STREAK ENDING:Starrcade 1998/Wrestlemania 27

stmarks2002

Occasional Pre-Show
The date was Dec, 27, 1998 and it was WCW's biggest PPV of the year. What happened that night; Kevin Nash ended Goldberg's 150-0 streak and beat him for the WCW title. How: a security officer dressed Scott Hall got on the apron and tasered Goldberg into a jacknife powerpomb from Nash 1-2-3 streak over. Where am I going with this, here it is:

Kevin Nash was a part of the creative/writing team in WCW and had control of his character and what happened with him. His best friend (Scott Hall) effected the outcome of the match. Lets go to WWE now. Triple H has 100% creative control over his character and essentially is running things. With that in mind, do you see or think that a Starrcade 98 like swerve could happen during the HHH/Taker streak match at Mania this year (HBK and Trips being best friends and HBK/Taker history)?

Keep in mind a few things: Nash is under contract with the WWE now and is having a WM27 party in Atlanta this weekend. Scott Hall will more than likely be there; HBK telling Trips he has no chance of ending the streak. 4/5 of the Kliq will be in Georgia for mania.

What are yall's thoughts about this?

It isn't ending. Number one it would be bad for business, as many people order Mania just to see Taker's match. Also, Triple H has too much respect for the Undertaker's legacy and he probably knows that he should not be the one to end the streak if it were to end, whereas Nash didn't understand that same thing.

Taker is going 19-0.

I don't think that happens. It would be stupid for Triple H to do that. The backlash would be way worse than Starcade was.

I think there will be interference from Shawn (though who he takes out is the question) but I don't see Undertaker losing the streak.

yea, agreed! No way the Undertaker's streak is going to end. He will carry on until he reaches 20-0 then he will retire. Nobody is big enough to beat Taker's streak, it will remain alive forever.

It is possible. Like you said, HHH has complete control of his character and is in the creative team. Now I don't think that the streak should be ended by HHH because his career is almost over. I do think that Undertaker's streak should end but by someone who could bennefit from it, like a shocking heel turn for Cena, or maybe the underdog Miz.

However, I see HHH vs Undertaker going to a five-star match at WrestleMania, but in the end Undertaker will win.

True but this is the Undertaker we are talking about, thats one guy HHH really has no control over, why? Undertaker is viewed as McMahon's most loyal worker. He stayed when the company nearly went bust rather than jumping ship to WCW.
The streak won't end, they have been building this up for years (seeing it was first mentioned against Sid at WM13). They had the chance with Kane and he didn't want to do it, nobody else would look credible doing it... although I like the angle they showed the Undertaker is aging and more vulnerable with each pasting year.

I like the thought you put into it but as everyone else stated. It would be terrible for business to have HHH go over Taker. What would HHH get out of it? The guy has held more titles than an Atlantic City prostitute.

Second: WWE would not have Scott Hall involved at all. Which is what I got from you, that some how the kliq would be reformed? In the shadows of what happened to Jeff Hardy there is NO WAY WWE would risk a guy like Scott Hall again at this stage in the game.

Also, you would miss out on another huge payday for Taker/WWE. The streak of 20-0 would be awesome. 20-0 looks so much more impressive than 19-0, therefore I agree with the above statement that Taker will retire at 20-0. Why cut it off at 19? Taker is old, sure but he barely does tv shows as is. Look for HBK to somehow inadvertently cost HHH the match. It is no dq, so something shady will happen.

These are ALL great responses; I think Taker will win and will go out at 20-0 as well. This topic was just something that popped in my head on the way to work this morning. I do think that IF the streak was EVER ended that Cena would be the one to do it; I've been saying it since Mania 23 after beat HBK and Trips the year before. By the way, I don't believe that Scott will be allowed anywhere near or inside the arena and I was speaking in terms of HBK effecting the match.

I look at it like this...

Taker's streak is 99% secure. I can't give the full hundred because if a star were to come along in the next two years with a big enough push, there could be a "passing of the torch" so to speak as it seems popular these days to have a wrestler retire with a loss (HBK, FLAIR). 20-0 does sound awesome, two decades undefeated. But if done correctly, a rising star could be pushed into superstardom by ending the streak and ending Undertaker once and for all.

I could totally see a buried alive match or a Casket match as Undertaker's send off where he is buried forever. I understand the "bad for business" idea but if it's his last Mania and last match, it would actually work well because then we will still be watching the guy who can forever say he is the only one. Just like Jericho as the first Undisputed champion ever, but I think this would be even bigger. Again, this is all dependant upon them doing it right and not screwing it up like so many other lost opportunities.

@Matty- that actually sounds like a better send off. Have him go 20-0 at Mania and then lose a Buried Alive Match at Survivor Series since that is where it all started for him.

That's not what I really meant though. I think for Taker, it has to be win or lose at Wrestlemania, and most likely it will be when he is going for 20-0 as others have said.
