Rumored: Sony "Smash Bros." Style Fighting Game In Development

Okay, it's only a rumor right now, and Sony has refused to comment, but there may just be a Smash-style game featuring Sony characters in the works. While this may be looked at as a rip-off by Sony, if the game turns out to be at least good, then I wouldn't complain. I've thought of the potential for a game like this before, though only to contemplate who I think should be in it. With the likes of Kratos, Nathan Drake, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sweet Tooth, and a bunch of others, I'm certain Sony has enough guys to throw into a project like this. It all depends on the developer though. Superbot Entertainment is making the game, and from looking into them (their official website), they apparently haven't released any games yet. I don't know who's on the team or what their qualifications may be, but if Sony is trusting them with something like this, I expect that they're at least decent. I'll try not to speculate too much on this game until it's officially announced, but I do see the potential for a fun new franchise.

It'll be interesting to say the least. However, Sony will have to really make this game the best it possibly can be if they want to even compete with Super Smash Bros. I mean, the Super Smash series has a plethora of characters in it, ranging from Mario to Sonic to Olimar. Only having like 20 characters in the game isn't very appealing to me. While I credit Sony for trying to cash in on a very popular series and it's gameplay, I think I'd rather stick to Super Smash Bros -- unless Sony can change my mind.

I think Sony's quest for realism is going to be their downfall if this ends up happening. They do have characters like Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Crash, and Sly... but I don't necessarily see them playing nice with characters like Ico, Laura Croft, and Snake. I guess the same can be said for Smash Bros, mixing together Mario, Peach, Zelda, Link, and Marth. But I really don't think Sony is going to take the cartoony approach that needs to happen to make this work. Maybe I'm wrong...

At the very least it'll be interesting to see them pull it off. As much as I love the Smash Bros. series I always thought they were a marketing ploy to sell their systems. Sony on the other hand has enough games selling their system that they don't need to make this game. Nintendo has to continue the series to promote their next-gen console. Sony does not.

Worldwide sales figures as of October 1st
Wii- 89 million
PS3- 56 million
I think sony could do with the sales more then nintendo. I don't think 33 milliom people bought the wii because of Smash Bros.

On the topic i think it's good business by Sony. Nintendo have made millions through spin offs of their most popular characters(although most of them involve a certain Italian plummer) and im suprised it's taken this long for Sony to follow suit. There's certainly enough characters for them to choose from Kratos, Sackboy, Ratchet and clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly cooper even James Bond has been rumoured due to Sony owning MGM.

I don't think realisim will be an issue either. If Nintendo can make it work with Snake and Link then Sony should be able to fit Kratos and Nathan Drake into their game. As long as Sony follow Nintendo's proven formula of making it more "fun" then serious then they have themselves a winner.

I would play it. I think that this sounds like a great game. The original idea for Smash Bros went from a novelty concept to an incredibly popular mega-series. Why shouldn't Sony try something similar? I would enjoy Smash Bros style gameplay as guys like Kratos, Spyro, and even Crash Bandicoot. I just hope they do something unique with it because otherwise it would just be a ripoff.

Oh Hell Yea!

I'd play it too, but only if they look at ALL Playstation Games. I won't stand for just the recent characters.

I'm talking putting Nathan Drake, Kratos, Lara Croft, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, etc.

And putting them with Old school characters like Spyro, Crash, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Rayman, Sly Cooper, I'd even go so far as saying, throw in, Parappa The Rappa, Aya Brea, or even EVE herself!

If Sony is real doing this and want to surpass Super Smash Bros., they need to do it big or don't do it at all.

The possibilities are endless.

I don't understand where people are coming from when they hint that this being a ripoff of Super Smash Bros. Nintendo didn't invent the idea of a crossover fighter. Companies like SEGA and Capcom had crossover fighter games before Nintendo joined the party (SEGA Fighters Megamix and X-Men vs Street Fighter, respectively).

To claim that Sony is ripping this idea off of Nintendo is crazy talk. At the very least, let's not pretend that Nintendo is the innovator here.

I'm fairly inept when it comes to fighting games, with the last game from that genre that I really invested a lot of time into being Super Street Fighter II, but even I am excited by the idea of a fighting game featuring Sony exclusive characters. I'd like to see potential match-ups in Sweet Tooth vs. Kratos. Nathan Drake vs. Solid Snake. Ratchet & Clank vs Jax & Daxter. Sackboy vs PaRappa the Rapper.

Sony has more than enough characters end games to make this a successful roster, but the secret to success for Sony will be to make this game over-the-top and fun. If Sony chooses to take themselves too seriously, I can't see this game being a huge success outside of the already die hard Sony fans.

A crossover fighter that features Sony's exclusive characters, could potentially draw enough interest to convince those who have yet purchased a PlayStation to do so. It also could spark interest in those who have only experienced a handful of Sony exclusive titles, to venture out and try other titles that they had no interest in previously.

This "Title Fight" game has tons of potential if handled correctly, but at this time it is way to early to form a solid opinion with only the information that has been brought forward. Time will tell.
