Smackdown thoughts - 29 September

Mr. Artistic guy

Better Off This Way
I have no issue with Kane and Bryan running Smackdown. The prospective partnership born in their opposition in Sandow and Rhodes is interesting for me, with the roll Sandow was one and the fact that both Rhodes and he were able to dispatch with Kane and Bryan, both upper card superstars, I expect the team to be a highly booked one who will possibly gun to the titles and be successful.

I am as comatose on the impact of The Big Show as the average person, he' not bad but he's not that good, but I was impressed with how they re-introduced him to the show after. He's always been a good talker, a decent wrestler but just not that interesting. It works for him to go after the world heavyweight title as opposed to the WWE one because of the lack of success he had in that venture, and he does seem like a legitimate person who could stop Sheamus' lengthy tite reign.

Orton is a shadow of the guy who patrolled the company a couple of years ago. He went from an interesting tweener who could destroy heel or face alike and had a nasty temper, and he's slowly transitionned to a face who has a strong moral code, helping the good and beating the bad. He's still very capable in the ring, adequate on the mic, but he doesn't feel like one of the top three guys on the show as he did for several years in the past.

Del Rio, just please please please take on a mid-card feud. Get rid of the cars and the announcer because you are billing this man higher than you ought. Thank you Orton. WWE really needs some new blood who are eligible to content for the world heavyweight belt. For years it seems we've had Orton, Sheamus, Big Show all on the list and nobody else seems to be on the horizon. Once the Sheamus and Show feud, and a possible Orton and Sheamus feud are fulfilled, I see nothing new you can do in the division.

cesaro got great insta-heat when he dropped Aksana. She was decent eye-candy but couldn't really talk and would do nothing for Cesaro in the long-run. I propose to WWE that you should have Marella in one single backstage segment per week, his popularity would sky rocket once more. Santino is the best comedy guy in the company, why not use that to your advantage to get the guy some momentum each week, especially if this is the guy going for a US title. Cesaro is legit in the ring, him holding the US title does not look out of place despite the lack of time he's spent on WWE television. Decent short match, puts more momentum on Cesaro, bigger impact for his next challenger, good stuff.

The Divas situation would seem at an obvious route to be Eve in a wig, or someone working for Eve, but it could be an interesting way to throw a spanner in the works by introducing a new Diva to the division. The only way in which you can tell that Beth Phoenix is a face, is because she shouted 'Come on Buffalo'. It seems to be the case that she is very much tied into this story now. That was a Divas match on a mian show, not a PPV, that lasted longer than 3 minutes... But if you are going to have two women attain that honour, Beth and Natalya would be high on the list. I would love if this news of Beth leaving WWE were formed purely from this story about her indefinate suspension. Trying to get heat between Teddy Long and Booker T is going to be difficult.

They very deliberately replayed the ryback/Punk encounter, makes the mind wander. Where are they going with this?

Ryder back on smackdown in his accostomed sporadic fashion. It's clear that Vince gave Ryder that small stalling push just to satisfy the rallying marks, but he's now jobbing to guys on the main show and is once again a superstars regular. Barrett on the other hand, his slight re-invention was useful, better style in the ring and a much more appropriate finisher. He LOOKS like he'll be a world champion in the future, many say he's boring but he is very authoratative on the microphone and very comfortable, he carrys himself like someone who is going to be a champion and is better with some adjustments than a couple of guys already competing at the top level.

Miz can pull off a talk show, I just hope he can hold it for a while and not just have it once every couple of months like Edge's show or Christian's. Miz also looks like he's matured physically and he looks better in the ring to me when he competes, all useful things when Miz comes to the point for re-building to world champion level. Having Sheamus being the interviewer on the Miz's show with the role reversal, worked for both guys, it was a good idea. Miz is very annoying, I just don;t know if it's his character or not. The whole segment was good, both Sheamus and Miz dropped some of their better work.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to buy Ziggler unless he can speak for himself. Oh, he did. Cool. After Ziggler ha finished it became obvious what was going to happen, typical Sheamus booking, beating two guys at once. He's the world champion, he's got the justification.

We're at the point where we can have an 8-team torunament for the number one contendership of the tag team titles. How the hell did that happen? We had about three teams at the start of the year. If there has been any evidence that the tag team division has increased in priority, this is the clearest indicator yet.

I am very happy that the King made it through, but I just don't want to see him back on commentary. He'd gotten to the point before leaving of complacency. There are better options to fill that position, consider your health King and leave the position to somebody else.

Poor Usos, they've been supporting the tag team division for a good long while now and it's obvious that they won't pass even the first stage of this torunament. A quick vistory for Rhode and Sandow, not giving much away on free TV I guess. I don;t think there's been a single match over five minutes but I guess we'll be rewarded with one at the end of the show... if you happen to like Big Show and/or Randy Orton.

As per usual, they've done a good job of squandering half the show to Raw replays, don't try this at home's (you simply don't need three of these per show), advertising Smckdown world tours (about five times - why not focus more on the Smackdown you are currently in the progress of doing) and other related things. Ironically, Raw could use more of these time-wasting opportunities to break up their three hour parade but Smackdown gets the majority of them on a two hour show /rant.

I made a booking predication about Ryback facing Tensai on Raw, I guess my idea was so goo that they brought it forward a show. Should be another fairly short match, we're entering the final 20 minutes and we have a Smackdown main event that usually takes in excess of 10 minutes. I'm not as harsh on tensai as most people, he's good in the ring and ignores the stupid chants, I think he's good mid-card fodder, maybe even a champion. It's the battle of the mistaken identities because if you listened to the audience, you would think we were watching Goldberg against Albert. Wrestling fans - oy. I even called the finish me, hire me WWE.

UPDATE: Match WAS short. Quelle suprise.

Many people have been talking about about Cena his future with regards to him being the top guy in the company, and the name Ryback has arisen in many places. I would think it needless to say, but Ryback will have to develop so much more depth before ever being able to claim the same acolade Cena has. I'm not a big Cena fan, but he's has layers and is someone people can invest in. People will not invest in ryback for very long if they can't see any depth beneath beating people quickly.

OH DEL RIO JUST GOOO AWAY!!

Is it just me or does Orton always sell injuries to the arm, I've never seen him with a bad back or head or even a gammy leg. I guess we're getting Del Rio and Orton then, as long as Del Rio can stay away from the title scene I don't care. Yes, Show won as many were aware of. Show is going to HIAC with a head of steam, it should be a fairly interesting match for the world title. Show could beat Sheamus from a spectator viewpoint... but he won't. I don't know who Sheamus loses the title to, but it won't be Show. Has anybody else noticed the long reigns that are running wild these days, Austin Aries - longest X division title reign, Bobby Roode- longest TNA champ reign, CM Punk - 300+ days, Sheamus - a good 6 months now and it doesn't seem like stopping soon.
