Stephen King... one of the greatest novelists in American history. The amount of horror classics he has written over the past thirty years are uncountable. But, this is the Movies and Television Section, so the question is: What's your favorite movie(s) that was adapted from a Stephen King novel?

My first choice is a no-brainer for me, Stand By Me. Stephen King wrote an awesome novel by the name of The Body, and Rob Reiner brought it to the big screen and named it Stand By Me. This is a film I consider to be perfect. There are zero flaws in it as far as I'm concerned. A better cast could not have been selected. River Phoenix was tremendous as the troubled young man Chris Chambers. His 'drama' scenes were some of the best I've ever seen from a kid his age. Jerry O'Connell I thought was great as Vern, the hilarious chubby little sensitive guy who’s the scary one in the bunch. Then you have fucking Corey Feldman as Teddy, who was just insane, but you couldn't help but love his antics and also feel sorry for what he's gone through in life. But the best performance in the film was Kiefer Sutherland as Ace. You know, I don't think there's a better, more versatile heel in Hollywood then Kiefer Sutherland. I mean, the guy makes a fantastic 'bad guy' every time he plays one, and this film was definitely no exception. In this he was just a true asshole who you desperately wanted to see get shot at the end because he was so fucking despicable and hateful. So, with all those performances (Wil Wheaton was good as Gordie too, but it was the weakest performance in the film, in my opinion), it doesn't matter what the script wais, you were going to get a GREAT film, but it just so happened that these terrific actors did have a fantastic script to work with and they definitely made the best of it.

So yeah... that's #1 for me, as far as the topic concerned. Cat's Eye is a close second, though. That film is one of the most underrated movies of all time in my opinion. There are three short stories in it and all are beyond amazing.

Honorable mentions go out to The Green Mile, Firestarter, Pet Sematary, Misery, Apt Pupil and Secret Window.

Dude, I was just about to make this thread the other day. And, I will now discuss the film that would have inspired me to do so.

In terms of emotionally affecting the viewer, no other Stephen King adaptation comes close to either Stand By Me or The Shawshank Redemption. Both of these are excellent films, but, as far as the best adaptation of a King novel, I'm going with John Carpenter's Christine. More than likely, I am choosing this film for two reasons: one, I saw Christine for the first time just a year ago; and two, I have just become a John Carpenter fanatic (for his films of the 80s...his films in the 90s, not so much).

I've read elsewhere that Christine wasn't as faithful as other Stephen King adaptations, but I'm not really persuaded by this argument. I've only read a few Stephen King novels, but I am well aware that a big theme in his horror novels is the physical transformation of those that are possessed by an evil force. And, no one hit upon this theme better than Carpenter's Christine; I was blown away by Arnold Cunningham's (played by Keith Gordon) transformation after he purchased Christine, a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury. Furthermore, Carpenter's haunting score and the extremely tense killing scenes only added to my sense of awe.

So, I'll go with Christine, even if my choice is a little bit biased. Close seconds would definitely be Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption.
