CANYON, Texas -- Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County grand jury on drug and burglary charges.
The indictment was handed up Wednesday in Canyon. It charged the 33-year-old former San Diego Chargers quarterback and former West Texas A&M football and golf coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and delivery of a simulated controlled substance.
Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into a Canyon apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing the painkiller Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.
James Farren, Randall County criminal district attorney, said Leaf has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia, the Amarillo Globe-News reported. Farren told the newspaper that efforts were under way to try to convince Leaf to return to the United States on his own.
It was not clear whether Leaf had an attorney.
If convicted, the burglary charge carries a sentence of two to 20 years. The other counts could carry up to a two-year sentence in a state jail each, according to court records.
The Chargers chose Leaf out of Washington State with the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. He played in the NFL from 1998 to 2001.
The Colts choosing Peyton Manning has never looked better. Ryan Leaf is one of the biggest draft busts ever. A system quarterback with a weak mind is never a good choice. His inability to not suck has doomed every Texas Tech quarterback.
Ryan Leaf has fallen so far. He had millions of dollars before he ever took an NFL snap. All he had to do was fade away quickly and open a car dealership and he would have led a very comfortable life. Instead, he has had drug problems and controversy everywhere he has gone.
I want to feel sorry for him, but it wasn't even circumstance that led him to break in, it was his own bad decision, just like everything else bad that has happened to him.
