Sting- The Greatest Wrestler Never to Work for Vince McMahon

Going on 10 years with WrestleZone
Sting said:
"There was always something in me that thought that Vince McMahon wanted me more to undermine WCW than he wanted me as a talent. I just always believed that. I saw a lot of guys from WCW that went to WWE and that happened. Anyone who made it to a higher level within WCW and then tried to jump over - it just didn’t work. The other thing was that WCW ended up giving me what I wanted in my contract."

2 NWA World Heavyweight Championships.
6 WCW World Heavyweight Championships.
2 TNA World Heavyweight Championships.
2 WCW United States Heavyweight Championships.
3 WCW World Tag Team Championships. (all 3 with different partners)
Appeared on Thunder in Paradise as a villain.

I mean, just LOOK at that resume of accomplishments. Aside from the purely quantifiable, Sting is often on the lips of most wrestling fans when they are asked who their all-time top 20 is, and makes many top 10 and even a few top 5 lists.

Sting has taken Ric Flair to 45+ minutes on several occassions. He has participated in one of the greatest feuds (and feud build-ups) of all time with Hollywood Hogan. He's the only person I know of who has managed to not look like a total jackass when ripping off "The Crow." He may be one of the greatest wrestlers / sports entertainers / whatever we are supposed to call them this month's - EVER!

And he never worked for Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

And to be honest, why would he? Why become a cog in the wheel of the machine when you can go out and blaze your own trail on foot?

I defy anyone to come up with a greater professional wrestler in history who has never worked for Vince McMahon.

Good luck, because you're not going to find it. There is no one on the horizon, I dare, dare someone to say AJ Styles or Samoa Joe. There is no one with in the memorable past that people can say. The fact is, Sting is the ultimate wrestler to never lace his boots for Mr. McMahon. Even the Undertaker, with as great as he has become and the franchise of the company, was a WCW prospect.

Stings resume speaks for itself. Sting is just as big of a name in the business as guys like the Warrior and Savage. The great thing about this situation, Vince McMahon would kill to have a 50 year old Sting work just one match for him, while Sting absolutely wants nothing at all to do with Vince McMahon and the WWE. How amazing is that. He's never worked for the man, has been offered, which almost anyone would jump at the chance. Sting is in a situation now that he can turn down Mr. McMahons call. That's the most powerful statement you can make.

with no disrespect to sting whatsoever, as i'm a big sting mark since uwf, i'd like to present another candidate for this particular title

the great muta

he's been:
wcw world tag champ
nwa world champ
iwgp tag champ 4 times
iwgp heavyweight champ 4 times
ajwp unified ctag champ 3 times with 3 different partners
ajwp triple crown heavyweight champ 3 times

his resume aside, kenji muto changed wrestling in this country forever with his flying and technical styles.
plus, i'm not sure, but i think he's the guy who started the whole "spitting weird stuff in his face" gimmick.

he's a legend. for my money, a better wrestler than sting.

that being said, i'm not even saying that sting isn't the greatest wrestler never to work for vince, just that muta deserves consideration

Of course this is all opinion, and sting may be the best, but to just anoint him or say there is no one close is incorrect.

Magnum TA- true he does not have the titles or the career length, but i would argue that in his prime he was a better wrestler and more popular the sting. If not for the car wresk he may well have gone on to be a great world champ.

Nick Bockwinkle- while by the time vince came to own the wwf bockwinkle was getting a little old he was still agreat wrestler. he is a multi time awa world champ, a multi time awa tag champ and his one hour draw with henning over the title is one of the greatest matches ever.

kevin von erich- rivals sting in popularity even though he spent the majority of career wresting in texas. does not have the titles to compete, but i belief kevin was the more skilled wrestler. If he only left texas.

bruiser brody- monster talent who wrestled everywhere except the wwf, and was a big star everywhere he went. considered a true legend of the ring. his fueds in matches in japan are great. died way too soon.

stan hansen- while stan wrestled for vince sr, he never competed for vince jr. like brody, hansen was a wrestler who was a star everywhere he went. while winning titles in america, including the awa world title, he was a huge, huge star in japan.

these are a few. i could name some more, especially wrestlers from japan, but these will do. are these guys better then sting? maybe not. but they over a strong arguement to the question.

Side note- the Great Kabuki was spitting the mist years before Muta.

Sting is definetely the biggest star never to work for Vince. Any other big name that you can thing of has in one way or another worked for Vince. Yes, there are really great japanese wrestlers and other international wrestlers that never worked for Vince, but Sting is an Icon. I love how Sting has no interest to go to WWE and love when guys like Goldberg, Hogan, Nash, and the rest of WCW went crawling back to Vince, Sting wouldn't. Sting is a star and owes none of it to Vince or the WWE. Sting has accomplished so much and he is the best wrestler(remember wrestler just doesn't mean mat skills, and doing flips)to never work for Vince.

There is no doubt this statement is true. Everyone else has gone there, and everyone else has gotten the big payday. Sting is in a class of his own. It must be great to tell Vince McMahon NO. Throughout all of his accomplishments Sting is undoubtedly the greatest performer to never work for McMahon. Everyone knows Vince would love to get his hands on Sting for only one match. It wont happen and it disappoints and overjoys me.

Sting is a class act, who is winding down his career. It looks like he will be able to go out on top and write the ending to his book he calls a career with a high note. The story he is involved with right now is excellent, and it will lead to him going out on a high note. A class act, and a superb entertainer. Funny that he never worked for McMahon, very cool.

No one else is in Sting's league. Goldberg would have been up there, but then he did his disasterous run and has barely been seen since. No one can question Sting;s integrity on the issue.
