ROH isn't going to surpass TNA as number two; TNA is going to burn themselves out down to number three.
ROH isn't doing anything different than they have been- it's just that we're entering a phase in professional wrestling where a promotion that films primarily in high school gymnasiums and occasionally the Hammerstein can look pretty damned good, because people are looking for a product that isn't the WWE. (Just like when WCW and ECW collapsed- several promotions were birthed from their debris. Many didn't survive, a few did.) For a while that was TNA, but in order to garner a larger television audience, TNA gradually became more and more like the WWE.
ROH could probably go on Spike tomorrow and be pulling in the same ratings within three months, but that's not necessarily a wise decision or indicative of ROH's current position. There's a market for both fans that don't like the WWE, and fans that like the WWE but want more wrestling content on TV than the WWE provides. In my ever so humble opinion, ROH is going to be better served by continuing to provide the product that they've been providing, and letting the audience come to them. TNA's incipient collapse (sorry, TNA fans) is going to be a Good Thing for the industry. There's room for a #2 promotion in professional wrestling, and TNA being gone will send people looking for alternatives that they haven't explored yet. ROH is already benefiting from this, and the danger they face over the next couple of years is to change their product to appeal to a larger audience, thus alienating the audience they've built up. (HI, TNA! Looking right at you.)
ROH is like the girl you knew from high school that you run into at the ten-year reunion. She wasn't the Most Beautiful In Class, but had her own thing going and her own circles. The ten-year reunion hits, Ms. Most Beautiful has needle marks running up her arms and is giving blow jobs in the coatroom to her high school ex-boyfriends, and Ms. ROH, who looks a lot the same as she used to, looks a bit better now that she's more mature.
