The Avengers is sitting comfortably at No. 3 overall on both the domestic and International ticket sale charts but it seems both Marvel and Disney desire the No. 1 overall spot and a current rumor says they could be contemplating releasing The Avengers: Director's Cut in theaters at the end of this summer.

This theory was originally seen in a ComicBook.com post so we sent a few emails and a Hollywood source responded. The insider has heard this rumor as well and told SuperHero Authority this is a possibility but nothing has been confirmed to actually happen. Marvel and Disney have not said anything regarding this new rumor as well.

You might be thinking this is a ridiculous move but when you consider the fact there could be over 35 minutes of new and unseen footage in the director's cut, you might actually consider seeing it again in the theater. Before the current theatrical version was released, director Joss Whedon's previous edit of the film was at just about, or just over, three hours in length.

This journalist thinks that amount of additional time is more than enough to make the re-investment worthwhile.

In the end, this move could legitimately push The Avengers to the top of both the domestic and International charts and the world's largest entertainment company will own the top grossing movie ever.

Interesting news.

And here's a quick look at the all-time list:

The entire list is right here: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/

Re-releasing highly successful blockbusters isn't something new. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Avatar, Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, and Titanic have all been down this road before, so Disney and Marvel will follow a reoccurring trend, if they decide to pull the trigger on a theatrical re-release

The Avengers surpassing Titanic and Avatar for the #1 spot on the all-time box office grosses list could become a realistic possibility. We all knew The Avengers would dominate the box office standings for a good while. One month has passed, and The Avengers is still in the top five rankings, and The Avengers will stay in the top ten for quite some time.

Fans will surely buy a director's cut version of The Avengers on DVD or Blu-Ray, and for them, the extra cash won't be a problem. A theatrical re-release should work, because watching The Avengers on the big screen provides more of an extravagant experience. Fans shouldn't mind a more lengthy film, and the promise of new footage will lure them to theaters.

The Amazing Spider-Man will make some noise upon its release, but this film shouldn't crush any major all-time box office records. As far as box office profits go, the original trilogy did set the bar pretty high, and The Amazing-Spider Man isn't the #1 choice for the most anticipated summer blockbuster of 2012. Oh, and you can't forget about this:

The Dark Knight Rises is more than capable of holding on to the #1 spot for a long time, and this film could shatter a handful of box office records.

When it comes to the #1 spot on the all-time list, The Dark Knight Rises will provide some very tough competition for The Avengers, and the gamble of a re-release could become a failed experiment.

Still, The Avengers does have a legit shot at supremacy, and the re-release could provide an incredible boost. The Avengers could achieve iconic status amongst superhero films over the next ten years, and as time passes, The Avengers might be remembered as one of the all-time classics from any genre.

Thoughts on this?

The most logical thing to do is to wait until the Blu-Ray/DVD release of The Avengers and once sales have died down then give the "Director's Cut" a limited cinema release. After, say, a month have another DVD/Blu-Ray release. Seems like the best way to maximise overall profit. It'll never be the highest grossing film of all time so Disney(?) are better off just trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of loyal fans.

Personally another 35 minutes of talking in an Avengers move seems skippable.
