Rey Mysterio Hurt- Should he retire?

PWInsider.com is reporting that both Rey Mysterio has been suffering from nagging knee injuries which will require surgeries.

This is the reason why WWE decided to have Batista beat up Mysterio so badly after their bout at Survivor Series last night.

Thoughts? I think he should just retire I mean he just came back from a suspension and he always gets injured at this time , depending on how long his injury takes to heal he may miss out on yet another WrestleMania. I don't want him to retire but he gets injured so often there is not much you can do with him. When he returns what is in store for him ?

This may not be true. I don't believe that they would start this big feud if they are only going to have one match.BUT in the case that he is actually hurt this is bad for Smackdown.Rey Rey a key part in Smackdown he can play the maineventer or the Midcarder and be great doing either. If he does decide to get the knee opperated on i could see him coming back around wrestlemania a knee injury does not take that long to recover from.

Yeah... Mysterio's knees fit into the same catagory as 'Taker's hips, Kane's knees, Kurt Angle's neck, Matt Hardy's back, and Jeff Hardy's drug problems; i.e. stuff we already knew about when it was reported. Rey's knees have been buggered for years. So Batista's doing what Chavo did when they were feuding and Rey needed time off (only powerbombing him to oblivion, rather than whaking his knees with a chair). The knee problems are a consiquence of his style and age. If he's taking time off, oh well Smackdown will survive, and batist's going to be a heel when he gets back.

If the WWE wants to make Batista a super heel, Rey should retire so that Batista can claim to have ended his career. Besides, what does Rey have left to do?

Rey was really the perfect fit for Batista right now. Now that Rey is injured, what do they do with Batista? Throw him into the title picture? That's what I see happening, because he really isn't in a situation to put over younger talent at this point.

With Show gone, I think this really hurts WWE. What does this do to the tag titles? Does Jericho find yet another partner? Or does he vacate the titles? If so, who gets the belts, and will they continue to try to grow the tag division? Does Jericho stay in the title picture with Taker? Or does he start a feud with someone else?

Lots of questions and hopefully answers will be provided this week on Smackdown.

Rey is very injury prone, but as far as still being a draw, mainly for the kids, I still think he's got something left. His best buddy Batista gets injured all the time and still is able to come back, and gets pushed. Why? Because fans still want to see him. The same goes for Rey.

He'll be back, and probably get an insane pop when he returns. The fans will love this guy, even if he's used on a limited basis.

I think he should. It'd be a bit of a hit for the WWE, but he has to think of his health and well-being in the future. He may not be able to walk when he hits his mid-40s/50s. He's had surgery on his knees like 6 times hasn't he? At the least take a long and extended break, and not return as soon as the doctor clears him. The WWE could manage without Rey for a year or so.

I dont think that anybody wants rey to retire just yet. Hell I'm not even a fan of his and i dont want him to retire. the question is, is which surgury he should have. the more invasive procedure will probably keep him in the ring for longer until his next surgury/retirement (whichever's sooner), but he's on the shelf for longer compared to the less invaseive procedure. Personally I think he should take the big one, because sooner or later it's going to need to be done; and it's probably better for it to be done now, rather than putting it off until the last minute.

As much as I would love Rey to go on for a few more years, if these nagging injuries are taking there toll on his body, maybe its time to step away. He has given so much to the business and has earnt almost everybodys respect, I for one would hate to see Rey being pushed around in a wheelchair in 5 years time barely able to move.

We could be looking into this far too much as it may just be a basic op for a minor injury, but if it's another serious injury maybe he should retire and spend some time with his family, lets face it he's already given us more than enough, why risk it?

Yeah, I think it really is time for Rey to hang up his boots. It's a sad thing to say and possibly to witness, as he has consistently been one of the best cruisers in the business...ever.

He has nothing to lose. His best years are way behind him in WCW. What has he really accomplished in WWE anyway? Besides a deserving, yet lackluster World title run (because of bad booking, no knock on Rey), I can't really think of anything else that really jumps out at me.

I've simply gotten used to the instance of Rey returning, wrestling for a few short months, and then leaving again because of nagging injuries. If he comes back from this one, hopefully he can stick around for a little longer. If not, I think it's time to put away the mask.

The real answer is no. Why? Because this year he proved he can work and perform at a high level even if he has to slow down his offense. I believe Rey was WWE's most consistent performer this year and he can still help by putting guys over. He is a very credible wrestler because he has won like every gold imaginable in the WWE. Anywhere from Tag team to Heavyweight gold.

So having Rey retire would be stupid, he can still perform at a high level and he can usually give at least six months of solid wrestling before his knee gives or another aching part of his body. He is also a big money maker so Vince and the E would try anything to capitalize on his popularity. So no, Rey shouldn't retire, he is too popular and can still give to the fans, especially after watching him perform in 2009.

