if I'd get this new album but if it ends up being anything like All Killer No Filler or Underclass Hero.... I might go buy it. Some of those rewards sound cool. I wouldn't say I'm big enough of a fan of the band that I'd seek any of the rewards, however it's a great idea for them to generate more interest in the new product. I commend Sum 41 for doing this. Hope this new album and this rewards project both do well.

Wow, Sum 41 was one of my favorite bands in high school, and up until I saw this thread I probably hadn't thought about them in at least five years.

To be honest, upon reading their wiki moments ago, I have no motivation (see what I did there?) to hear any new material. As Dave said, the band is simply from a by gone era, and they failed to adapt, like a similar band such as Green Day has. Furthermore, when a band changes lineup, the decision to keep the original band name is a fine line. Sum 41 ended for me when Dave Baksh, who I believe to be the most talented member of the original band, left.

Nonetheless, Sum41 was a significant fraction of my music in adolescence, and I hope their enduring fans enjoy it.

Also, Tom Thacker joined? Weird.

I'm really surprised by this news, because as far as I was aware Deryk Whibley was still struggling to recover from being hospitalised due to alcohol abuse. I never expected to hear that he was going to be making music again! I mean, the guy was a MESS, and had to relearn how to walk- and that was only in April!

It seems that this comeback is something that Whibley is determined to do, as it will be a kind of motivation for him to stay clean and sober and get back to doing what he loves, which will be great for him. I hope it succeeds. I really enjoyed "All Killer No Filler" back in high school, I remember getting the train into Manchester to buy "Fat Lip" on single when it first came out, wearing my Sum 41 hoody. However, apart from 1 or 2 tracks since then, I haven't enjoyed their later work.

I do hope the loyal Sum 41 fans help them reach their target, and the album comes out.

They were quite popular when I was in High School, wasn't ever really a fan - never got into pop punk, I was more of a nu metal kid at the time and not ashamed to admit it.

Still I'm surprised they don't have a record deal, I know they fell off a bit in the States and Europe but they were still somewhat popular in Canada, Japan and a few other places. During the height of their fame they were on an independent label so perhaps that's more the mindset they have and prefer that to a major label situation

I'm honestly surprised these guys are still around, they were huge when I was in elementary and middle school, but kinda fell out when I got to high school. I loved All Killer No Filler, Does This Look Infected, and Chuck. Underclass Hero, I didn't like as much. There were still some good songs but I couldn't enjoy it as much as the other three albums. Same thing with Screaming Bloody Murder, which came around the time I graduated high school
