Stone Temple Pilots

Hollywood Naitch

The current reigning and defending
As one of the biggest grunge bands of the 1990s, Scott Weiland and Stone Temple Pilots have always drawn opinions from both ends of the spectrum. Some critics say "Core" and "Purple" are two of the best albums of the decade and the grunge era, while others consistently criticised the band for a lack of originality and for sounding like a blatant Pearl Jam rip-off, especially on "Plush" their biggest hit from "Core" the album. One magzine actually voted them "Band of the Year" and "Worst Band of the Year" in the same year!

I personally do not care if Weiland does sound like Eddie Vedder on some tracks, just as it doesnt lessen my enjoyment of Creed that Scott Stapp sounds like a Vedder clone on certain songs. I much preferred STP's earlier material, before they changed their style on later releases to go for a softer sound. Their first two albums are phenomenal in my opinion, definitely two of my favourites, especially Core. They have sold a hell of a lot of records, so despite alot of critcism they obviously have (or had) a very large fan base.

I would rank Sex Type Thing and Dead & Bloated are their two greatest tracks, check them out!

After the band broke up, Weiland became the frontman of Velvet Revolver with Slash and Duff McKagen and released 2 really good albums before quitting the band, and he has also made a couple of solo albums, which I do not really like.

Now reunited, STP released a self titled album last year, which I bought but am still not convinced about, it is nothing like "Core" or any of their heavier stuff, it is really quite varied and 60s/70s sounding on alot of tracks, which continues STP's varied output after their more traditional grunge beginnings.

So, what are your opinions on Stone Temple Pilots?

Are you a fan? Are you not?

Do you prefer their earlier material or they more experimental/varied later offerings?

Do you think Scott should have sorted out his differences with Velvet Revolver and remained in the band?

What are your favourite STP tracks?

Its funny becuase I'm a fan and I dont even know it. When I'm driving, I listen to nothing but rock music and the station I listen to always plays STP. Most of the time, I find myself singing along and knowing almost all the words to the songs. Outside of hearing them on the radio, I dont really listen to them. But thats my fault because I love when I hear some STP on the radio.

Do you prefer their earlier material or they more experimental/varied later offerings?

Most of the songs I know and love are earlier songs off of the first three albums (Core, Purple and Tiny Music). I cant say I have even heard some of the more recent work. I probably have though and just dont know it.

What are your favourite STP tracks?

Plush and Sex Type Thing are great. The acoustic version of Plush is probably one of the better acoustic covers I have heard.

Another great one is Vasoline. It has this sound about it that I cant even really explain. But I think my favorite song is Big Empty. I love the jazzy/blues sound of the verses and how well it mixes with the heavier choruses.

I'm definitely a fan. I have all their albums except their self-titled most recent album which I thought aside from a few songs was utter crap. I also got to see them live at "Rock on the Range" in 2008 and they put on a great show playing nearly every song I wanted to hear and Dean DeLeo, one of my favorite guitarists, was as always amazing.

When I first got into them which was when I was learning to drive........... around 2002, the first album I got was Core and had a hard time believing anything could top it. Actually kinda funny, when my driving instructor picked me up I asked him if I could bring an album along I had just bought (Core) and he was like sure. So we're driving and the first song ends and he says, "Do you mind if we listen to that first song again?" (Dead and Bloated) I thought that was hilarious. But as I purchased more and more stuff I came to love the awesome solo's Dean comes up with in songs such as "Meatplow", "Silvergun Superman", and "Unglued" for Purple as well as "Pop's Love Suicide", "Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart" and Seven Caged Tigers off of Tiny Music.....Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop. The first album was much more power chord-palooza which while creating some great songs denied Dean some solos that I'm sure could have been awesome. As for my favorite album? Probably Tiny Music.

I think Scott is much more at home in STP. He made a lot of good songs in VR but STP is his bread and butter. He is so much more in sync with STP that it'd be hard to debate that he is a better fit with VR.

My favorite STP songs? As well as their hits I love "Crackerman", "Silvergun Superman", "Tumble in the Rough", "Seven Caged Tigers", "Glide", "Atlanta" and "I Got You" as well as a slew of others.

Somewhat. I own alot of their earlier discography, such as Core, Purple, and Tiny Music. Core is a disc I can listen to over and over to this day without skipping a track, because that's how damn good it is. I think Weiland is an amazing entertainer and a thrill to see live. He really is a one of a kind entertainer.

Do you prefer their earlier material or they more experimental/varied later offerings?

Earlier material, for sure. I personally thought that Shangra-Di Dee La was a piece of crap album, and I sold it back about a week after I bought it. No. 4 wasn't much better. As I said above, Core is one of those few albums I can listen to over and over and not get sick of. I thought they certainly got away from their roots in alot of ways in their last two albums before breaking up, which changed the essence of what made them so great.

Do you think Scott should have sorted out his differences with Velvet Revolver and remained in the band?

I don't know, man, this is a tough one. I freaking loved the first VR disc, and saw them live after it came out when they came through Pittsburgh. Awesome show in every way. There was a sense of hedonism and maturity that was displayed at the same time by the group, although it seemed at times there was a disconnect between Weiland and the rest of the band. This was evident both live and on Contraband. I don't think these guys were beneficial to one another, as they all relapsed back into drug abuse at the time.

The awesomeness of this track is even better live, and was honestly best when VR played it live. Simply a great surprise when they played it, and phenomenal.

The first STP track I ever heard, and still my favorite. I was in 5th grade or something when this came out, and still one of my favorites to this day.