No!! Rey mysterio has worked so hard for his entire career!! His charisma helps get the fans ready for the match, but when it gets heavily hyped, (This occurs alot since he is usually the underdog)I love to see his matches against big ppl, but maybe he can take a break. Not ready for him to retire. Maybe he should take a break, and come back b4 wrestlemania, in order to feud with batista. (Batista could be champ since he is gonna feud with undertaker). If batista is champ, him and rey for the title is great!! Just IMO...

Well, he's shown that he can still put on great matches this year. The No Way Out elimination chamber and the series with Jericho were awesome. The series with Ziggler was pretty good, too. I think as long as he can put on matches of those qualities he shouldn't go, cause then he's still making crowds happy.

But if this (6th?) knee surgery slows him down and makes him worse, then he should retire. I know he's not as fast as he was 10 years ago, but he's still fast and good in the ring. But if the next knee surgery makes him slower and he just becomes pathetic, like we've seen so many wrestlers become in their old age, then he should definitely retire. It's been said that he's financially set, and he's helped put younger guys over so he's given back to the industry enough.

So, like I said, it all comes down to how good he is once he returns from the knee surgery.

I'm not a Rey Mysterio fan, but I really don't think he should retire. He does make Smackdown a good show to watch, and he's pretty much the ONLY face high enough on the card right now. They're nobody else, except Kane who is acting as a tweener, but still... If Rey retired Smackdown would be hurt. If he were to retire, they should at least wait for somebody else to rise up on Smackdown(Morrison, Hardy), or wait for Edge to return.

Absolutely not.

Rey Mysterio may be injury prone, but he is a great in-ring worker, brings new Latino fans to the WWE product, and sells a shitload of merchandise for the company. Batista is more injury prone than Rey, and he's well...below average. But he's getting better as a heel. Anyways, Rey should not retire. Maybe put him on a schedule similar to Undertaker. Rey Rey deserves to wrestle as long as he wants. Rey always gets injuries in his knees and this is likely nothing big. He should be back by WrestleMania or Backlash.

If I was Johnny Ace and Vince, I would seriously have to sit down and weigh out the Cost/Benefit Analysis of keeping Rey on the WWE payroll. What I would need to do is look at Merchandise "profit" (Sales minus expenditures) from Rey Mysterio merchandise ... along with potential sales he may bring in for PPV buys and ticket sales.

You have to figure that this happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR with Rey Mysterio. He is always sitting out injured. And for that reason, he becomes a liability, very similar to Kevin Nash. What good is it to pay him millions of dollars (considering his merchandise profits added into his downside guaranteed salary) to sit at home for 75% of the year?

I would definitely lean towards getting rid of him, but again I can not do this until I actually look at the Cost/Benefit Ratio of keeping him on the payroll. If he still brings a profit to the company exclusively through his merchandise sales, despite sitting at home for nearly 75% of the year ... perhaps he should be kept on the payroll but low-balled with his downside guarantee, which I have no idea what that is right now.

the same could be said of The Undertaker Sid (do you mind if I call you that?), but the WWE still keeps him around (and he's older and more injury prone). I feel that this is be4cause even when they both spend most of the year off, WWE's still turning a profit on them.

I mean WWE's going to make an equal amount (if not more) money off of every bit Rey Mysterio merchandise sold, so from that respect they'll keep fewer to split the PPV profits with. Granted WWE may get fewer buys, but a bigger piece of a slightly smaller pie (I cannot believe that the absence of one superstar can significantly affect the number of buys (unless the absent superstar is on the level of the Rock, SCSA or Hulk Hogan), unless it causes an infinitely worse match to happen in its place (e.g. 'Taker vs Khali rather than 'Taker vs Jericho)) can still be better than the alternative. However my understanding of how the money made off of PPVs is divided may be wrong, so feel free to correct me (as we write on exam papers at my uni, I'm hungry for feedback).

With Mysterio wrestling at the house show a few days ago I don't think this injury is retiring worthy. Mysterio has a few more years in him and he is no way slowing down. This has been his year having a great Intercontinental reign with a 3 great matches with Jericho. Yes his moveset bases on his knees but with repair there is the chance it comes back stronger than ever. The only thing I could see slowing him down now is a broken leg.

Well i believe that rey needs to retire, because he botches a lot of what he does, band just get's injured. I loved the guy in WCW, he was amazing, and in his first year in wwe......but since then he just has done nothing apart from stupid matches where he has people threaten him about his mask, when u know he won't take it off.

If this is really taking a toll on "Mr. Royal Rumble", then yes, he should retire. If he continues, then he's running a superhigh risk of something really bad happening to him, rendering him to only being able to move around in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. A human life is worth more than money, and McMahon and the McMandroids need to take that into serious consideration.