Just an awesome band in every way. I love it when a band can play slow, and go full throttle based on the song. This is the best example of the former, IMO. Just an awesome band, especially their early stuff.

I definitely am a fan of Stone Temple Pilots. Here around the Kansas City area, there used to be a karaoke type talent show, and the most popular song was "Big Empty." I so love everything about STP, only wish Weiland could get his act together. I also dug it when he branched out and did Velvet Revolver with some of GNR people as well, and even got those cd's too. I really liked "Vasoline" "Big Empty." and "Sour Girl." I mean really, you name it, I love it. I'm not that picky when it comes to music, I was really amped when I first heard them on the movie "The Crow" one of the films in the series, I can't remember which of the millions it was. LOL. But, great band, tormented lead singer, but isn't that how the greats usually are?

I meant to comment on this album in my post but I forgot to. I liked this album a lot more after multiple listens. It's not like I'm saying it's a great album or anything but I think it's definitely underrated.

Hollywood Bitch is a great riff oriented song. Although they greatly diversified during their later albums, songs like this still would have fit perfectly on Tiny Music.

A nice acoustic piece that would have been a nice album ender but it got stuck right in the middle of the album where softer songs always get lost.

I guess this songs about Courtney Love. The lyrics definitely do nothing to dissuade you from reaching that conclusion.

Maybe my favorite track from the album for Dean's solo alone. If you can't stand the track skip to his solo at 3:15. Dean's such an underrated guitarist.

Okay, two more. Rare songs you may have not heard. Not from the album but I thought you guys would like this being fans of the band. Originally planned for "The Crow" movie they replaced "Only Dying" with "Big Empty" after Brandon Lee died thinking the song would be in bad taste.

And this one called "Fast As I Can" was recorded when they were still going by Mighty Joe Young. They were way funkier then and it shows in this song.

Are you a fan? Are you not?

I wouldn't say I am a huge fan I certainly like them and I think they have some great songs but if they came here for a concert I wouldn't go out of my way to see them or anything. So yeah I'm a fan, just not a huge one.

Do you prefer their earlier material or they more experimental/varied later offerings?

Earlier without a doubt, I am a fan of heavier music in general so STP's earlier stuff suits me better. The only STP albums I own are Purple and Core, I haven't bothered buying any of the others because they don't really sound that good to me. With that being said I reckon their recent single "Between The Lines" is alright, nothing amazing or anything but it's decent.

Do you think Scott should have sorted out his differences with Velvet Revolver and remained in the band?

Tough one, the first album was great probably one of the better hard rock offerings of the decade but the second album was pretty weak, Scott obviously wanted to go a bit softer and that didn't suit the style of the other guys. In the end if they can't agree on what type of music to make then it is probably the right idea to break up or your gonna end up releasing crap.

What are your favourite STP tracks?

Sex Type Thing, I love that song great rocking riff and Scott proves what a great singer he really is. Better live in my opinion as Scott is such a great front man and he is always entertaining. Other that that though I don't really have any, as I said I'm not a huge fan of them

What are your favourite STP tracks?

I am definitely a fan of STP. They came out when I was just really getting into music and have left a great impression on me. They are a measuring stick that I compare other bands to.

I guess I prefer their early material. Purple was my favorite album.

I wasn't a fan of Velvet Revolver. I just couldn't get into them. I would much rather have Scott in STP, or trying to work out his problems with STP than in Velvet Revolver.

My favorite STP tracks:

1. Lady Picture Show and Pretty Penny
2. Big Bang Baby
3. Plush
4. Wicked garden
5. Creep
6. Vasoline
7. Interstate Love Song
8. Big Empty

How the fuck did I miss the fact that this thread has existing for almost a week and I hadn't noticed it?!?

STP is, pretty much, my favorite all-time band. I grew up listening to the sounds of grunge in the 90's and Stone Temple Pilots always grabbed my attention with their simple, yet effective, song format. They were the fifth "big" band that was introduced to the world post 80's hair/glam metal outside of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.

For anyone to call them a "Pearl Jam ripoff" was a travesty. I never heard any similarities between "Core" and any of Pearl Jam's albums. However, when "Vs" was released, I heard many similar songs to ones on the Core album such as Plush (STP) vs. Dissident (PJ). So to me, Pearl Jam ripped a lot off of STP.

Regardless of critics bashing and his personal battles with drugs, Scott Weiland is one of the greatest frontmen to ever grace a live stage. His ability to stay visually unique and deliver powerful vocals and energy is something that is very lacking in our present day of music.

Do you prefer their earlier material or they more experimental/varied later offerings?

I think, just like mostly everyone else, I prefer their earlier offerings of music. However, they have a few gems that they created after Core and Purple were released. Their album, Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop gave us a few more earworms over the years such as "Lady Picture Show", "Big Bang Baby" and arguably one of my favorite STP songs, "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart". But beyond this album, they really didn't release anything that caught on with me besides "Down."

Do you think Scott should have sorted out his differences with Velvet Revolver and remained in the band?

I think Scott's run with VR was successful enough as it was. Whether he got back into the band or not is basically irrelevant to me. They proved they were a formidable super group at the time and made some great music.

What are your favorite STP tracks?

I can't even begin to list these. It would probably take up more space than you could possibly anticipate.

Ironically I haven't listened to that much STP (only heard Big Empty and that is very good) but I am a fan of Scott Weiland, I've listened to him in Velvet Revolver and he's amazing in it, top that with STP doing grunge style of music I should probably check them out.
